革命のバリケードからマリユスを救い出すという、ジャン・バルジャンの英雄的行為は、もちろん誰にも知られずに行われたのでした。目を覚ましたマリユスにとっても、当然それは謎でした。そして、それはぜひとも解かなければならない謎なのでした。
What Jean Valjean does for Marius, saving him from the barricades after the revolution, is done without anyone knowing about it. It is also a mystery for Marius, who comes to himself, and it is a kind of mystery that should be solved.

マリユスは、コゼットと結婚します。そして、その婚礼が行われたその翌朝、ジャン・バルジャンはマリユスに、彼が徒刑囚であったことを告白します。驚いたマリユスは、コゼットを彼から遠ざけるよう仕向けてしまいます。次第にコゼットと会う機会を失い、ついには全く会えなくなるジャンは、失意のうちに老い衰えていくのでした。
Marius marries Cosette. The next morning after their wedding ceremony was held, Jean Valjean confesses to Marius that he is an ex-convict. Marius is so surprised that he tries to have Cosette stay away from Jean Valjean. Jean loses the chance to see Cosette gradually, and then finally he can’t see her at all, so he becomes feeble aging rapidly.
自分の命を救ってくれた恩人が目の前にいるのに気付かず、しかもその人を苦しめているマリユスに対し、読者は、腹立たしく思うほどにやきもきさせられます。それだけに、ようやくマリユスが事実を知る瞬間には、震えるような感動を覚えます。その上、マリユスがそれを知るのは、あのテナルディエによってなのでした。このあたりの話の途方もない面白さは、ちょっと他に類を見ないように思います。
Readers are frustrated by Marius because he doesn’t notice that the very person who saved his life is in front of him, in addition to that, he causes Jean great distress. However, the frustration you feel that way makes you moved all the more when you read the part where Marius finally knows the fact. On top of that, Marius knows it through what Thenardier says. This part of the story is so interesting that there is nothing to compare with it.
こんなに長いのに冗長でなく、全ての登場人物がつながる見事なプロットに、十分な満足とカタルシスを感じて、読者はページを閉じることになります。確かに、この本の半分近くは寄り道で、それが読む気を失わせる大きな原因でしょうが、そうしたところは読まなくても大丈夫です。
This story is so long but not long-winded, and all the relationships among the characters are woven ingeniously, so you’d be more than satisfied and close the book getting a catharsis. I know there are so many parts, almost 50 percent, that have nothing to do with the story, and that make it difficult to read through this book, but you can skip them.
レ・ミゼラブルの初版は1862年、日本は江戸時代の終わりごろです。そんなに昔のお話なのに、ここまで面白がれるのは不思議です。そして、この本を通じてユゴーが訴えていることが、すでに実現されている今の時代に自分が生きていて、この本を気楽に楽しめることに、大きな喜びを感じています。
The first edition of this book was published in 1862, it was at the end of the Edo era in Japan. It’s strange that I can still enjoy this book very much even now. I feel it’s a great joy to me that I live now and read this book casually in the era when all the questions that Hugo tried to raise through this book are solved.
