一気に読んだ本：高岡ヨシ著「五厘クラブ」 Books I Read at a Stretch：”Gorin Club” by Yoshi Takaoka

　子どもの頃から読書にこもりがちでした。友達が遊びの誘いに来ても、読みたい本があれば姑息に居留守をしていました。好き嫌いはあります。自分でも基準はわからないのですが、ベストセラーであっても、冒頭の数ページで入り込めなければ、素直に読まないことにしています。

　I tended to withdraw in my shell reading books when I was a boy. If some friends came and asked me to play with outside, I even didn’t answer the door. I have my likes and dislikes about books. I’m not sure how to judge it myself, but I make a point of quitting to read if I can’t be into the book within the first few pages, even if it is a best-seller.

　高岡ヨシさんの作品は、美味しいラーメンのスープのように、すっと沁みてくるから不思議です。「歩けばいい」、「アーティフィシャルフラワー」とこれまで２作品読みましたが、特別な事件や驚きの展開がなくとも、自然と主人公に共感し、最後まで読み通してしまいます。今回読んだ「五厘クラブ」は、先の２作品よりも前に出されたもののようです。この物語は、主人公の回想をもとに綴られていきます。 

五厘クラブ

 　It’s strange, but for some reason or other the works by Yoshi Takaoka naturally permeate my heart like a tasty ramen soup does my body. I’ve read two works of him, “Arukeba Ii” and “Artificial flowers” so far, I went through these works feeling empathy to the main character naturally even if there isn’t any special events or amazing plots. “Gorin Club”, the work I read this time, seems to pe published before the two works I mentioned. This story takes the style that the main character talks about his memories.

　カナダ在住の主人公タカクラは、日本に帰省する機内で、「五厘クラブ」の年表を見直しています。五厘クラブとは、同じ団地内に住む４人の仲間から始まったものです。はじめはただの遊び仲間だったのですが、様々な出来事を通して、固い絆で結ばれていったのでした。帰省の目的は、五厘クラブの「生前葬」。これを提案したのは「リーダー」で、タカクラはこの「生前葬」に向けて、クラブの歴史をまとめた年表づくりを担当することになったのですが……。

　Takakura, the main character who lives in Canada, is going over chronological table of “Gorin Club” again. Gorin Club started with 4 members who lived in the same housing complex. They just played around together at first, but the bonds between them grew much stronger through various events. The reason that Takakura comes back to Japan this time is to have a living funeral for “Gorin Club”. The one who proposed to do that was “leader”, and Takakura was assigned to make the chronological table of the club for the living funeral…….  

　主人公の回想の中で、少年時代、青春時代、そしてカナダに移住するいきさつを含めたエピソードが、淡々と、しかし陰影豊かに浮き彫りになっていきます。

　著者自身が現在、カナダにお住まいとのこと。一種の自伝といった面もあるのかもしれません。よい読後感を味わうことができました。

　Many kinds of episodes in Takakura’s childhood, in his youth, and the reason why he moved to Canada were told calmly, but in a way full of contrast and variety.

　The author himself lives in Canada now. This story may be a kind of his autobiography.  I finished this book savoring something lingering there.

ラーメンうまし②：家系ラーメン「大桜」 Ramen tastes good②: Ie Kei Ramen Shop “Ozakura”

　関東でもう一つ、食べたいラーメンがありました。いわゆる「家系」ラーメンです。家系が何かもよくわからないまま、とにかく食べてみたいと思っていました。

　There was another type of ramen I wanted to eat in the Kanto region. It is a sort of ramen called “iekei” ramen. Actually, I didn’t even know the meaning of it but I just wanted to eat the ramen.

　ラーメン二郎で赤っ恥をかいた次の日のお昼、勝手にリベンジ気分で、家系ラーメンを食べに出かけました。友人宅から歩いて行ける場所にあったその店は「大桜」というお店でした。

　On the day after I made a bad showing of myself at Ramen Jiro, I went out to eat the ie kei ramen as if I were carrying out revenge. The ramen shop, which was within walking distance of my friend’s place, was “Ozakura”.

　行列はなく、意気揚々と乗りこんだ店内は広くて、席はほどよく埋まっていました。カウンターに着いて、「たまごラーメン」を頼みました。

　There was no line up and we entered the ramen shop in high spirits. It was almost packed. We sat at the counter and then ordered “Tamago ramen”.

