007シリーズ原作の魅力: 「ドクター・ノオ」② The attractiveness of the original series of 007 books: The fifth volume, 'Dr. No' (1958)

　小説の007シリーズにおいて「ドクター・ノオ」の前作にあたるのが、「ロシアから愛を込めて」です。小説としての完成度から言えば、「ドクター・ノオ」はこの前作に及ばないのかもしれません。しかし、娯楽作品としての面白さは決してひけを取りません。

　In the series of 007 novels, the previous one of 'Dr No' is 'From Russia with Love'. As for the quality as a novel, 'Dr No' may be inferior to the previous one. However, it is as entertaining as the 'From Russia with Love' definitely.

　先にのべたように、この物語の出だしは秀逸です。英国秘密情報部の支局が、わずかな時間で壊滅する展開の早さと緊張感は、真に映画化に値します。そして、事件を調査する中で、ジェームズ・ボンドが潜入するクラブ島で待ち受ける数々の出来事は、冒険小説に読者が求めるものの好例と言っていいものです。

　The beginning of this story, as I mentioned last time,  is so exciting. What is described there is one of MI6's Station is obliterated in short period of time and its fast plot development and sense of tension is definitely worth cinemizing. What Bond experiences while investigating the case in an island called Crab Key is a great example of what meets the readers' expectations to adventure novels.

　007シリーズにおいて、映画は全般に、原作の魅力を忠実に伝えきれていません。読者が心の中で描く映像以上のものを再現するのはおそらく不可能なのでしょう。ドクター・ノオでは、後の作品に比べると原作にかなり近づける努力は見られますが、やはり物足りなさが先に立ってしまいます。 

　As for the series of 007 movies, overall they failed to convey the attractiveness of the original story precisely. It may be impossible to recreate what readers imagine in their minds. In the film version of Dr No, they tried to make it close to the original story, but they couldn't enough. 

　ただし、ショーン・コネリーが演じるジェームズ・ボンドは、読者が心に描く007そのものです。それで十分です。映画で楽しむべきは、まさに歴代のジェームズ・ボンドの魅力なのでしょう。

　Even so the image of James Bond played by Sean Connery is exactly the same as that of in readers' mind. It is  perfectly satisfying for sure. What we enjoy in the film version is the attractiveness of successive James Bonds.

007シリーズ原作の魅力: 「ドクター・ノオ」The attractiveness of the original series of 007 books: The fifth volume, 'Dr. No' (1958)

Dr. No (James Bond #6) (Ian Fleming's James Bond) (English Edition)

　初版は1958年。イアン・フレミングによる007シリーズの小説としては第六作となります。しかし、1962年、記念すべき映画化第一作となったのが、この「ドクター・ノオ」でした。

　It was published in 1958. It was the sixth novel in the 007 series written by Ian Fleming. This novel titled Dr. No was the first one which was adapted into the movie in the series in 1962.

　物語の始まりは、夕暮れの英領ジャマイカ、キングストンの総督官邸に向かう閑静な通りです。官邸そばの社交クラブから出てきた男が、3人組の白杖を突く物乞いとすれ違った直後、彼らの銃弾に倒れます。男の遺体を車中に担ぎ込んだ３人は、男が向かおうとしていたログキャビンへと行き、秘書を殺害し、火を放つのでした。

　The first scene of the story is at the street which is quiet and leads to the governor's house in Kingston, Jamaica in the evening. A guy who comes out of the social interact venue near the governor's house passes three beggers with white sticks, and was immediately shot to death by them. The three guys take the body into their car and go to a

bungalow, where the guy was going to, to kill a woman who was the guy's secretary and set fire to the place.

　この出だしほど、鮮烈な印象を残す物語を他に知りません。フレミングのストーリーテリングの巧みさが最高に発揮されています。殺された男はストレングウェイズ、英国秘密情報部のカリブ支局長だったのです。

　I don't know any other stories which have such vividly impressive first few pages like this. You can see Fleming's extremely great skills as a storyteller there. The guy who was killed was John Strangways, the head of MI6's Station J in Kingston.

