シリーズの中でも異色の作品です。そう感じる一番の理由は、海外情報部員であるはずのボンドの行き先が、イギリス国内であることです。それも、ドーバー海峡に面する白亜の崖、そこに建設されたミサイル発射基地という限られた場所が、今作におけるボンドの活躍の舞台になります。
This work is quite unusual of all the episodes in this series. The main reason is that Bond, who is a member of the Secret Intelligence Service, works in the UK in this episode. The place where he goes is the missile launching site located on the White Cliffs of Dover, which faces the Strait of Dover.
物語の冒頭で描かれるのは、特別な任務がないときの００課の日常業務の様子です(この時点の課員は、007、008、0011の模様)。射撃訓練や書類に目を通すだけの仕事にうんざりしているボンドの姿がユーモラスに描かれます。そこにMからの呼び出しがかかり、退屈を抜け出せると期待するボンドですが、Mの用件はプライベートなものでした。それは、彼の行きつけであるブレイズクラブという会員制のカードクラブで、ある人物が行っているいかさまを止めてほしいという、奇妙な依頼だったのです。その人物とはヒューゴ・ドラックス卿。私財を投げうってイギリスのために核弾頭ミサイルとその基地を建設した話題の人物です。その晩、Mとともにブレイズクラブを訪れ、ドラックスのいかさまを見抜き、大金を得るボンドですが……。
This story starts with the daily work of the double 0 members when they have no special assignment (there seemed to be three members, 007, 008, and 0011, at that point). You can see that the author humorously described Bond getting tired of some tasks such as shooting practice, looking through some documents, and so on. Then he is summoned by M so he expects that he can get out of the boring situation, but it was about M’s private affairs. What he asks Bond was quite strange and it was to check a person cheating at cards at a private card club where M has a membership. The person is a man called Sir Hugo Drax. He is talked about everywhere because he built a nuclear-missile and the launching site at his own expense for the country. That night, bond visits the club with M and sees through the Drax’s trick so he wins a huge sum of money…….
このヒューゴ・ドラックスという一癖も二癖もある人物が、今回の悪役です。国民的な人気を誇る彼がなぜ、いかさまなどに手を出すのか、この人物の真の目的は何か、グイグイと読者を惹き込む原作者フレミングのストーリーテリングの巧さが光ります。本作でのボンドガールは、ドラックスの秘書、ガーラ・ブランドです。実は彼女はロンドン警視庁の腕利きの刑事であり、基地の安全を確実なものにするために送り込まれていたのでした。ボンドに冷淡な態度の彼女ですが、崖下のロケットの噴射孔をボンドと共に偵察した際、誰かが仕掛けた崖崩れの下敷きになるところをかろうじて免れたことをきっかけに、ボンドに協力するようになります。
任務を通じて、彼女と心を通い合わせたと思い込んでいるボンドですが、物語の終わりに見事に振られるという、意表を突いたエンディングも興味深い作品です。
Hugo Drax, who is a difficult person to deal with, is the leader of the villains of this story. I’m sure you will realize that Ian Flemming is a great storyteller through the way he makes readers curious about why such a popular guy like him cheats at cards, or what this guy’s purpose is. The Bond girl in this story is the Drax’s secretary called Gala Brand. She is actually an efficient Scotland Yard detective and was sent to the site to ensure the safety of the place. She gives the cold shoulder to him at first, but she begins to cooperate with him after they barely escaped from the landslide which was obviously caused by someone while they are looking around the vent for the exhaust of the rocket at the foot of the cliff.
Although Bond thought that he won her heart through the work, he ended up being rejected by her at the end of the story. You will be impressed by this unusual ending.