　家系ラーメンのスープは、醤油豚骨とのこと。一口すすると、コクはあるのにあっさりした、すっと体にしみこむような味わいです。美味しいです。薄めのチャーシューは食感がよく、ほどよい味付けがなされています。驚いたのは、家系ラーメンのもう一つの特徴、ほうれん草とノリの仕事ぶりです。単調になりがちな味に緩急をつけて飽きさせません。夢中で麺を掻き込み、久しぶりにスープを飲み干してしまいました。こののど越しのよさはなんでしょう。魚介の出汁も入っているのでは、と素人なりに勘繰りました。

　I heard that the soup of iekei ramen is a kind of shoyu tonkotsu (soy sauce and pork bone soup). With the mouthful of soup, I found it tasty but also mild, so it seemed to naturally permeate my body. Yummy. The well-seasoned roast pork was sliced rather thinly, and the texture was so nice. What I was surprised at was the fact that spinach and nori, typical ingredients of iekei. went so well together. They added variety to the taste which tends to be monotonous. I was absorbed in eating and ended up emptying the bowl. How smoothly the soup went down. I’m not sure but I guess that they use fish and shellfish in the soup.

　Wikiによると、家系と呼ばれる理由は、発祥とされるお店が「吉村家」という店名で、それ以降も「～家」という店が多かったからとのことです。

　According to Wikipedia, the reason why this type of ramen is called iekei is as follows. That’s because the first ramen shop was named “Yoshimura Ya” and the many others that followed were also named “〇〇 Ya”.

　先日、関東に行く機会がありました。食べてみたいラーメンがあったので、機会を逃さず試してみました。いわゆる二郎系ラーメンです。テレビやSNSでその映像を見かけるたびに、食べたい気持ちは募っていきました。長崎にもあるとは聞きましたが、まだ店舗は少ないようです。

　I went to the Kanto region the other day. There was a type of ramen I’d been wanting to eat so I gave it a try. It was a kind of ramen called Jiro. The more I saw that ramen on TV or SNS, the more I wanted to give it a try. I heard that there are a few ramen shops that serve this sort of ramen in Nagasaki.

　お昼に友人が連れて行ってくれたのは、ずばり「ラーメン二郎」でした。案の定、行列ができています。はやる気持ちを抑えつつ、20分ほど待って店内に入り、券売機で思わず「大」を押してしまいました。店内で一斉に札を挙げて見せたとき、自分と友人以外、皆さん「小」の札だったのでたじろぎました。店員さんから「多いですけど、大丈夫ですか？」と念を押されましたが、赤面しつつ「大丈夫です」と言ってしまいました。そのあと、「えっ？小であれなの？」と実物を見て圧倒されました。もう観念するしかありません。

　The ramen shop where my friend took me was “Ramen Jiro”, the original shop. There was a line up in front of the shop as I had thought there would be. Trying to slow myself down, I patiently waited for 20 minutes. Then I finally entered the shop and pushed the “Large” button on the ticket machine in spite of myself. After that, one of the employees asked us to show our tickets, so we did, and I shrank back when I found that all the customers excep my friend and I had chosen “small”. The employee said, “It’s definitely large. Are you all right?”. I said, “OK”, feeling myself blushing. “Huh? Is that small?”, I was overwhelmed when I saw what the “small” portion was like. I had no choice but to resign myself to the situation.

　「ニンニク野菜マシマシ、油多めで！」、勢いよくコールをかける他のお客さんを尻目に「ニンニクマシで」とだけトッピングを頼みました。「大」の量がどんなものか恐ろしくて、憧れの「野菜マシマシ」が言えない自分が情けないばかりです。出てきた「大」は案の定な量でした。

　“With a triple portion of Nin-niku (garlic) and Yasai (vegetables)!” somebody said that out loud, but I just said, “Just Garlic, double”. I was ashamed of myself because I couldn’t say what I really wanted to, “A triple portion of Yasai!”, being afraid of what the “large” portion would be like. The amount of the “Large” portion was, in fact, as large as I thought it would be.

　一口、スープを飲んでその美味しさに笑顔になりました。肉厚で柔らかいチャーシューも好みでした。極太の麺はよくスープと絡みます。夢中になって食べ始めました。しかし、恐れていた通り、半分食べたところでもう苦しくなりました。なんとか頑張ってみましたが、結局は食べきれず、「すみません」とだけ言い、逃げるように外に出てしまいました。その後、ちゃんと最後まで食べた友人が悠々と出てくる姿が眩しく見えました。

　A mouthful of soup made me smile with the tastiness. Thick but soft roast pork was my favorite, too. The extremely thick noodles hold the soup well. I dug into it. However, I felt that I was already full when I finished only the first half of it as I had been afraid so. I tried more but I couldn’t eat another bite. I ended up leaving the ramen shop in a hurry just saying, “I'm sorry”. I somehow felt dazzled when I saw my friend finished hi ramen and came out of the shop in a leisurely way.   

