やっぱりアイドルってすごい：エビ中オーディションを観て思ったこと Sure enough, an idol is so great!: My impression of the audition for the new member of Ebichu.

　4日間にわたる、新メンバーオーディション合宿の動画を、ユーチューブでまとめて視聴しました。7000人の応募者から絞られたという、9人の候補の頑張る姿に心を打たれました。思い知ったのは、アイドルになるって本当に大変なことなんだ、ということです。

　I watched the videos for the four-day audition camp to choose the new member of Ebichu on YouTube. I was moved by the great efforts of nine candidates who had been narrowed down out of 7000 applicants. What I realized this time was the fact that becoming an idol is really tough.

　「ハイタテキ！」、「誘惑したいや」のたった2曲をマスターするのがこんなに難しいものだとは思っていませんでした。考えてみると、自分もさんざ聴いているこの2曲ですが、やっぱり歌詞はうろ覚えです。ましてやダンスやフォーメーションまで同時にこなしていくというのは、気の遠くなるような作業です。

　I didn’t imagine that performing only two songs, ‘Haitateki!’and ‘Yuwakushitaiya’ was so difficult. Come to think of it, I’ve listen to these songs so many times but I don’t remember the lyrics exactly. So performing dances and shifting formations at the same time must be incredibly difficult.

　オーディションの様子を見つめるメンバーたちの真剣な表情に息を飲みました。そして、エビ中自身が飛び入りでパフォーマンスした「ハイタテキ！」を観て実感したのは、本物の凄さです。1人1人のオーラが違いました。プロフェッショナルとは何かを改めて考えさせられました。

　今日はエビ中メジャーデビュー9周年のライブ、そしていよいよ新メンバーの発表です。心から楽しみにしています。

　I held my breath for an instant when I saw the serious expressions on the members’ face while they were watching the audition. Then what I realized when I watched them unexpectedly perform ‘Haitateki’ was how great the real idols are. Each of them surely had a definite aura. I had a fresh think about what professionals should be like.

　Today, Ebichu is going to have concerts marking their ninth anniversary of their contract with the major label. Plus, they will introduce the member to us. I’m looking forward to it from the bottom of my heart.

歴史小説の楽しみ：司馬遼太郎著「竜馬がゆく」（第８巻） The Delights of Historical Novels: ‘Ryoma ga Yuku’ by Shiba Ryotaro (the eighth volume)

　大政奉還という途方もない構想を胸に、京に入る竜馬の姿から、この最後の巻は始まります。中岡慎太郎の奔走により、薩長による倒幕への準備はほぼ整っている中、竜馬の案を受け入れがたく思う向きも多いのでした。しかし、竜馬は放胆にも幕府の高官である永井尚志（なおむね）のもとを訪ね、大政奉還を提案し、その実現へとつなげたのでした。

　This volume starts with the scene where Ryoma enters Kyoto with the extreme idea, Taisei Hokan (Tokugawa Shogunate returns its political power to the Emperor) in his mind, Some people are reluctant to accept the idea because Satuma and Choshu are already getting ready to overthrow the shogunate due to the great effort by Nakaoka Shintaro. However, Ryoma is bold enough to visit Nagai Naomune, a high-ranked shogunate officer, to propose the idea trying to realize it.  

　第8巻の裏表紙に書かれているあらすじは、次の通りです。

　The summary written on the back cover of the eighth volume is as follows.

「慶応三年十月十三日、京は二条城の大広間で、十五代将軍徳川慶喜は大政を奉還すると表明した。ここに幕府の三百年近い政権は幕を閉じた。時勢はこの後、坂を転げるように維新にたどりつく。しかし竜馬はそれを見とどけることもなく、歴史の扉を未来へ押しあけたまま、流星のように……。」

“October 13^th, the 3^rd year of Keio (1867), The 15^th Shogun called Tokugawa Yoshinobu announced to return the political power to the Emperor in the large room of a castle called Nijojo. With that statement, the shogunate which had lasted nearly 3 hundred years came to an end. The current of the times rapidly reached the new era. However, Ryoma passed away without seeing it leaving the door of the history open like a shooting star…….”

