宮崎駿監督の映画で一番好きな作品です。錚々たるジブリ作品に比べると、ストーリーが単純で、芸術性に乏しく、革新性もあまり無いのかもしれません。それなのに、こんなにも愛おしく思えるのはなぜでしょう。一つには娯楽作品としてのクオリティの高さだと思います。でも、それ以上に感じるのは、1979年という、昭和における一つの節目への郷愁です。
This is my favorite among the films directed by Miyazaki Hayao. Compared to the Ghibli works, its story may be quite simple, not so artistic nor innovative. Even so I love this movie for some reason. There are some possible reasons and the first one I can come up with is its highly entertaining quality. Plus there’s one more reason which might be more important and that is the nostalgia for the year, 1979, which seems to be , in my opinion, a turning point in the Showa era.

このお話を一言で言えば、窮地に陥った姫の救出劇です。冒険活劇としてはありがちなこのプロットがここで成功している理由としてまず挙げたいのは、魅力的な設定です。舞台はヨーロッパの小公国、ヒロインは凋落した王家の最後の一人となった姫、悪役には傲岸極まりなく奸智に長けた伯爵、そしてヒーローは弱気を助け強気を挫く怪盗と、もう設定だけでワクワクしてしまいます。そのうえで物語の面白さを加速しているのが、登場人物一人一人の際立ったキャラ、ハラハラドキドキするカーチェイス、壮大な陰謀、知りたい謎、腑に落ちる結末、そして数々の名台詞といった様々な要素です。お話の最後における、銭形警部とクラリスの以下のやりとりには、涙がこぼれます。
To put it briefly, this is a story about a damsel in distress. The reason why such a stereotyped plot for an adventure story made this movie successful is the fabulous settings. The settings of the story like a small dukedom in Europe, the heroine as a princess who is a only survivor of a collapsed kingdom, the villain as an arrogant, cunning count, and the hero as a chivalrous thief are so exhilarating. On top of that, there are various elements that make the story more enjoyable, for example, well-portrayed characters, exciting car chases, big conspiracy theories, interesting mysteries, a convincing ending, and a lot of famous lines. The following conversation between chief inspector Zenigata and the heroine called Clarisse which they have at the end of the movie always makes me cry.
銭形警部：「くそー、一足遅かったかぁ！ルパンめ、まんまと盗みおって」
Zenigata:“Darn it! I just missed him. How dare Lupin steal successfully”
クラリス：「いいえ、あの方は何も盗らなかったわ。私の為に戦ってくれたのです」
Clarisse: “No, he stole nothing. He just fought for me”
銭形警部：「いや、奴はとんでもないものを盗んでいきました。…あなたの心です。」
Zenigatta: “Actually, he did. He has stolen something precious. …It’s your heart”
クラリス：「…はい！」
Clarisse: “…Yes!”
さて、1979年です。これはあくまで主観的な個人の意見ですが、この年を境に何かが変わったように思います。それは、戦後意識の希薄化ではないかと勝手に思っています。当時まだ幼かった自分ですが、それまでの日本も日本人もとにかくダサいと子ども心に思っていたのを覚えています。敗戦から立ち上がってきたそれまでの日本人は、ただもうなりふり構わず、遮二無二生きていたに違いありません。その反動が始まったのがこの年だったのではないでしょうか。1979年の末に公開されたこの映画には、そのことを象徴するような、新しい時代を予感させるような何かがあるように感じています。

What has changed was, I suppose, the postwar period has almost ended this year in people's minds. I was a little boy at that time, but I already had a feeling that Japan and Japanese people were not sophisticated. Japanese people had been struggling to rise from the ashes of defeat until then. The rebound from that long period might have started this year. I have a feeling that this movie, which was released at the end of 1979, symbolized that and felt like the dawning of a new era.