　ストレングウェイズの失踪事件を調査するために派遣されたのがジェームズ・ボンドでした。ストレングウェイズと旧知の間柄だったボンドは、単なる失踪事件として片付けられようとしていたこの事件の真相を究明しようと手がかりを集めます。やがて、ストレングウェイズが手掛けていたという調査案件に、ドクター・ノオという、ドイツ系中国人が関与していることが判明するのでした。

   James Bond was sent there to investigate the disappearance of Strangways. Bond had made friend with Strangways so he eagerly tried to get some clues for the case which was almost disposed as just a missing affair. Over time, it came to light that Strangways had been working on a investigation into some cases which seemed to have something to do with a half Chinese and half German guy called Dr. no.

ブックレビュー: 向田邦子ベストエッセイの感想② Book Reviews: My Impressions of Kuniko Mukouda's Best Essays②

　1929年生まれの向田邦子さんは、自分の父母とほぼ同世代です。戦時下の抑圧と困窮､戦後の混乱、高度成長と、まさに激動の時代を生きた世代です。エッセイのトピックには、今ではあり得ないような出来事が、数多く取り上げられています。

　Kuniko Mukouda, who was born in 1929, is in the same generation as my parents. They experienced the oppression and the hardship　during the war, the chaos after the war, and the rapid economic growth. Some of the topics in her essays are unbelievable now.

　「ごはん」というエッセイには、東京大空襲の様子が描かれています。冒頭、歩行者天国や飲み会での無礼講というものに対する居心地の悪さが述べられます。その感覚は、空襲の夜に、畳の上を土足で歩き回ったことに由来するものでした。

　In an essay titled 'Gohan (rice)' , she described what happened during an air raid in Tokyo. What is written at the beginning is the sense of awkwardness when she hears the words like vehicle-free, or unrestricted binge. She believes that the sense comes from the experience that she walked around on the tatami with her shoes on on the night of the air raid.

　疎開した妹から届く、字の無い葉書についてのエッセイも印象に残ります。本来なら涙を誘うようなお話も、向田邦子さんの湿り気の無い、カラッとした書きぶりではユーモラスに響くから不思議です。戦時下のエピソードは他にはあまり見当たりません。

　An essay that tells the story about the letters without any words from her evacuated little sister is quite impressive. Even though it's such a sad episode, she wrote it so casually that it even sounds humorous somehow. Except for these episodes, there aren't so many topics about wartime.

　「中野のライオン」という話は、昭和30年頃のことなのでしょうか。帰宅途中の電車から、アパートの窓辺に一匹のライオンが、男性とともに顔を覗かせているのを目撃したというものです。その後の「新宿のライオン」というエッセイで、その男性から連絡があり、事実だと確認できた経緯が述べられます。

　I wonder the essay titled 'Nakano no Lion' tells about what happened in the 1950s. She wrote that she had seen a lion with a guy looking out a window of an apartment from the train on her way home. She also wrote how she found it true through a phone call from the guy with the lion in the next essay titled 'Shinjuku no Lion'.

　食について、ペットについてのトピックも多くみられます。そんな些末なことだけれど、時代とは関係の無い、普遍的なテーマこそ、向田邦子さんのもの書きとしての力が発揮されています。鉄という名前の日本犬のエピソードが心に残りました。

　There are topics about food, and pets. Those essays with such trivial, but also timeless themes show how great she was as an essayist. An episode about her dog named Tetsu is unforgettable.

　向田邦子さんは、1981年に飛行機事故で亡くなられています。「ヒコーキ」と題したエッセイでは、飛行機をこわいと思う気持ちが綴られています。絶対に堕ちない飛行機を発明してほしい、と心底願ってしまいます。

　Kuniko Mukouda passed away due to an airplane crash in 1981. She wrote about her fear of airplane crash in an essay titled 'Hikoki'. I hope they can develop airplanes that never crash from the bottom of my heart.