　同時に竜馬は、薩長のために武器を調達するなど、いざ倒幕となったときの準備もぬかりなく進めます。しかし、その胸中、無用な流血は望んでいません。この間、新選組の近藤勇を含む多くの人物に会い、大政奉還のメリットを説いていきます。

　Ryoma, at the same time, steadily prepares for overthrowing the shogunate just in case by buying arms for Satsuma and Choshu. Even so, he doesn’t want unnecessary bloody conflict to happen. During that time, he meets many people including Kondo Isami, the leader of Shinsengumi, to tell them the merits of Taisei Hokan.

　そうしてついに、将軍徳川慶喜は大政奉還を宣します。その報を聞いて感激した竜馬が言った言葉は、次のようだったそうです。

「大樹公（将軍）、今日の心中さこそと察し奉る。よくも断じ給へるものかな、よくも断じ給へるものかな。予、誓ってこの公のために一命を捨てん。」

　Then Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the Shogun, finally announced Taisei Hokan. The following is what Ryoma said when he heard the news and deeply moved.  

“I know how the Shogun feels now. I am deeply impressed with his decision, I really do. I swear on my life that I will do everything for him.”

　竜馬の活躍は、ここで終わりません。かねて考えていた、新政府についての方針を岩倉具視に伝えます。そこには、憲法や議会、外国との為替にいたるまで、8か条にまとめられていました。当時、幕府を倒したその先まで見通しをもっていた人物が他にいたでしょうか。この竜馬のアイデアは明治政府により打ち出される五か条の御誓文に見事に反映されたのでした。

　He doesn’t stop there. He tells his ideas about some policies the new government should take to Iwakura Tomomi, an aristocrat. It is a document consists of eight clauses which mention about a constitution, a national assembly, foreign exchange and so on. I wonder whether there were other people who had ideas about what to do after overthrowing the shogunate. These ideas by Ryoma end up being reflected on the Imperial Covenant Consisting of Five Articles clearly.

　竜馬が中岡慎太郎と共に刺客に襲われるのは、大政奉還からほぼ1か月経った慶応三年十一月十五日です。この場面を司馬遼太郎さんは素っ気ないと思えるほどに淡々と綴ります。

　It was November 15^th, 1867 that Ryoma and Nakaoka Shintaro were attacked by assassins after a month had passed since Taisei Hokan had been announced. Shiba Ryotaro described the scene rather curtly and objectively.

　この長い物語は次のように締めくくられます。

「天が、この国の歴史の混乱を収拾するためにこの若者を地上にくだし、その使命がおわったとき惜しげもなく天へ召しかえした。

　この夜、京の天は雨気が満ち、星がない。」

 This long story ends with the following words.

“This young guy was sent from Heaven to settle the disorder in the history of this country, then summoned as soon as he had achieved the goal.

It was a rainy, starless night in Kyoto.”

歴史小説の楽しみ：司馬遼太郎著「竜馬がゆく」（第7巻） The Delights of Historical Novels: ‘Ryoma ga Yuku’ by Shiba Ryotaro (the seventh volume)

　第7巻の竜馬の活躍の舞台は長崎です。九州諸藩連合を立ち上げたり、後藤象二郎と手を組み、ついに土佐藩を薩長と結び付けたりします。

　In the seventh volume, the scene of Ryoma’s actibities was set in Nagasaki. He established Kyusyu Domains Alliance, then finally let the Tosa domain join Satsuma-Choshu alliance joining hands with Goto Shojiro.

　第7巻の裏表紙に書かれているあらすじは、次の通りです。

　The summary written on the back cover of the seventh volume is as follows.

「同盟した薩摩と長州は着々と倒幕の態勢を整えてゆく。が、竜馬はこの薩長に土佐等を加えた軍事力を背景に、思い切った奇手を案出した。大政奉還――幕府のもつ政権をおだやかに朝廷に返させようというものである。これによって内乱を避け、外国に侵食する暇を与えず、京で一挙に新政府を樹立する――無血革命方式であった。」

　Satsuma and Choshu joined in an alliance preparing for overthrowing the shogunate. However, Ryoma took a daring, strange method with the army power of Satsuma, Choshu, plus Tosa in the background. Taisei Hokan……it is an attempt to urge the Tokugawa shogunate to return the political power to the Emperor. With this method, he was going to avoid a civil war, and at the same time, prevent the foreign countries from intruding into Japan to establish a new government in Kyoto……that could be called a bloodless revolution.

