もう何回目になるかわかりませんが、読み直しています。世界中で読まれていて、ミュージカルにも映画にもなっていて、知らぬ人などいないはずのこの本ですが、自分の身近にはなぜか読んだ人がいません。理由はいくつかあるのでしょうが、第一にその長さだと思います。岩波文庫版で1冊500ページ以上の4冊組ですから、軽く2000ページを超える長編です。その時点で手を出すのがためらわれるのはわかります。
I don’t know how many times I read this book so far, and I’m now reading it again. This is a book which is read all over the world, and has been made into musicals or movies, so I guess there is no one who doesn’t know this book. However, I don’t know anyone close to me who read this book. There must be several reasons for it. The first that come to my mind is the length of the story. One volume has more than about 500 pages in the paperback edition published by Iwanami publishing company, so this story runs to nearly 2000 pages in total. This length, I believe, makes people hesitate to take it up.
主人公の名は、ジャン・バルジャン。一片のパンを盗んだために牢屋に入り、脱獄の試みを繰り返した結果、19年もの間、監獄にいた人物です。このお話で最も知られているのは、出所した彼が、どこにも泊めてもらえずに彷徨った挙句、ようやく司教の家に泊めてもらう場面だと思います。素性も訊かずにもてなし、泊めてくれたミリエルという司教に対し、ジャン・バルジャンがしたことはといえば、夜中に銀の食器を盗み出し、そのまま逃げるという、あまりにも恩知らずなことでした。翌朝、結局は捕縛されて、司教宅に連れ戻された彼に、ミリエル司教が言ったことは、「おや、どうして銀の燭台ももっていかなかったのです？あなたにあげたではありませんか。」でした。大切な銀の食器を取り返すどころか、銀の燭台さえもさらに与え、罪を問おうともしないのでした。
Jean Valjean is the name of the protagonist. He has been in jail for 19 years for stealing bread and numerous escape attempts. The best-known part of this story is the scene where Jean Valjean finally stays at a Bishop’s place after wandering all evening because no one allowed him to stay at their places. What Jean Valjean did to the Bishop called Myriel, who gave him shelter without any inquiry, is to run off ungratefully with Myriel’s silverware late at night. The next morning, he ends up being arrested and brought back to Bishop’s place, and what Myriel said to him was, “Oh, why didn’t you take the candlesticks as well? I gave them to you, too, didn’t I?”. He doesn’t only try to take his precious silverware back, but he even gives his silver candlesticks without condemning Jean for his conduct.
子どもの頃、このエピソードだけを何かで読んだとき、「ふーん」と思っただけでした。なんだか説教臭い気がしたのです。しかし、ちゃんと本で読んでみると、涙が出ました。このエピソードの前に、ミリエル司教の人柄について、思い入れが十分に持てるだけのページが割かれているのでした。
It was when I was a boy that I read this episode for the first time and I wasn’t impressed so much at that time. It seemed to be a bit moralizing for me. However, once I read the book properly, I couldn’t help crying. That’s because the good personalities of Bishop Myriel is described so well over several dozen pages.
「悲惨な人々」というタイトルのこのお話はしかし、意外なユーモアにあふれています。思わずクスクスする設定や、可笑しくって声を上げて笑ってしまう場面さえあります。その上に、何度読んでもワクワクさせられるストーリー、ある種の人間の典型を示す登場人物たち、そして19世紀における民主主義の歩みがそこに見て取れて、大きな歴史の一部にふれたような気になります。
次回も、ネタバレしすぎに注意しながら、レ・ミゼラブルの面白さについて語ってみたいと思います。
This book, titled “The Miserable ones”, is unexpectedly full of humor. Some settings make me giggles, plus there are some scenes that make me laugh out loud. On top of that, it has plots that make me exhilarated, characters that shows good example of some sort of people, and you can learn about the history of democracy in 19th century feeling as if you are experiencing the great part of our history.
I’d like to talk about how interesting this book is avoiding to spoil someone’s enjoyment.