　次に行くとしたら、迷わず「小」にします。そして今、一番口にしたい美しい日本語、「ニンニク野菜マシマシで！」を言うつもりです。

　I’m going to push the “small” button without any hesitation next time. Then I’m going to say it out loud that the most beautiful expression for me to say now; “With a triple portion of garlic and vegetables!”.

捕虜収容所に見る戦争の非人間性③：ジェームズ・クラベル著「キングラット」を読んで The Inhumanity of Wars Which Can Be Seen through a POW Camp③: “KING RAT” by James Clavell

　題名のキングラットとは、キングが金儲けのために行った一つの試みに関係しています。彼は、ネズミを飼育して、その肉を売りさばこうとしていたのでした。それは、一匹の大きく、凶暴なネズミを捕らえたことをきっかけに始まりました。しかし、床下に設けられた飼育施設内に多くのネズミが残されたまま、終戦とともに計画は頓挫してしまいます。そして、はじめの一匹であるねずみ、キングラットが、金網を破り、自分の子らを食い散らしながら生き延びる様子が描かれてこの物語は終わります。金網の中に捕らえられたネズミたちの姿は、囚人たちの姿と重なります。凶暴なキングラットの姿は、囚人たちを食い物にし、自分だけが肥えていたキングの姿にも見えます。

　“KING RAT”, the title, has something to do with a thing that King was trying to do for making money. He tried to breed rats in order to sell their meat for food. He came up with the idea when he caught a big, ferocious male rat. However, the plan was aborted because of the end of the war leaving many rats in a breeding facility under the floor. This story ends with the scene where the first rat, called King Rat, broke the cage and survived eating his offspring. The rats in their cages remind readers of the prisoners. The ferocious King Rat is a small version of King, who exploited other prisoners to skim the cream just for himself.

　この物語の準主役と言っていいピーター・マーロウは、作者のジェームズ・クラベル自身を投影したものと言われています。実際に捕虜として3年間、チャンギの収容所を体験した人物による作品だからこそ、物語の設定には信ぴょう性があります。キングに対し、全員が背を向ける中、ピーターだけはキングのことを友として最後まで慕い続けるのでした。塀の中では異様に感じる彼の姿は、実際には現実にあるべき人の姿であることは間違いありません。狂気に抗い、正気を保ち続けたのはキングだけであり、ピーターにとって、彼はやはり自由の象徴なのでした。

　It is often said that Peter Marlowe, who can be called a key supporting role, is based upon Clavell’s younger self. He was, in fact, prisoned in the Changi prison camp for three years so the settings of this story are authentic. Peter continued to be friends with King even when others turned the cold shoulder on King. It is true that what he had looked like, even if it had looked insane in the prison, is what a person should be like in a ordinary life,  He was the only person who fought against insanity and stay sane, and that’s why King is the symbol of freedom for Peter.

チャンギ国際空港

　現在、シンガポールのチャンギと言えば、世界で最も高い評価を受けている国際空港があることで知られています。この平和な世界で、繁栄を謳歌しているこの場所で、過去にこんなことがあったことを想うと感慨深い気持ちになります。

　余談ですが、この物語は1965年に映画化されているようです。

　Speaking of Changi, it is now famous because of the international airport that is currently rated the world’s best airport for these years. When I consider this thriving place, in such a peace world, is a place which has such a terrible history, something stirs deep inside me.

　By the way, there seems to be a movie version of this novel released in 1965.

捕虜収容所に見る戦争の非人間性②：ジェームズ・クラベル著「キングラット」を読んで The Inhumanity of Wars Which Can Be Seen through a POW Camp②: “KING RAT” by James Clavell

　収容所の中で思い通りに振る舞ってきたキング。人心を操るのも上手く、彼がくれる卵１個、たばこ１本のために、彼に取り入る人間も多いのでした。不自由な収容所の中で、できる限りの自由を手に入れようとするキングの姿が痛快に思えて、この物語の主役は疑いもなく彼であると、読者は思い込まされます。

　King has done whatever he wants to. He is good at winning the hearts of the people and there are some people who curry favor with him for an egg, or a cigarette. The behavior of the King, who tries to be free as much as possible in a difficult life in the prison, is exhilarating so readers take it that he is the protagonist of this story.