　風雲の中に飛び込むのが遅れた竜馬ですが、一旦動き出したらもう目まぐるしいほどの活躍ぶりです。とはいっても、亀山社中はいつも資金繰りに困っており、思うような結果は出せずにいるのでした。おまけに紀州藩の船と衝突した社中の船が、積み荷とともに沈んでしまうという不運にも見舞われます。そんな中でも丸山の芸妓お元や女商人大浦お慶など、竜馬を放っておかない女性たちが登場し、物語の色彩を豊かにしていきます。

　He came late to the turbulent period but once he became active he hectically rushed around. However, Kameyama Shachu, the company he ran, was always struggling to raise funds and he didn’t achieve anything as he had expected. On top of that, their ship collided with a ship owned by Kishu domain and ended up sinking with its freight unfortunately. Meanwhile, he met some women such as Omoto, a geisha in Maruyama, Oura Okei, a female trader, and they make the story interesting even more.

　一方で、中岡慎太郎らの奔走により、京の岩倉具視と薩長による倒幕のお膳立てが整っていきます。そこに危うさを感じる竜馬の脳裏に浮かんだのが大政奉還という途方もないアイデアでした。

　On the other hand, Nakaoka Shintaro made great efforts to prepare for overthrowing the shogunate in collaboration with Iwakura Tomomi, an aristocrat in Kyoto, and the royalists from Satsuma and Choshu. Ryoma had a feeling that their plan is quite risky and came up with an extreme idea called Taisei Hokan (Tokugawa Shogunate returns its political power to the Emperor).

歴史小説の楽しみ：司馬遼太郎著「竜馬がゆく」（第６巻） The Delights of Historical Novels: ‘Ryoma ga Yuku’ by Shiba Ryotaro (the sixth volume)

　この巻からいよいよ坂本龍馬の本領が発揮されます。では、坂本龍馬の持つ才能とは何だったのでしょうか。それは、第一に取材能力であり、第二に集めた情報を分析・総合し、将来を展望する能力だと思います。ここまでなら常人の範囲かもしれませんが、かれのすごさは、その展望に基づく行動力・実行力ではないでしょうか。そして、それらの能力が彼の人格的魅力と相まって発揮されたとき、時代を動かすほどの影響力を産み出したのだと思います。

　Sakamoto Ryoma begins to show what he is made of from this volume. By the way, what was Ryoma’s talent like. First, he had the ability for collecting data, and second, he also had the ability to analyze and put things together to predict the future. You may say those abilities are nothing special but the greatest thing about him is the energy and the power to act based on the prospect.  

　第６巻の裏表紙に書かれているあらすじは、次の通りです。

　The summary written on the back cover of the sixth volume is as follows.

「幕府を倒すには薩摩と長州が力を合わせれば可能であろう。しかし互いに憎悪しあっているこの両藩が手を組むとは誰も考えなかった。奇蹟を、一人の浪人が現出した。竜馬の決死の奔走によって、慶応二年一月、幕府の厳重な監視下にある京で、密かに薩長の軍事同盟は成った。維新への道はこの時、大きく未来に開かれたのである。」

“It’s not impossible to overthrow Tokugawa shogunate if Satsuma and Choshu join hands in that. However, there was no one who believed such thing would happen because those two domains were on very bad terms. A ronin did a miracle. Ryoma did that with a do-or-die spirit and the Satsuma-Choshu alliance was achieved in Kyoto under the severe surveillance by the shogunate in January 1866. The road to overthrowing the shogunate opened wide then.”

　この時期の他の志士たちは、瀕死の状態の長州藩とともに戦うことしか考えていませんでした。しかし、竜馬はもっと違う角度から事態を解決しようとします。それは、船舶による物資の輸送・売買を通じて、長州藩、薩摩藩を利害で結びつけ、協力させていくという、現実に即したものです。そしてその調停者として彼自身が動こうとするのでした。

　Most of royalists were just thinking of fighting together with Choshu which was on the verge of death at that time. However, Ryoma tried to break a deadlock viewing the situation from a different angle. What he did was something more practical, and it was to bind those two domains with common interests. Then he undertook mediation between them.

