前作「RAY OF HOPE」（2011）から11年ぶりのオリジナルアルバムです。この夏、友人が贈ってくれた2枚のアルバムの1枚がこれでした。サブスクでは聴くことができない山下達郎さんのCDを手にすることは、やっぱり特別な喜びがあります。CDブックレットの表紙は、穏やかにほほ笑む山下達郎さんの肖像画です。この肖像画、およびブックレット内の随所に見られる洒脱なイラストは、漫画「テルマエ・ロマエ」の作者ヤマザキマリさんによるものだそうです。持っていることがますます嬉しくなります。
収録曲は以下の通りです。
This is the album he released for the first time in 11 years since his previous one called ‘Ray of Hope’(2011). One of my best friends gave me two albums for my birthday this summer, and this album was one of them. Songs by Tatsuro Yamashita are not available on any music apps so it is a great pleasure to own his CD. The cover of the CD booklet features a portrait of him smiling softly. That portrait and some illustrations in the booklet are drawn by a cartoonist called Mari Yamazaki, who is the author of ‘Thermae Romae’, a famous manga in Japan. That makes it more delightful to obtain this CD.

この15曲中、12曲は映画やドラマ、CMのテーマソングだったとのこと。自分はあまり耳にしていない曲ばかりだったので、新鮮な気持ちで楽しめました。1曲目、音が鳴った瞬間に、もう連れていかれます。言わずもがなですが、1曲もハズレなしです。この数週間、このアルバムばかり聴いています。1番好きな曲を上げろと言われれば、「うたのきしゃ」でしょうか。映画「未来のミライ」のエンディングテーマとのことですが、ソウルフルなサウンドとキャッチーなメロディーがたまりません。
Twelve tracks out of these fifteen are written as theme songs for movies, dramas, and TV commercials. I didn’t know most of them so I enjoyed them as new songs. I was carried away the instant I heard the first few bars of the first track. It goes without saying that there is no dull song. I’ve been listening to only this album for a few weeks. If I had to choose a track as my favorite, I would say ‘Uta no Kisha’. This song was the ending theme song for a movie called ‘Mirai no Mirai’, and it is so soulful and full of catchy melodies.
ちょっと聴き比べたくなって、久しぶりに、山下達郎さんのファーストソロアルバム「CIRCUS TOWN」（1976）を聴いてみました。声は確かに若いです。サウンドも軽快に響きます。でも、山下達郎さんらしさというものは、何にも変わっていません。この「CIRCUS TOWN」と「SOFTLY」の間には46年という開きがあります。それなのに、収録曲をいくつか置き換えても違和感なく聴けるのではないか、とさえ思ってしまいます。時代が変わっても変わらない、いわゆる普遍的な何かがそこにあるのでしょう。
次回は、友人がくれたもう1枚のアルバムについてです。
I felt like listening to his first solo album called ‘CIRCUS TOWN’ (1976) to compare with the new one, and I did. I found his voice so young. All the tracks sound lilting. However, I realized the characteristics of Tatsuro Yamashita have never changed. There is a gap, 46 years, between ‘CIRCUS TOWN’ and ‘SOFTLY’. Nevertheless, I think it may not strange even if some tracks were switched around between the two albums. I’m sure that you can see something that never fades in his albums.
I will mention the other album that my friend gave me next time.
