尻上がりの面白さ:NHK大河ドラマ「鎌倉殿の13人」 It’s Becoming Even More Enjoyable than Before: ‘The 13 Lords of The Shogun’, NHK’s annual year-long historical drama.

 ここ数年の大河ドラマ、始めはよくても尻すぼみなものが多かったように思うのは自分だけでしょうか。しかし、今年の大河「鎌倉殿の13人」については、出だしからとても惹き込まれた上に、回を重ねるごとに面白さが増しているように思います。自分の中では、これまでの大河で最高傑作と、もう勝手に決めつけてしまいました。

 I’m wondering if I am the only person who has a feeling that NHK’s Taiga Dramas have been anticlimactic these past years. However, as for this year’s drama called ‘The 13 Lords of The Shogun’, I was perfectly hooked on it by its first episode, and the more I watched it, the more I have been into it. I’m sure this is the best Taiga I’ve ever watched. The following is a summary I cited from its official website.

「平家隆盛の世、北条義時は伊豆の弱小豪族の次男坊に過ぎなかった。だが流罪人・源頼朝と姉・政子の結婚をきっかけに、運命の歯車は回り始める。

1180年、頼朝は関東武士団を結集し平家に反旗を翻した。北条一門はこの無謀な博打に乗った。頼朝第一の側近となった義時は決死の政治工作を行い、遂には平家一門を打ち破る。

幕府を開き将軍となった頼朝。だがその絶頂のとき、彼は謎の死を遂げた。偉大な父を超えようともがき苦しむ二代将軍・頼家。“飾り”に徹して命をつなごうとする三代将軍・実朝。将軍の首は義時と御家人たちの間のパワーゲームの中で挿げ替えられていく。

義時は、二人の将軍の叔父として懸命に幕府の舵を取る。源氏の正統が途絶えたとき、北条氏は幕府の頂点にいた。都では後鳥羽上皇が義時討伐の兵を挙げる。武家政権の命運を賭け、義時は最後の決戦に挑んだ──。」

“In the era of the Taira’s prosperity, Yoshitoki Hojo was the second son of a minor lord in Izu. However, the marriage between Yoritomo Minamoto, an exile, and Masako, Yoshitoki’s sister, totally changed his fate.

In 1180, Yoritomo revolted against the Taira with the help of lords in Kanto region. It was a reckless gamble, but the Hojo took chances. Yohitoki, who became the closest aide to Yoritomo, carried out some political maneuvers desperately, and finally dethroned the Taira.

Yoritomo became shogun and started his shogunate government. However, He died a mysterious death in his prime. The second shogun called Yoriie struggled to outdo his great father. The third called Sanetomo tried to survive as a figurehead shogun. Shogun changed one after another in the power game between Yoshitoki and other lords.

Yoshitoki, who was an ancle of the two shogun, tried to manage their shogunate. When all the sons of Yoritomo died, the Hojo was at the top of the Shogunate. In Kyoto, the capital city of Japan at that time, Gotoba Joko, the Emperor Emeritus, started a war against Yoshitoki. Yoshitoki responded decisively in order to protect his military government.”

 日本で最初の武家政権がどう描かれるのか、少しでも歴史に興味がある人なら心惹かれることでしょう。これまでのストーリーを振り返ると、源平合戦における義経の活躍と悲愴な最後、平家を倒して後の頼朝の猜疑心と不安、さらには頼朝が亡くなって後の御家人間での争いなど、全てがこちらの期待以上に上手く描かれています。最近の大河にありがちだった、長尺の再現ドラマ感は微塵もありません。事実の羅列ではなく、数多くの登場人物の心情に至るまで、ちゃんと共感できる形で描かれているのです。

 It is quite interesting for somebody who is interested in history even a little to know how they depict the first samurai government in Japan in this drama. looking back on the episodes broadcast up until now, they successfully described every part like how active Yoshitsune, a younger brother of Yoritomo, was in the fight against the Taira and his tragic death, Yoritomo’s suspicions and uneasiness after defeating the Taira, How chaotic internal feuds were after the death of Yoritomo and so on, even better than I had expected. I don’t feel any sense of watching just a reenactment, which I had been feeling towards Taiga Dramas these years, this time at all. This drama is totally different from a mere statement of facts, and you can deeply empathize with the characters’ feelings.    

 なぜ、こんなに感情移入できるのでしょう。それは、必要以上に大袈裟なBGMがないことが大きな要因だと思います。「いいですか、ここは悲しい場面ですよ」とわざわざ耳元でがなり立てるような、おせっかいでエモーショナルな音楽は必要最低限にしか使われていません。本当に悲しい場面ではむしろ無音だったりします。三谷幸喜さんは、視聴者を信じてくれているのです。三谷幸喜さんの初期の作品、「王様のレストラン」は本当に素晴らしいドラマでした。洒脱な雰囲気とユーモアにあふれたあのドラマは、今でも数年おきに見直しています。「鎌倉殿の13人」で改めて、そんな三谷幸喜さんの素晴らしい才能を見せつけられました。

 I wonder why I can empathize so much. That’s because, in my opinion, there is no exaggerating background music at all. They don’t use any kind of annoying, unnecessarily emotional music that sounds, ‘Tell you what. Here comes a moving scene, are you ready?’ or something like that, and if they do, they limit it to a bare minimum. At some saddest scenes, they tend to keep it silent. I have a feeling that Koki Mitani, the scenario writer, trusts the audience. I remember that one of his early works called ‘King’s Restaurant’ was a masterpiece. I sometimes rewatch it every several years even now because I love its atmosphere which is full of wit and humor. This time I realized how he is talented again through watching ‘The 13 Lords of The Shogun’.