　その動きの中で、竜馬はいよいよ長崎を本拠地として、亀山社中を立ち上げます。そしてようやく手に入れた気帆船、ユニオン号を操り、幕長戦争において、高杉晋作らとともに活躍し、長州藩を勝利に導きます。この前後、寺田屋で新選組に襲われたり、そのときに受けた傷の治療を兼ねて、鹿児島へ新婚旅行に行ったりと、この時期の竜馬の目まぐるしい動きを、司馬遼太郎さんは巧みに描き、読者を惹きつけます。

　In the course of his action, he established a company called Kameyama Shachu in Nagasaki. Then he guided Choshu through the war against the shogunate to victory cooperating with Takasugi Shinsaku steering a sailing boat featuring a steam engine, the name of the ship was Union, which he finally obtained. Around that time he was attacked and wounded by Shinsengumi in an inn called Teradaya and then went to Kagoshima partly on honeymoon and partly to heal the wounds. Shiba Ryotaro describe his hectic activities skillfully to fascinate readers.

ライブレポート：私立恵比寿中学 Best at the moment series「6Voices」福岡公演② A Live Report: Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku, Best at the moment series ‘6 Voices in Fukuoka’②

　このツアーのタイトルにある「6Voices」の意味は、観ているうちに伝わってきました。メンバーの一人一人が交代で主役になっていくような構成だったように思います。もちろん、安本彩花さんも含めてです。

　I gradually understand the meaning of ‘6Voices’ in the tour title while watching their performances. Every one of them had chances to sing as the lead vocal in turn. Yasumoto Ayaka was also given chances, of course.

　今回、ステージのバックボード全面がスクリーンとして生かされており、様々な映像が効果的に流されていました。そこにはしばしば安本彩花さんの姿が映されましたが、彼女がメインの曲では、まさに主役として輝く演出になっていました。会場のペンライトもグリーンにされている方が多くいました。

　The backboard on the stage was fully used as a screen, and various kinds of videos were effectively played on it. Yasumoto Ayaka often appeared there and performed brilliantly in the songs in which she sang as a main vocalist. I saw a lot of people had their glow sticks lit green.

　わざわざ6人であることを強調した最大の理由は、これが6人で行う最後のツアーだったからでしょう。現在、新メンバーのオーディションが進行中です。次のツアーからは、7人でのパフォーマンスになるにちがいありません。このことについて、ファンの心がざわつくのはもちろんですが、メンバーたちも、様々な想いがあるに決まっています。

　The reason they unnecessarily emphasized ‘6 voices’ is, in my opinion, this is the last tour for them performing with 6 members. The audition for the new member is taking place now. They will perform with 7 members from the next tour. Most fans have mixed feelings about the new member, of course, and the members are also feeling mixed emotions for sure.

　このコンサートの終わりに、柏木ひなたさんは、その胸中を手紙にして読んでくれました。その中でまず、6人で頑張ってきたこの3年間、「エビ中PRIDEを超えていない」という声が聞かれたことの悔しさが語られました。そんなことを気にするなんて柏木ひなたさんらくない、と哀しくなりましたが、次の言葉を聞いて大いに頷きました。「最新のエビ中が最強のエビ中」、です。「エビ中PRIDE」後のアルバム「MUSiC」でファンになった自分にとってはこの6人が最高のエビ中だと思っていました。そして、それ以前のアルバムを遡って聴いて思ったのは、エビ中はどの瞬間も最高だということです。新しいメンバーが入って7人になっても、そこにはやっぱり最高のエビ中があるに違いありません。

　At the end of the concert, Kashiwagi Hinata read her own message out loud. What she said first was the shame she had felt during the last three years spent with 6 members because she had heard many people say, ‘their performances have not been better than that of Ebichu PRIDE’. I felt sad because it was not like her to say such a negative thing but I was soon exhilarated with her words, ‘The latest Ebichu is the most powerful Ebichu’. I became a fan of them when I heard their album called ‘MUSiC’, which was released after Ebichu PRIDE, and the Ebichu with 6 members has been the best for me.  Then I traced back their previous albums and what I realized was Ebichu has been awesome all the time. I’m sure that we will see them eternally awesome even after the new member joins and they perform with 7 members.   

　安本彩花さんも戻ってきます。また一つ大きな試練を乗り越えたエビ中は、大きな進化を遂げることでしょう。ひとつの節目として、このツアーは心に残るものとなりました。

　Yasumoto Ayaka is going to come back some time in the future. They now overcome an ordeal again and will show their evolution. I have a feeling that this tour was an important turning point so it was something memorable for me.

ライブレポート：私立恵比寿中学 Best at the moment series「6Voices」福岡公演① A Live Report: Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku, Best at the moment series ‘6 Voices in Fukuoka’

　やっぱりエビ中は最強です。どの曲でも最高のパフォーマンスで魅せてくれる、素晴らしいグループです。エビ中が好きでよかったと、心の底から思わせてくれるコンサートでした。

　Ebichu is surely the most powerful idol group. They are great enough to fascinate the audience with their best performance in every song. It was a concert which made me feel that I was happy to have been fan of them from the bottom of my heart.