ブック・レビュー: 向田邦子ベスト・エッセイ Book Reviews: Kuniko Mukouda’s Best Essays

　子どもの頃から、いつか読みたい作家の１人でした。最近、友人からおすすめされたのを良い機会と、ついに読むことにしました。すばらしい読書の時間となりました。

　She was one of the authors I had wanted to read their works but I hadn't since my childhood. My best friend recommended this book to me lately so I finally read it. And I found it amazing.

向田邦子ベスト・エッセイ (ちくま文庫)

　自分が小さい頃、テレビには、向田邦子さん脚本のドラマが溢れていたように思います。でも、「時間ですよ」も「寺内貫太郎一家」もちゃんと観たことがありません。いわゆるお茶の間を舞台にした家族劇に興味を持つには、幼すぎたのでしょう。

　I remember that there were so many TV dramas based on scripts written by a playwright called Kuniko Mukouda. However, I've never watched her dramas properly even some famous ones like 'Jikan Desuyo', or 'Terauchi Kantaro Ikka'. They were so-called family sitcoms and I guess I was too young to be interested in them.

　自分にとって向田邦子さんのお名前は、書店の文庫本コーナーでお見かけするのが常でした。何度か手にとって、表紙裏の紹介文に目を通し、読んでみたいエッセイだなと思っていたことは覚えています。でも、その都度、他にもっと面白そうな本を見つけて、結局は後回しにしてきたのでした。

　I often saw her name written on paperbacks in bookstores. I somtimes picked up some of them to read the summary on the back and thought they were quite interesting essays. But I always chose other books that seemed more enjoyable thinking they could wait.

　エッセイというのは、最も作家の力量が問われるジャンルに違いありません。題材は、日常の些末な出来事です。読ませるには、どれだけ共感を呼び起こし、同時に意表を突く視点で切り込んでいくかが鍵になります。

　Essay must be a challenging genre for authors. The topics in there are usually trivial matters. It is important to make readers empathized and surprised with unexpected perspectives.

　エッセイにはもう一つ難点があります。取り上げたトピックがその時代の旬であるだけに、数年経つともう古臭い印象になってしまうということです。そうなるかならないかは、作家の価値観にかかっているのではないでしょうか。

　There is one more thing that makes essay challenging for authors. The most topics are trendy things of the time so they could be out of date just after several years. What matters to avoid that from happening is author's sense of values.

　そうした課題の全てをクリアしているのが向田邦子さんのエッセイです。面白くないわけがありません。続きは次回で。

　The essays by Mukouda perfectly cleared all those problems. You can enjoy them for sure. To be continued.

読みハマる本：西村賢太作「蠕動で渉れ、汚泥の川を」 Books I was hooked on: 'Zendou de Watare Odei no Kawa wo (Wriggle to Cross The Filthy River)' by Kenta Nishimura

　友人おすすめの本に衝撃を受けました。西村賢太作、「蠕動で渉れ、汚泥の川を」です。338ページの文庫本ですが、一晩で一気読みでした。

　I was deeply impressed by a book my friend recommended. The book is 'Zendou de Watare Odei no Kawa wo (Wriggle to Cross The Filthy River)' by Kenta Nishimura. It is a paperback with 338 pages and I binge-read it overnight.

蠕動で渉れ、汚泥の川を (角川文庫)

　以下、裏表紙の作品紹介です。

　The following is the summary on the back of the book cover.

こんな青春も存在するｰｰｰ。17歳。中卒。日雇い。人品に難あり。しかし北町貫多は今日も生きるｰｰｰ。無気力、無目的に流浪の日々を送っていた貫多は、下町の洋食屋に住み込みで働き始めた。案外の居心地の良さに、このまま料理人の道を目指す思いも芽生えるが、やがて持ち前の無軌道な性格から、自らその希望を潰す行為に奔りだすｰｰｰ。善だの悪だのを超越した、負の青春の肖像。渾身の長編私小説！ 

　There could be a teenager who lives this way... He is seventeen,  a junior high graduate,  a day laborer,  and has a difficult personality. Nevertheless,  the boy called Kanta Kitamach tries to live on his own way. After spending days lethargically, aimlessly, he ends up working and living in a restaurant. His new life is unexpectedly comfortable for him so he feels like getting the skills as a cook, but he spoils every opportunity due to his own impatience. This is a novel which describes an unsuccessful teenager's life regardless of being good or evil.  This is also the author's challenging work that is based on his real life. 

