タイトルからは陰惨なイメージしか浮かばないこのお話ですが、その大きなプロットの一つは、実はラブストーリーです。
Although I feel only something gloomy with the title of this book, but in fact one of the main plots of this story is a love story.
テナルディエ夫婦のもとからコゼットを救い出したジャン・バルジャンが向かった先は、パリのとある一角にある、ゴルボー屋敷と呼ばれる古びた一種の集合住宅でした。ここで数日、つかの間の安寧を得る２人でしたが、すぐにジャベールに嗅ぎつけられ、そこを出ることになります。袋小路に追い詰められるジャン・バルジャンは、囚人時代に身に着けた脱獄の技能を使い、壁をよじ登り、街灯のロープを使ってコゼットを引き上げ、塀の向こうの屋敷の庭に降り立ったのでした。そこは、ある女子修道院の敷地内でした。その後数年間、ジャン・バルジャンは庭師としてそこに住み、コゼットはそこで教育を受け、成長するのでした。
After saving Cosette from Thenardiers, Jean Valjean and she go to Paris and live in Gorbeau House, which is quite old, a sort of apartment house. They live happily there for a few days, but Javert finds them soon so they have to leave there. Jean Valjean is drove to the dead end of an alley and he resorts to the skills that he learned in jail to climb the wall and draws up Cosette with the rope for a streetlamp, then he finds himself in the yard of a house on the other side of the wall. They are on the premises of a convent. Jean Valjean ends up living there for several years as a gardener and Cosette becomes a student at the convent school.
数年後、２人が一時的に住んでいた例のゴルボー屋敷には、一人の大学生が住んでいました。大学生の名前はマリユス。もとは祖父ジルノルマン氏の家で暮らしていたのが、そこを飛び出してここに一人で暮らすことになったのでした。彼が大学で親しくしている友人たちは、「ABCの友」と呼ばれる、一種の革命組織に属しています。マリユス自身は彼らの影響は受けつつも、熱心な活動家ではありませんでした。
After a lapse of several years, a University student lives in Gorbeau House, where Jean and Cosette used to live. His name is Marius. He had lived with his grandfather M. Gillenormand, but he ran away from there and began to live alone. His friends, who are also university students, are members of a kind of revolutionist group called “Friends of the ABC”. Marius is influenced by them but he isn’t an enthusiastic activist.

恋に落ちるのは、もちろんマリユスとコゼットです。２人の出会いは、朝の公園でした。ジャン・バルジャンとともにいつもベンチに座っているコゼットのそばを通り過ぎるマリユスは、はじめはただの小娘だと思い、なんの注意も払いません。しかし、半年ほどの間を開けて、久しぶりに散歩に出かけたマリユスは、コゼットが急に美しくなったことに気付くのでした。そこから始まる恋の紆余曲折はもどかしい中にも瑞々しさとユーモアがあり、ロマン主義の作家としてのユゴーの本領が発揮されています。この部分を読むときには、いつも岩館真理子さんの漫画に出てくる少女や少年を思い浮かべてしまいます。
The two who fall in love with each other are, of course, Marius and Cosette. They happen to meet at a park in the morning. At first, Marius doesn’t pay any attentions to Cosette, who always sits on a bench with Jean Valjean, because he thinks she is just a little girl. However, he suddenly finds her beautiful when he goes walking to the park after an interval of six months. Since then they nurture their love even though irritatingly, with twists and turns, but you can find something fresh and humorous in it, and what I feel here is how good Hugo is at writing romance as a Romantic Literary author. Somehow I always think of boys and girls who appears in Mariko Iwadate’s manga whenever I read this part.
