収容所の中で思い通りに振る舞ってきたキング。人心を操るのも上手く、彼がくれる卵１個、たばこ１本のために、彼に取り入る人間も多いのでした。不自由な収容所の中で、できる限りの自由を手に入れようとするキングの姿が痛快に思えて、この物語の主役は疑いもなく彼であると、読者は思い込まされます。
King has done whatever he wants to. He is good at winning the hearts of the people and there are some people who curry favor with him for an egg, or a cigarette. The behavior of the King, who tries to be free as much as possible in a difficult life in the prison, is exhilarating so readers take it that he is the protagonist of this story.
しかし、全320ページのこの本が、残り３０ページとなったところで、状況は一変します。ついに終戦の報が収容所にも届くのですが、それは、キングのそれまでの人物像が打ち砕かれる瞬間でもあったのです。それまで、彼に向けられていた尊敬は軽蔑に変わり、羨望の眼差しは、怒りをあらわにしたものとなるのでした。ここで読者はようやく収容所のありのままの姿を思い知らされます。それは、衣食に事欠き、不潔この上なく、悪臭に満ち、病気が蔓延して死が日常と化した忌まわしい世界です。その中でただ一人、身ぎれいに健康で過ごしているキングの姿はもはや異様にしか感じられません。収容所の引き渡しのために訪れた最初の人物、フォーサイス大佐は、キングの様子に即座に不信を抱き、彼の罪を暴いて断罪すると宣言するのでした。
However, the situation totally changes when you have only 30 pages left of this 320-page book. The news that the war is over finally reaches the camp, and from that moment on, the image of King begins to be destroyed. The respect for him gives way to contempt, and the envy toward him gives way to anger. Then you finally realize what the camp has been like, after all this time. It has been a formidable world which is always short of food and clothes, extremely filthy, disgustingly stinking, disease-infested and causing many deaths. King, who is solely neat and fit in such a place, just seems to be weird. Captain Forsyth, the first person who comes to take over the camp, has a suspicion of King and states that he will expose King’s guilt and condemn him as soon as he meets King.
収容所は、その存在自体が狂気です。その中で権勢を誇っていたキングは、まさに狂気の体現であったと読者は知らされます。そして、このような劣悪な環境を放置していること自体が、戦争捕虜への最大の虐待であり、管理者である日本軍の罪は深いと言えます。捕虜の解放のために、その後訪れる軍人たち、そして取材のために同行した記者たちの目に映る囚人らの姿は、もはや理解を超えたものでした。彼らの視線には、憐れみよりも遠慮のない好奇心、さらには侮蔑の気持ちさえこもっており、それは囚人たちにとって、一層過酷で、理不尽な苦しみとなるのでした。戦争の生み出す悲惨は、底が知れません。次回、この作品のタイトル、「キングラット」にふれて、レビューを終わります。
A POW camp is simply insane. King, who is the most powerful guy in the camp, is the embodiment of the insanity. Such appalling conditions is the most significant cruelty to the prisoners so the Japanese army is deeply sinful.
What the prisoners are like is beyond human, the officers and the soldiers and the journalists who comes to liberate prisoners think. They stare at the prisoners with sheer curiosity, contempt, rather than pity, and it makes prisoners feel harshly and irrationally tormented. The misery caused by wars is unlimited. I’d like to mention the title, “KING RAT”, to finish this review next time.