　この作品の対極にあるものを挙げるとすると、ハリー・ポッターなどのファンタジー小説でしょうか。いわば理想化された世界と人物群の中で繰り広げられる、起承転結のある物語です。西村賢太の描く世界が、ある意味痛快に思えるのは、そんな虚飾の一切を暴力的なまでに排除しているからかもしれません。

　When I think of something opposite of this book, the first one that comes in mind is fantasy novels like Harry Potter. What you can see there is a story with good plots set in an ideal world and people. I suppose the reason that the world depicted by Nishimura is, in a way, exhilarating is he ignors all those elements to the extent that I can call it violently. 

　主人公、北町貫多の心理、行動は、全ての男子が理解できるものだと思います。貫多みたいなことにならないように、一生懸命、注意深く生きているのが男子という生き物ではないでしょうか。そして、ほとんどの男子はうまくそれをやりこなしていて、安全な立場にいながらこの物語に浸り、スリルを味わえるのだと思います。

　It is perfectly understandable for all men what Kanta Kitamachi, the protagonist, thinks or does. All of us including me carefully try to avoid making mistakes that Kanta tends to do. And most of us manage to do it succesfully so we can enjoy this story safely even feeling some thrills. 

　読書の奨励というとき、一般的には知識や教養を身につけることが想定されているのでしょう。この本は、そんなものを期待できるものではないかもしれません。でも、青春時代に出会ってほしい、または自分がその時代に出会いたかったのは、こんな本だったのだと思います。

　When it comes to encouraging students to read books, what to be expected there is getting knowledge or cultivation. In that meaning, maybe this book is not the right one. Even so, I believe this book is exactly the one that I want young people to read, and I also wish I could have met this book when I was young.

プラモデル楽しい！: 1/24 ベントレー 4.5L Blower① Building Plastic Models Is Fun!: 1:24 Bentley 4.5L Blower①

　自分が何を作りたいのか、考える時間も楽しいものです。前回のトヨタ2000GTの時のように、お店に積まれた箱の中から選ぶのも、めちゃくちゃワクワクします。でも、今回のベントレーは、自分が見たところ長崎のお店にはなさそうだったので、ネットで検索して購入しました。

　It is fun to decide what to make. Last time, I chose the TOYOTA 2000 GT among a lot of boxes in a toy shop, and I was so excited while doing so. However, I searched the Internet for this Bentley to buy, because, the way I see it, it seemed not to be found at any shops in Nagasaki.

　ベントレーに乗りたい、などと思ったことは一度もありません。それはトヨタ2000GTについても同様です。一見、無関係なこの２台ですが、実は両方とも同じ理由で選びました。

　I've never thought I want to own the Bentley. The same goes for the TOYOTA 2000 GT. Although there seem to be no relation between them, I actually chose both of them with the same reason.

　どちらもジェームズ・ボンドが乗った車です。ご存じの方も多いと思いますが、トヨタ2000GTは映画、「007は二度死ぬ」に登場します。しかし、ベントレーは007シリーズの映画のどの作品にも出てきません。

　James Bond drove both. As you may know, the TOYOTA 2000 GT appears in the movie called You Only Live Twice. However, you cannot find the Bentley in any episodes of the movie series.

　ベントレーは、007の原作におけるジェームズ・ボンドの愛車です。第一作の「カジノ・ロワイヤル」では、この車についての描写がところどころにみられます。今回購入したモデルはその描写と一致しているように思います。

 　You can find Bond driving the Bentley in the novels. In Casino Royale, the first novel, the descriptions about this car can be seen here and there. According to those descriptions, the model car I bought this time may be identical to the one Bond owned.