　しかし、全320ページのこの本が、残り３０ページとなったところで、状況は一変します。ついに終戦の報が収容所にも届くのですが、それは、キングのそれまでの人物像が打ち砕かれる瞬間でもあったのです。それまで、彼に向けられていた尊敬は軽蔑に変わり、羨望の眼差しは、怒りをあらわにしたものとなるのでした。ここで読者はようやく収容所のありのままの姿を思い知らされます。それは、衣食に事欠き、不潔この上なく、悪臭に満ち、病気が蔓延して死が日常と化した忌まわしい世界です。その中でただ一人、身ぎれいに健康で過ごしているキングの姿はもはや異様にしか感じられません。収容所の引き渡しのために訪れた最初の人物、フォーサイス大佐は、キングの様子に即座に不信を抱き、彼の罪を暴いて断罪すると宣言するのでした。

　However, the situation totally changes when you have only 30 pages left of this 320-page book. The news that the war is over finally reaches the camp, and from that moment on, the image of King begins to be destroyed. The respect for him gives way to contempt, and the envy toward him gives way to anger. Then you finally realize what the camp has been like, after all this time. It has been a formidable world which is always short of food and clothes, extremely filthy, disgustingly stinking, disease-infested and causing many deaths. King, who is solely neat and fit in such a place, just seems to be weird. Captain Forsyth, the first person who comes to take over the camp, has a suspicion of King and states that he will expose King’s guilt and condemn him as soon as he meets King.

　収容所は、その存在自体が狂気です。その中で権勢を誇っていたキングは、まさに狂気の体現であったと読者は知らされます。そして、このような劣悪な環境を放置していること自体が、戦争捕虜への最大の虐待であり、管理者である日本軍の罪は深いと言えます。捕虜の解放のために、その後訪れる軍人たち、そして取材のために同行した記者たちの目に映る囚人らの姿は、もはや理解を超えたものでした。彼らの視線には、憐れみよりも遠慮のない好奇心、さらには侮蔑の気持ちさえこもっており、それは囚人たちにとって、一層過酷で、理不尽な苦しみとなるのでした。戦争の生み出す悲惨は、底が知れません。次回、この作品のタイトル、「キングラット」にふれて、レビューを終わります。

　A POW camp is simply insane. King, who is the most powerful guy in the camp, is the embodiment of the insanity. Such appalling conditions is the most significant cruelty to the prisoners so the Japanese army is deeply sinful.

　What the prisoners are like is beyond human, the officers and the soldiers and the journalists who comes to liberate prisoners think. They stare at the prisoners with sheer curiosity, contempt, rather than pity, and it makes prisoners feel harshly and irrationally tormented. The misery caused by wars is unlimited. I’d like to mention the title, “KING RAT”, to finish this review next time.

捕虜収容所に見る戦争の非人間性：ジェームズ・クラベル著「キング・ラット」を読んで The Inhumanity of Wars Which Can Be Seen through a POW Camp: “KING RAT” by James Clavell

　日本兵による、捕虜虐待のシーンなど、全く描かれていません。そもそも日本兵自体がほぼ登場しません。日本軍の戦争捕虜収容所を舞台にしたこのお話が告発しているのは、戦争そのものの非人間性だと感じています。以前、紹介した本「キングラット」をようやく読み終わったので、感じたことを述べてみます。

　The ill-treatment of prisoners of war by Japanese soldiers is not described there at all. Japanese soldiers scarcely appear in the first place. This story which is set on a POW camp used by Japanese army accuses the inhumanity of wars. I finally finished the book called “KING RAT” which I mentioned before so I’d like to give my impressions of it now. 

　この物語の主人公は、一人の囚人、「キング」と呼ばれるアメリカ人です。食料品も衣類も欠乏しているはずの収容所で、キングだけはなぜか、きちんと身なりを整え、好きなだけたばこを吸い、血色のよさを保っています。軍隊の階級的には低い位置にいるはずのキングは、この収容所においてなぜか、文字通り「キング」としてふるまっていました。商魂たくましい彼は、看守や外部の中国人とつながりをもち、囚人たちの持ち物を売買して金銭を蓄えているのでした。キングはやがて、ピーター・マーロウというイギリス人捕虜に近づきます。マレー語を自在に話す彼を、商談における通訳として利用するためでした。ある晩、キングとピーターは、商談のために近くの村へと夜中に抜け出します。その折に、ラジオの部品を手に入れたピーターは、同じ小屋の仲間と協力してラジオを完成し、戦況の把握に努めるのでした。そうしてついに、戦争終結の日が訪れるのですが……。

