韓国ドラマの凄さを思い知りました。とてつもなく面白い、だけでは済みません。日本人として、改めて隣国との歴史を見つめ直すきっかけを与えてくれる作品です。
I deeply realized how great Korean dramas are. It's not only extremely enjoyable. It even gave me an opportunity to think over the history between Japan and the neighbor country.

一つのラブストーリーとして、楽しめるドラマであることは確かです。でも、さらに興味を掻き立てるのは、土台となる設定や時代背景です。このドラマを通じて、いわゆる日本による韓国併合に至るまでの経緯を、おぼろげですがようやく理解できたように思います。
You can enjoy this drama as a love story for sure. But there's more about it and it is the settings or the historical background. I vaguely come to understand how Japan annexed Korea through this drama.
ことさらに反日感情を煽るような作品では、と身構える方もいるでしょう。確かに日本の軍人と政治家の横暴さ、理不尽さがどんなものかを全編にわたって描いています。犯罪者じみた兵卒による残虐行為の場面もあります。
Some people may think this is a sort of drama that incite anti-Japanese sentiment. It surely depicts how arrogant and irrational Japanese military people or politicians were. There also are scenes where soldiers who are almost criminals behave brutally.
しかし、そこに誇張はないように思います。むしろあの程度では済まなかったのではとさえ感じます。そもそも一つの国を併合するという発想自体の残酷さは、どんな言い訳をしても正当化できるわけがありません。
However, there seems to be no exaggeration there. I rather feel they might have been more cruel. In the first place, the idea of annexation cannot be justified in any way.
当時の朝鮮自体が抱えていた問題をしっかりと描き出しているところにも、制作側の客観的な姿勢がうかがえます。政治体制の脆弱さ、過酷な身分制度の理不尽さ、市民の中にさえ、私利私欲から日本側に与する者がいたことを淡々と伝えています。こうした設定を背景に描かれるこの物語は、スケールの大きさ、そして、登場人物の魅力といった点でも見ごたえのあるドラマです。

Some problems Korea itself had back then were also described very well, so I can tell that they tried to be quite objective. This drama shows the unstable political system, the severe, irrational hierarchy system, and even some ordinary people who betrayed their own country following self-interest. Those settings made this drama spectacular, plus the characters that appear in it were also attractive, so I highly recommend it. To be continued.
