This Drama Itself Is A Miracle, Isn’t It?: My impression of a drama called ‘Stepmother and daughter’s blues’

I finally felt a sense of satisfaction after two years. My curiosity which had been aroused by the broadcast at the beginning of 2020 was finally satisfied. I can say that it was even better than I expected it would be.

The background to the story from the official website is as follows.

“At the dawn of the New Year, a company called Goldic, which has been reconstructed by Akiko, the stepmother, is taken over by a foreign fund. The new owner of Goldic is the manager of the fund. They are a so-called vulture fund which buys companies at low prices and sells their stocks and assets at high prices to make a lot of money. However, Akiko, who should take revenge for Goldic, is lost for words when she meets the guy because……”

There is nothing strange about her being lost for words. That’s because Ryoji Iwaki, the manager of the foreign fund, looks like Akiko’s late husband called Ryoichi. Although they look alike, their characters are totally different. Iwaki is a shrewd guy who will do anything to get what he wants, whereas Ryoichi was a calm, good-natured guy. Iwaki even tries to take over Bakery Mugita, which has grouwn rapidly thanks to Akiko’s efficiency. Akiko makes great efforts to protect Bakery Mugita, but she cannot do it well, it’s unlike her though, because she can’t help trying to look for something similar to Ryoichi in Iwaki’s character.

Each actor performed so well as ever. I was particularly impressed with the character called Akira Mugita, who is the owner of Bakery Mugita, because he is extremely stupid, even irritatingly so, but he eventually makes this drama have a wide emotional range so I cried and also laughed a lot. Even though Takeru Sato, the actor who played Mugita, is originally a cool, handsome guy, he didn’t show such nature at all in this drama so I realized how great he is as an actor even more. There was a phrase which Akiko said when she heard Mugita say something full of meaning, and what she said was, “I have a feeling that I saw the moment when a fool becomes a genius crossing over the slight difference between them”. I laughed out loud when I heard it.

This drama has featured a lot of tiny miracles and now I have a feeling that this drama itself is a miracle in the end. I even think that this drama might have become better than what the production staff intended. I was deeply impressed by the words, which Miyuki, Akiko’s daughter played by Mone Kamishiraishi, said at the end of this drama, and it was “Isn’t it a miracle that there was a sequel to that day?”. I feel the same way as Miyuki toward this drama because it came to an end with nothing ambiguous about any plots in it. This drama was so good that I feel like watching the sequel even further while knowing it has already ended.