　The main character is a prisoner called “King” from America. He is well dressed, always smoking, and in good shape despite lack of food and clothes in the prison. His military rank is rather low, but he behaves as if he is the King there literarily. Being highly business-minded, he has connections with some guards and Chinese outside to trade goods originally possessed by prisoners, so he saves a lot of money. One day, the King approaches an English prisoner called Peter Marlowe. That’s because Peter can speak Malayan fluently, so he wants Peter to interpret for him in a business negotiation. Late one night, King and Peter sneak out of the camp to a nearby village for a negotiation. Peter gets some parts of radio there and he makes a radio in cooperation with his room mates to know the war situation. Then, the day has finally come when the war is over…….  

　こうしてあらすじを紹介してみると、収容所を舞台にした、痛快なサクセスストーリーのように思えます。しかし、その認識は、物語の終盤で見事に覆されます。戦争というもののどうしようもない悲惨さ、非人間性を息苦しいほどに感じて、最後のページを閉じました。

　アメリカでは、日本軍による捕虜収容所の実態を知らしめたとして、この本は有名で、広く読まれているとのこと。日本語版を捜してみましたが、現在はないようです。ネタバレなど気にせず、このお話の主題について、次回は掘り下げてみます。

　With this summary, this book seems like an exhilarating success story which is set in a POW camp. However, that recognition is overturned at the end of the story. I finished this book realizing the inevitable misery and the inhumanity of wars.

　This book is well known and widely read in America as a book that revealed what the Japanese POW camp was like. I tried to find a Japanese version, but I couldn’t. I’d like to talk about the theme of this story next time without caring about spoiling.

猫愛があふれる映画：「ボブという名の猫 幸せのハイタッチ」（2016年 イギリス）A Movie Full of Affection for Cats: A Street Cat Named Bob(2016, UK)

　タイトルだけ見たとき、B級では、と身構えました。しかし、星の数で４という評価を信じ、思い切って視聴してみました。

　I went on full alert as soon as I saw the title of the movie because it seemed like a B-grade film. But I believed what this movie had a 4 star review, so I took a chance and started to watch it.

　アマゾンプライムビデオでの紹介文は、次のようになっています。

　「ロンドンでプロのミュージシャンを目指すが夢破れ、ホームレスとなった青年ジェームズ。薬物中毒から抜けだせずどん底の生活を送っていた彼のもとにある日、一匹の野良猫が迷いこむ。ケガをしたその猫（ボブと命名）を、有り金をはたいて助けて以来、ふたりはどこへ行くにも一緒、次第にその動向が世間の注目を集めるようになる。しかし、彼らの前に次々と試練と困難が立ちはだかり……。」

　The summary I read on Amazon Prime Video was as follows.

　“James, who had aimed to be a musician in London, is now a young homeless. He has been a heroin addict and led a miserable life. One day, a stray cat comes into his place. The next day, James finds the same cat has gotten a wound on its back leg, so he saves the cat spending all the money he has. From then on, James and Bob, which is the name James gave to the cat, go everywhere together. They begin to attract public attention gradually. However, they have to go through trials and tribulations one after another….”  

「ボブという名の猫 幸せのハイタッチ」予告編

　映画の冒頭で、「実話に基づく物語」というテロップが出てちょっと驚きました。この映画は同名の本をもとに製作されたものだそうです。2013年に出版されたこの本は、イギリスでベストセラーになったとのこと。

　取り立てて大騒ぎするような感動作ではありません。でも、猫の助けを借りながら、人生を取り戻そうとする主人公を自然と応援したくなる映画でした。

　映画が終わって調べてみて、もっと驚きました。映画に出てくる猫、ボブはなんと本人（本猫？）とのこと。助演猫優賞ものの演技でした。

　At the top of the movie, I saw subtitles which says, “Based on a true story”. This movie is based on the book of the same name. This book, which was published in 2013, became a best-seller in the UK.

　It is not that this movie is something special. However, it made me feel like cheering up the main character who tries to get his life back on track with the help of Bob, in spite of myself.

　I wanted to know about this movie after I finished to watch so I checked it out on the internet. What surprised me even more was the fact that the real Bob played the part of Bob in this movie. This cat deserves Academy Award for Best Supporting A-cat-or.
