悪の闇が深いほど、善は輝くものです。この物語は、慈悲深いミリエル司教、改心したジャン・バルジャンと、善なるものの在り方を痛快なまでに描き出しています。しかし、このお話をさらに面白くしているのは、悪の存在です。ユゴーがこの本で告発している本当の悪とは、悲惨さを生み出す背景である種々のことがら、過酷で理不尽な社会制度や法律、その執行者らだと思います。しかし、生み出された悲惨さの中にも犯罪者や無頼漢といった社会の底辺に巣食う悪があり、それらを描き出す見事な筆致にこそ、ユゴーの作家としての力量が感じられます。
The more evil is rampant, the more good prevail over it. This story describes what good is like to the extent of making me feel exhilarated through benevolent Bishop Myriel and Jean Valjean who amended his conduct. However, what makes this story more interesting is the existence of evil. Things that Hugo tried to blame are backgrounds of the miserable, for example, the social system, the laws, and the law-enforcement agency that are unnecessarily harsh and irrational for people. There also exists evil in the shape of criminals or villains among miserable who are at the bottom of the society. I’m sure that the way Hugo depicts them so well proves the great skills of him as a writer.
この本では、女性における悲惨を描くために、ファンティーヌという人物が登場します。親の顔も知らないような生い立ちの彼女でしたが、美しい容姿に恵まれたファンティーヌはパリで身勝手な男と付き合い、別れたときには身ごもっていたのでした。女児を出産し、仕事を失った彼女の人生は、転落の一途をたどります。故郷のモント・ルイユ・スール・メールに帰ろうとした彼女は、旅の途中、とある宿屋にまだ赤ん坊の愛娘コゼットを預けてしまいます。帰郷した彼女はマドレーヌ氏の工場で働くのですが、周囲の意地悪い詮索から、預けているコゼットのことが発覚し、身持ちの悪い女として、理不尽にも解雇されるのでした。その後、コゼットを預けた宿屋が執拗に催促する仕送りのために、ファンティーヌはついに娼婦にまで身を落としてしまいます。
In this book, there is a character called Fantine who represents the miserable women. She doesn’t know about her parents at all, but she is very beautiful and has a boy friend who is quite selfish, then she finds herself pregnant when she breaks up with him. She gives birth to a girl and loses her job, then her life continues to decline. She leaves Cosette, her baby, in the care of an innkeeper on her way to her hometown called Montreuil-sur-Mer. She can find a job at the factory run by Mr. Madeline in the town, but someone who is meanly nosy exposes her baby, so she is taken as an immoral woman and fired. After that, she is finally reduced to a prostitute to send money to the innkeeper who is taking care of Cosette.

コゼットが預けられた宿屋の亭主、テナルディエこそ、この世に生み出された悲惨さの暗黒部分を象徴する人物です。強欲さ、執念深さ、嫉妬心、自己中心性など、ネガティブな要素しかないこの人物は、自分の利益のために他者を犠牲にすることなど気にもかけません。そして、このテナルディエに盲従しているその女房は、自分の娘以外には関心がなく、人には平気で冷たく当たれる女でした。このような２人に預けられたコゼットがどんな目にあったかは、容易に想像がつくところです。ぼろを着せられ、まともな食事と寝床もなく、下女としてこき使われ、どなられ、たたかれ、ようするに思いつく限りの虐待を受けていたのです。ファンティーヌの仕送りはコゼットのために使われることなど全くなかったのでした。
Thenardiers, the innkeeper, is the person who represents the darkest personality of the miserable. All the characters he shows are such negative ones as greediness, tenaciousness, jealousness, and selfishness, so he feels no qualms about sacrificing other people for his own ends. His wife obeys him blindly and the only thing she care about is her daughters, so she could be so cruel to other people. It is not difficult to imagine what is done to Cosset by such a terrible couple. She doesn’t have enough clothes, food, bed, and was pushed around like a slave, yelled, beaten, in short, absolutely abused. The money sent for her by Fantine wasn’t used for her at all.
クリスマスの前夜、コゼットは真っ暗な森の中に水くみに行かされます。それはコゼットが最も恐れていたことでした。ようやく水を汲んだものの、冷たくて重くて運べないでいた水桶を、大きな手がふいに持ち上げたのでした。ジャン・バルジャンです。病気のために亡くなったファンティーヌの代わりにコゼットを引き取りに来たのでした。コゼットが感じた喜びを、読者はわがことのように感じます。それも、テナルディエ夫婦によるコゼットへの仕打ちをさんざ思い知らされたあとだからです。コゼットをタダでは渡すまいと、本性を剥き出しにする夫婦がジャン・バルジャンにやり込められる場面は実に痛快です。
この夫婦は、物語の後半でも再び登場しますが、そこで行われることは完全な犯罪行為でした。
On Christmas Eve, Cosette is ordered to bring some water from the dark woods. That is the very thing she was afraid of. She finally draws water in the bucket, but it was really difficult for her to carry the cold and heavy bucket by herself. Then she finds a big hand picking up the bucket. It was Jean Valjean. He came there to adopt Cosset for Fantine, who died of disease. Readers can feel the pleasure that is what Cosette feels. That’s because you’ve already known enough about what the couple has done to her. The couple try not to give Jean Cosette unless they get big money, and the scene Jean perfectly argued them down is really exhilarating.
This couple appears in this story afterward again, and what they do is just a crime.
