主な登場人物が力士である、という時点でこのドラマには、他ではみられない制約があったはずです。出演者の中には元力士もいますが、多くの俳優さんは、１年以上かけて体を作ったとのこと。すごいのは、稽古や立ち合いの場面では全員が本物の力士にみえる上に、その他の場面では全員が本物の役者としていい仕事をしていることです。
As for this TV drama, the main characters are sumo wrestlers so I guess there must have been various constraints on making it. You can see some ex-wrestlers among the actors but most of them were not, so they had to build up their bodies. Even so, they all look real wrestlers in their training or bouts, plus any of them does great job as a professional actor in any scenes.
ドラマの成否が主役に左右されるのは当然ですが、まずこの点でこの作品は大成功しています。主役の猿桜(小瀬清)を演じた一ノ瀬ワタルさんは、これ以上はないハマり役です。元キックボクサーとしての格闘スキル、伸び代を感じさせる若々しさ、傲岸さと愛嬌を兼ね備えた稀有なキャラクターの全てが主人公の魅力につながっています。
It can be said that the success of a TV drama depends on the main character, and this one definitely succeeded in that point. The main character called Enno whose real name is Kiyoshi Oze is played by Wataru Ichinose and he is perfect for the role. His fighting skills as an ex-kickboxer, the potential as a young guy, and the arrogant but somehow lovable character, all those things made the main character so attractive.
この主人公に対する、共演者たちの配置とキャラ付けも絶妙です。きたろうさん演じる父のもどかしいほどの不甲斐なさ、余貴美子さんによる母の憎たらしさときたらどうでしょう。生意気な新入りに対する兄弟子たちの辛辣ながらも微妙に色合いが異なる反応、忽那汐里さん演じる左遷された記者役が、興味などなかった相撲の魅力に、夢中になっていく様など、感情移入できる要素が満載です。
The relationships between the protagonist and the others, and the characterization of them are also set up well. How helpless Kiyoshi's father is, and how annoying his mother is. This story is full of things that audience can empathize with such as varied responses by the seniors toward the cheeky attitude of the newcomer, the way how the relegated reporter, who covers Enno's stable played by Shiori Kutsuna, gets fascinated by sumo that she hadn’t been interested in at all.
驚いたのは、部屋の親方を演じた、ピエール瀧さんの風格です。言わずと知れたテクノ バンド、電気グルーヴのメンバーで、ミュージシャンとしての認識しかありませんでした。そんな彼の、元力士らにも見劣りしない体格、そしてそれ以上に強いメンタルを感じさせる演技に感銘を受けました。
What I was amazed by most was the unexpected dignity of the stable manager played by Pierre Taki. I have recognized Taki as just a musician who is a member of a techno music band called Denki Groove. I was impressed by his body structure that is as sturdy as the ex-sumo-wrestlers, and what's more was his strong mentality I could tell from his performance.
唯一の不満は最終回です。因縁のライバルとの大一番が、まさに始まろうという瞬間、エピソードは終わってしまいます。監督の江口カンさんが、続きを作る気持ちがあるのかどうかもさだかではありません。
次のシーズンが観られることを切望しています。
The only thing that made me disappointed was the last episode. It ended at the very moment Enno and his rival started their destined bout. I'm not sure whether the director called Kan Eguchi is going to make the sequels or not.
I really hope to watch another season of this TV drama sometime in the future.
