お盆休みの前、出勤すると机のそばに大きな紙袋がドカッと置かれていました。大量の漫画本です。笑顔で近づいてきた同僚の一言は、「読んでみてください」でした。全31巻、ええっ！こんなに！とたじろぎましたが、案の定ハマって、お盆休みに一気読みしてしまいました。ストーリーもキャラも小ギャグも、全てが愛おしく思える素敵な作品です。ずっとワクワクして、ところどころクスクス笑ったり、涙ぐんだりしていました。「ゴールデンカムイ」というこの超人気漫画、名前だけは聞いていましたが、どんなお話か全く知りませんでした。
In a morning before Bon holidays, I found a paper bag sitting heavily beside my desk at my workplace. It contained a lot of manga comics in it. A coworker, who approached me with a smile on his face, said, “Just enjoy it”. It was a series of manga with 31 volumes, and I was like, “Oops! So mamy!”, but I ended up binge-reading it during the Bon holidays. I loved the story, all the characters, and tiny jokes in it. It was constantly exhilarating, and I sometimes giggled and sometimes couldn’t hold back the tears. This is a serial manga called ‘Golden Kamuy’, which is a really famous one even though I had only known its title and had no idea what the story was like before .
物語の始まりは、日露戦争の一場面です。自ら不死身と豪語する主人公、杉本佐一の凄惨な戦闘の様が描かれます。戦後、ある理由から一攫千金をもくろむ杉本は、北海道へと向かい、見つけられそうもない砂金堀に空しく日々を費やします。当時、砂金堀の男たちの間では、一つの噂が広まっていました。それは、北海道のどこかに、アイヌが集めた莫大な金塊が眠っているというものです。杉本は、ひょんなことからその噂話を裏付けるような事件に巻き込まれてしまいます。そしてその渦中で出会うアイヌの少女、アシリパとともに、アイヌの金塊を巡る熾烈な抗争に巻き込まれていくのでした。
It starts with a scene of Russo-Japanese War. Saichi Sugimoto, a soldier, who calls himself immortal, fights fiercely there. After the war, he goes to Hokkaido to be a gold miner because he wants to get rich quick for a certain reason, but he spends days in vain. There was a rumor among panners at that time. Rumor has it that there must be a great amount of gold, which Ainu people buried, somewhere in Hokkaido. Sugimoto is involved in an incident, which proves the rumor true, by chance. He meets a girl called Asirpa in the incident and finds himself totally involved in a conflict over the gold with Asirpa.
キャラがそそり立っています。杉本佐一もアシリパも実に魅力的です。スケールの大きい話だけに、味方も敵も途方もない数のキャラクターが登場するのですが、それぞれの性格や生い立ちといったものが丁寧に書かれていて、一人一人に愛着が持てます。自分が最も好きなキャラクターは脱獄王を名乗る白石という遊び人キャラです。もう愛おしくてなりません。このお話には、冒険活劇としての面白さに加え、アイヌ民族の独特の文化、幕末の混沌の余韻を残す明治時代といった、興味を掻き立てる要素がふんだんに盛り込まれています。長いお話なのに、ダレルことがありません。その面白さは最後まで続き、まさに大団円といった高揚感の中で読み終えることができます。絡み合った伏線の一つ一つもきちんと回収する見事さです。漫画の面白さを忘れかけている方に、ぜひ読んでほしい作品です。
Every character is impressively distinctive. Both Sugimoto, Asirpa are really lovable. The story is such a spectacle that numerous characters show up, some are allies of Sugimoto and the others are his enemy, and every character has his or her own personality and background so you will be interested in them easily. My favorite one is a playboy called Shiraishi, who calls himself the king of escape artists. He is so funny and lovable. In addition to the exciting adventure, it has a lot of elements that makes you interested in, such as the unique cultures of Ainu, the romantic vibes of the Meiji era that still existed in the aftermath of the chaos caused at the end of the Edo period, and so on. It is a long story for sure, but never gets dull. You can enjoy it through the last page, and you will finish it with an elated feeling. Every plot is consistent without any questions unsolved. I highly recommend you read it if you have a feeling that you are forgetting how enjoyable it is to read manga.