　自分にとって、ライブに行くこと自体、1年以上ぶりです。長崎から福岡に向かう道中でもうワクワクしていました。エビ中に関しては、2019年の秋冬ツアー福岡公演以来、2回目の登校です。このところ、オンラインライブも悪くないと思っていましたが、やはり生の迫力にはかないません。

　It has been more than a year since I last went to a concert. I was already excited on the way to Fukuoka from Nagasaki. As for Ebichu’s concert, this was the second time for me to go to and the first one was the fall and winter tour in 2019. I’ve had a feeling that online concert is not so bad recently but I realized that the real live concert is incomparable to that.

　20曲を超えるセトリはこれまでのアルバム、シングルからバランスよく選ばれているように思いました。出だしの3曲で言うと、1曲目の「おめかしフィーバー」は直近のアルバム「playlist」から,2曲目の「制服“報連相”ファンク」は４thアルバムの「エビクラシー」から、3曲目は1stアルバム「中人」から「放課後ゲタ箱ロッケンロールＭＸ」といった具合です。

　The setlist consisted of over 20 numbers and they were impartially picked out from most of their albums and a few singles. Regarding with the first three songs, the first one called ‘Omekashi Fever’ was from their latest album called ‘playlist’, the second one, ‘Seihuku “HoRenSo” Funk’ was from the 4^th album called ‘Ebicracy’, and the third one, ‘Hokago Getabako Rock and Roll MX’, was from the 1^st album called ‘Chunin’’.

　凄いと思ったのは、MCを全く入れずに、ほぼ休みなくパフォーマンスが続いたことです。このままMC無しで終わるのかとすら思いました。ようやく自己紹介があったのは、アンコールに相当する最後の3曲を残した時点でした。本当にタフなグループです。

　以下、次回に続きます。

　What I was impressed by the most was the fact that they continued performing without MC. I even thought that they would finish without MC. It was not until they had only three songs left as encores that they finally introduced themselves to the audience. They are really tough.

　Finishing this article, I just took a look at Twitter and find the news which said, ‘Akimoto Ayaka obtained remission from a malignant lymphoma’! I’m trembling with joy.

安本彩花ですが、悪性リンパ腫が寛解しました事をご報告いたします。
今後の活動につきましては、医師と相談しながらできる仕事から始めていく予定です。
ライブパフォーマンスの復帰時期は未定です。決まり次第、改めてお知らせいたします。

エビ中カレンダーで知った曲：私立恵比寿中学「大好きだよ」 A Song I Learned from the Calendar Featuring Ebichu: ‘Daisukidayo’ by Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku

　2013年リリースの３rdシングル「梅」の限定版の一つに収録されていた曲だそうです。エビ中カレンダーで初めて知りました。初期のエビ中にふさわしい、とってもかわいい曲です。

　This is a song from one of the limited CD for their 3^rd single called ‘Ume’ released in 2013. I learned this song from the Ebichu calendar. It is a really cute song you would expect of the early songs by Ebichu.

　The more you listen to it, the more you like it. This song is metioned on the page of the 14^th day on the Ebichu calendar. You can see a few words by Yasumoto Ayaka along the title of this song, and it goes as follows.

“If you don’t say,‘I love you’, you can’t gain the love”

　今夜は、エビ中の福岡公演に登校します。声を出すことはできないでしょうが、大好きという気持ちを伝えてきたいと思います。新譜が出ていない中での公演ですから、セトリについては予想がつきません。こうした初期の曲も演奏してくれるのでは、と期待しています。

　I will go to their concert in Fukuoka tonight. I know I can’t say anything out lout there but I will somehow tell them how I love them. I can’t make any predictions about the setlist because they haven’t released a new album for a long time. I have an expectation that they may play their early songs like this.  

　今夜、コンサートのあとにエビ中ファミリーにとってもう一つ楽しみがあります。午後9時から、新メンバーのオーディションの模様がYouTubeで配信されるのです。新しいメンバーも絶対大好きになるに決まっています。。

　There is one more thing that the fans of Ebichu are looking forward to.  That is a YouTube video featuring the audition for the new member. I’m sure I will like the new member no matter what she is like.
