お勧めされて観ました。あまり期待せずに観始めたのに、すぐに体育座りになりました。新海誠監督のアニメーション映画「言の葉の庭」は、たった46分と短いけれど、とっても素敵な恋の物語です。アニメも恋愛ものも、そんなに好きじゃありません。そんな自分でもものすごくノレました。切なくて涙があふれました。

I watched this movie because a colleague recommended it to me. Actually, I didn’t have much expectation before watching it, but once I started to do so I soon sat up and concentrated on it just after a few minutes. The animation movie called ‘The Garden of Words’, written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, is such a short movie, only 46 minutes long, but is really a fantastic love story. Even though I originally don’t like animation or love stories so much, I was really into it. I was even moved to tears.

「靴職人を目指す高校生・タカオは、雨の朝は決まって学校をさぼり、公園の日本庭園で靴のスケッチを描いていた。ある日、タカオは、ひとり缶ビールを飲む謎めいた年上の女性・ユキノと出会う。ふたりは約束もないまま雨の日だけの逢瀬を重ねるようになり、次第に心を通わせていく。居場所を見失ってしまったというユキノに、彼女がもっと歩きたくなるような靴を作りたいと願うタカオ。六月の空のように物憂げに揺れ動く、互いの思いをよそに梅雨は明けようとしていた。」
"A high school student called Takao, who wants to be a shoemaker, always skips morning classes whenever it rains to design shoes in a Japanese-style garden. One day, Takao meets a lady named Yukino, who is older than him. They continue to meet only on rainy mornings without any appointments and were gradually attracted to each other. Yukino says she lost something that she used to belong to , and Takao comes to think that he wants to make a pair of shoes for her to make her feel like moving forward positlvely. The rainy season is about to come to an end leaving them wavering about their feelings like the sky in June."
まずは、映像の美しさに圧倒されます。このクオリティはどうでしょう。日本人として勝手に誇らしくなります。そしてこの作品は、随所に日本的な要素が盛り込まれています。まず、梅雨という季節。そして、日本庭園。さらには、万葉集。そんな設定の上で織りなされる2人の恋は、息苦しいほどに、繊細ではかないものです。
At first, you’ll be overwhelmed by the beautiful images. The image quality is so high. Somehow I feel proud of being Japanese. This movie is full of things that are typically Japanese. First, the rainy season in June. Second, the Japanese-style garden. And finally, Man’yoshu, a Japanese poetry collection. The love story of the two, which is woven on those settings, is suffocatingly sensitive and transient.
この作品は2013年の5月に公開されています。新海誠監督の作品としては、「君の名は」の前作にあたるようです。こんな素晴らしい作品を今まで知らなかった自分が残念でなりません。「君の名は」も数年たって視聴して、あまりの素晴らしさに、やかましく騒ぎ立てて周りからひんしゅくを買いました。ストーリーも設定も、何もかも違う２つの作品ですが、同じ感動があるように思います。新海誠監督の最新作「すずめの戸締まり」が11月11日に公開されるようです。今度こそ劇場で観たいと思います。
This movie was released in May 2013. This is the one produced before ‘Your Name’ as a work directed by Makot Shinkai. I wonder why I hadn’t known such a great anime for a long time. As for ‘Your Name’, I watched it several years after its release and was deeply moved, so I made a big fuss about it and ended up raising more than a few eyebrows. Those two works have totally different stories and settings, but I have a feeling that they have the same vibes somehow. Shinkai’s latest work called ‘Suzume no Tojimari’ will be released on November 11th. I’m going to watch it in a theater this time for sure.
