河口湖からは中央道に乗って箱根に向かいました。目的地は箱根ターンパイクです。「カーグラフィックTV」（BS朝日）や「クルマでいこう」（テレビ神奈川）が好きな人にはおなじみの場所だと思います。
We headed for Hakone along the Chuo Expressway from Lake Kawaguchi. Our destination was Hakone Turnpike. You may be familiar with the road if you like such TV programs as ‘Car Graphic TV’(BS Asahi), ‘Kuruma de Iko’(TV Kanagawa).

有料の私道とはいえ、地元の人にとっては、日常使いの道路かもしれません。でも、長崎在住の自分は、訪れるのは初めてでものすごくワクワクしました。昨年末、友人が（正確には友人の家族が）購入した車は、「カーグラフィックTV」でもとりあげられたことがあるものでした。アルピーヌA110Sです。恥ずかしながら、アルピーヌ自体をよく知らなかった自分です。調べてみると、60年代から70年代にかけてルマン24時間レースで大活躍し、優勝したこともある車の模様。今回、それを試乗させてくれるということで、友人が箱根ターンパイクに連れてきてくれたのでした。
Although it is a private, toll road, a lot of local people may use it in their daily lives, I guess. However, it was so exciting for me, a person who lives in Nagasaki, to visit there for the first time. The car which my friend (or to put it more accurately, one of the members of his family) bought at the end of last year, is one of the cars that was featured in ‘Car Graphic TV’ before. The car is Alpine A110S. I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t know well about Alpine. I checked it on the internet and learned that it used to be entered in 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 60s and 70s, and even won it once. My friend took me to the road to let me try it out this time.

運転席に乗り込むと、純正のバケットシートががっちりと体をホールドしてくれます。キーを差す場所は意外にも助手席の前です。はやる心を抑えつつ、スタータを押すとミッドシップエンジンのうなりが、すぐ後ろから聞こえてきます。アクセルを踏むと力強い反応に笑顔になります。ハンドルについているスポーツモードのボタンを押してアクセルを踏み込むと、猛々しいほどの加速です。全長15kmほどしかない箱根ターンパイクはあっという間に走り切ってしまいました。
I climbed into the driver’s seat and found the bucket seat held me securely. The place to insert the ignition key was, to my surprise, in front of the navigator’s seat. Controlling myself, I pushed the starter and the mid-engine roared from just behind. I put my foot down on the accelerator and smiled as the engine responded strongly. I pressed the sports-mode button on the steering wheel and then stepped on the pedal again, I was impressed by the fierce power of acceleration. I went through Hakone Turnpike, which is only 15 km long, in no time.
その後、スカイラウンジで食べた「さっくりカツカレー」が美味でした。ここでも富士山が楽しめました。よい機会を与えてくれた友人に心から感謝しています。ひとつ困っているのは、帰ってきて乗る自分のコンパクトカーが非力に思えてしょうがないことです。
After that we had ‘Sakkuri Katsu Curry’ at a restaurant called Sky Lounge along the road. I could enjoy the view of Mt. Fuji again. I really appreciate the opportunity my old friend gave me from the bottom of my heart. However, I am having trouble in coming to terms with the feeling that my compact car is quite powerless since I came home.
