ここには明らかな人種差別があります。それは、作者フレミングの思想であると同時に、1950年代という時代における一つの通念だったことは否めません。70年近くが経った今でも、「Black Lives Matter」という言葉が叫ばれていることを考えると、この本を気軽に面白いと言うのははばかられます。このことを踏まえたうえで、敢えてこの物語の魅力というものを考えてみたいと思います。
You can see racial discrimination here for sure. It can be said that Ian Fleming, the author, had these thoughts and it was also a socially accepted idea in the 1950s. Considering the fact that people still have to say out loud, “Black Lives Matter”, even after almost 70 years has passed, I hesitate to say this book is so interesting. With that fact in mind, I’d still like to talk about the attractiveness of this story.
第1作の「カジノ・ロワイアル」というのは、今読んでみても物語としての斬新さやリアリティというものが伝わる作品です。それと同質のものをこの第2作に求めたとしたら、きっと期待外れに終わります。その代わりに、この第2作では、以降の作品に受け継がれていく、一つのスタイルが確立されます。それは、長期にわたって大衆に支持されるシリーズに特有なものであり、寅さんや水戸黄門を面白がる気分に通じるものです。実際に007シリーズの映画が、こんなに続いたのもそのためだと思います。
‘Casino Royale’, the first volume, is a work that makes you feel something new and realistic even now. If you anticipate the same thing in the second volume, I’m sure that you will be disappointed. Even so, you can see a style, that has been handed down to the rest of the volumes, and was already established then. That is something similar to some other series of works which are very popular with the general public, for example, the Torasan series, the Mitokomon series, and so on. Actually, the 007 movie series has continued for such a long time and the reason for it is that style, I guess.
ここで確立された物語の道具立てというのは、第一に、現実離れした犯罪行為を途方もない規模で行う敵キャラクターです。この作品ではミスタービッグという、ニューヨークのハーレムを牛耳る人物がそれにあたります。第二は、とても魅力的な女性、いわゆるボンドガールが登場し、窮地の姫を救うヒーローの役割をボンドが担い、満身創痍になりながらも最後は彼女を手に入れるという、まことに都合のいい展開です。本作では、ミス・ソリティアというある種の予知能力をもった女性が登場します。第3は、ボンドの味方として好人物が登場し、その人物が敵の卑劣な罠にかかって悲惨な目に遭うことにより、敵キャラの破滅を正当化するというプロットです。本作では、第一作でも登場したフェリックス・ライターが、鮫のいる水槽に落とされて片腕と片足を失うという恐ろしいエピソードが描かれます。このほかにも、イギリス海軍情報部本部でのMから任務を伝えられる際のユーモアあふれるやりとりや、Qと呼ばれる課から、任務を安全・確実に遂行するために必要な装備が支給されるくだりなど、この物語のベタと言っていいものが、まだ不完全とは言えこの第2作で示されます。
There are some structural elements of the style, and the first one is the villain who commits unrealistic crime on a massive scale. In this volume, the villain called Mister Big, who controls gangsters in Harlem, N.Y., appears. Second, an attractive woman so called Bond girl shows up in every volume, and Bond acts as a hero rescuing a damsel in distress, then ends up winning her heart despite being covered with wounds, a stereotyped ending, though. A girl called Solitair, who has a kind of the power to foresee the future, appears in this story. Third, there is a likable guy in every episode, who works with Bond but he is always caught in a trap and ends up having a terrible experience so that readers are convinced of the dreadful death of the villain. In this volume, Felix Leiter, who appeared in the first volume, was tricked into falling down into a tank where there is a shark so he loses an arm and a leg. In addition to these things, you can see some typical settings of this series, not completed yet though, such as quite a humorous meeting with M telling Bond about his assignment at MI6 headquarters, a scene where Bond receives some equipment which makes his task secure from a department called Q, and so on.
これらの設定は、マンネリ化すると、すぐに飽きられるものです。実際に映画のシリーズではそれを感じました。ダニエル・クレイグによる007になってからは、これが打破されましたが、それと引き換えに能天気な筋書きゆえのユーモアが失われたのも事実です。それでも、いよいよ映画の最新作「ノー・タイム・トゥ・ダイ」が公開されることになり、ワクワクが止まりません。
These settings tend to become stereotyped so people would soon be fed up with them. Actually, I felt that way toward the movie series. Something has changed since Daniel Craig was featured as 007, but the easygoing, humorous atmosphere has disappeared instead. Now, I’m so excited with the long-awaited release of the latest episode called ‘No Time to Die’.
