007シリーズ「わたしを愛したスパイ」第三章のタイトルは「あの人」です。嵐の夜のモーテルで、ギャングの二人組に追い詰められる主人公ヴィヴ。間一髪で彼女を救ったのは、車がパンクしたため、たまたまそのモーテルを訪れたジェームズ・ボンドなのでした。
The title of the third chapter of 'The Spy Who Loved Me', one of the 007 novels, is 'him'. The main character called Viv is cornered by two gangsters in the motel on a stormy night. The guy who narrowly rescued her is James Bond, who visits there by chance due to a flat tire.
不審な二人組の目的は、火災保険金詐欺でした。留守番をしていたヴィヴの不始末に見せかけて火災を起こすために、派遣されていたのです。彼らにとってジェームズ・ボンドの登場は予想外のことであり、ヴィヴもろとも彼を殺そうとするも反撃され、目的を果たすどころか結局は命を落としてしまいます。
The purpose of the two gangsters is fire insurance fraud. They were sent to set fire to the motel putting the blame on Viv for it. James Bond comes like a bolt out of the blue for them, and they try to kill him along with Viv but fail and end up being killed by him.
任務外でのジェームズ・ボンドの活躍が見られるという点で、このお話は興味深く思えます。主人公ヴィヴからすると、たまたま訪れて彼女を救ってくれた彼は、ヒーロー以外の何者でもありません。この一人称の物語は、次の文章で締めくくられます。
What makes this novel quite interesting is you can see James Bond doing something privately in it. He visited the motel totally by chance and saved her, so he was surely a hero for Viv. This story ends with the sentences below.
「スパイ？あの人が何をしようと、わたしは平気だ。番号？その番号も、わたしはもう忘れてしまった。わたしはただ、あの人がだれで、あのひとがなんであったかはっきりわかっている。それに、あの人のすべて、こまかいことのすべてが、永久にわたしの心に書きとどめられているだろう。」
“A secret agent? I didn’t care what he did. A number? I had already forgotten it. I knew exactly who he was and what he was. And everything , every smallest detail, would be written on my heart for ever.
シリーズの中でも独特の余韻を残して終わるこの作品は、自分にとってとても愛おしく思える一作です。さて、話は思いきり逸れてしまいましたが、MGBのプラモデルです。前回のベントレーに比べると、部品数も少なく、いくぶん簡単に仕上げることができたように思います。
This novel gives me a different impression from other 007 stories and is so lovable for me. But I digress, I'd like to talk about the model car of MGB again. I felt building it was somewhat easy in comparison with the Bentley because the number of the parts was fewer than that of the Bentley.
今回、痛感したのはピンセットややすり、マスキングテープなどのツールの必要性です。それらなしでは、結局納得のいく仕上りにできないことを思い知りました。ついにプラモデルのショップを訪れて、いくつかのツールを購入してしまいました。
This time I realized the necessity of some tools like tweezers, files, masking tape and so forth. Without them, I found it is difficult to complete it as I like. So I finally visited a hobby store to buy some of them.
ちなみに、「わたしを愛したスパイ」でジェームズ・ボンドが乗っていた車は、フォードのサンダーバードでした。レンタカーとはいえ、イギリス車とはずいぶんかけ離れた車で、ボンドカーとしてはやはりふさわしくないように感じます。ネットで調べてみましたが、サンダーバードのプラモデルは、意外にも入手が難しいようです。
By the way, the car which James Bond drove in this book was a Ford Thunderbird. Although he rented it, the car is totally different from British ones so, in my opinion, it is not suitable for him to drive it. I checked online and learnt it is unexpectedly quite difficult to buy the model car of it.