　現在のところ、このベントレーはどのプラモデルメーカーからも出ていないようです。購入したものは中古品で、ドイツのエレール製を、ツクダホビーが日本で販売したものの模様。けっこうな値段でしたが全部楽天のポイントで支払いました。

 It seems that the plastic models of this Bentley are not currently produced by any makers. The one I bought was secondhand and it was produced by HELLER in Germany then sold by Tsukuda Hobby, a Japanese company. It cost quite a lot but I paid with the points of Rakuten credit card.

　届いた箱は、やや色褪せていました。長い間、お店の棚に眠っていたのでしょうか。でも、部品やデカールも劣化はないようで安心しました。

　I found the box faded a little when it was delivered. I wondered that it might have been on a store shelf for a long time. However, all the parts and decals seemed alright, so I was relieved.

不朽の名作漫画：「あしたのジョー」 A Masterpiece of Manga That Never Fades: ‘Tomorrow’s Joe’

あしたのジョー（１） (週刊少年マガジンコミックス)

　シリーズ全20巻を久しぶりに読み返しました。もう何度目でしょう。読むたびに感動は深まります。巧みな構成に唸ります。切なさに涙がこぼれます。男子でこの漫画が好きじゃないという人はいるのでしょうか。

　I reread all 20 volumes after a long time. I’m not sure how many times I've read them. The more I read, the more I was moved. I’m impressed by the well-woven plots. I was moved to tears by a wistful pang. I wonder if there is any guy who doesn’t like this manga.

　どこからともなくドヤ街にたどり着いた一人の不良少年が、そこで出会ったボクサー崩れの中年男とともに、拳闘の世界でのし上がっていく。簡潔にまとめるとそんなお話です。そう書くと、一つのサクセスストーリーに聞こえますが、そうとは言えません。描かれているのはむしろ、避けようのない破滅へと向かう一つの人生です。主人公、矢吹丈は、幸せという言葉から最も遠いところにいる存在のように思います。

　A bad boy, who drifted to a slum, meets a middle-aged ex-boxer and they rise to fame in the boxing world. I can summarize the story that way. That may sound like a success story, but actually it isn’t. What is described there is an inevitably ruined life. Joe Yabuki, the main character, looks like one of the unhappiest people in the world.

　それにしてもジョーの魅力と来たらどうでしょう。腕っぷしの強さだけを頼りに肩で風を切って歩く、その自由で奔放な生きざまは、強いあこがれを誘います。一方で、親の顔も知らないような生い立ちや孤独、猜疑心の強さといったところに、同情や応援したい気持ちが掻き立てられます。そして、子どもたちや、時には戦い終えた相手に対して垣間見せる優しさこそが、このキャラクターを愛すべきものに仕立て上げているのではないでしょうか。

　Come to think of it, Joe is a really attractive character. The way he swaggers along with his great strength is what every guy longs for. On the contrary, his unfortunate early background as an orphan, his solitude and suspiciousness of other people call fwor compassion and also make readers feel like encouraging him. Plus, his kindness, which he sometimes shows to children and even his opponents, is what makes him attractive the most.   

　久しぶりに読み返してみて、この物語における、白木葉子という存在の重要さを思い知りました。ジョーに対して終始、批判的な態度をとる彼女ですが、ジョーの人となりを真に理解し、彼の幸福を心から願い、実際に行動しているのは彼女だけです。そして、彼女のそんな行動こそが、ジョーを破滅に追いやってしまうのでした。葉子がジョーを愛していることを自覚するのは物語も終盤ですが、読者はそこで、このお話が実はラブストーリーであったことに気付きます。葉子がいなければ、ジョーは力石と出会わなかったし、世界王者との試合で燃え尽きてしまうこともなかったのです。

　またいつの日か読み直すことと思います。

　What I realized after rereading this manga after a long time was the importance of a character called Yoko Shiraki. Although she is always judgmental against Joe, she is the only person who truly understands his personality, not only hopes for his happiness from the bottom of her heart but also does what she can to help him. However, her behavior ends up ruining Joe’s life. Yoko finally finds herself loving Joe at the end of the story, when readers learn that this is actually a love story. Without Yoko, Joe would have never met Rikiishi, would have never finished the match against the world champ that way.

　I’m sure I will read this manga again someday.
