買ってからもう25年になります。ずいぶん長い間、本棚に眠らせていましたが、最近になって、また手に取る機会が増えました。1994年に出版されたこの本は、ソウル・ミュージックのガイドブックとして、この上なく有用な1冊です。
It’s been 25 years since I bought this book. I’ve left it gathering dust on the shelf for a long time, but I often take it in my hand recently. This book released in 1994 is so useful as a guidebook for soul music.
900枚を超えるソウル・ミュージックのアルバムを取り上げているこの本は、基本的に年代別の、さらにはジャンルにも配慮した、とても分かりやすい構成になっています。
This book which takes up over 900 disks of soul music is so useful because it has a structure basically arranged in chronological order, but also considering genres, so it is quite easy to understand.
「THE PIONEERS-ソウルのパイオニアたち」と題した第1章で初めに取り上げられているのは、サム・クックの「Twistin’ The Night Away」です。ポップスと呼びたいほど、キャッチーでこの上なく聴きやすいサム・クックの楽曲ですが、解説を読むと、ソウル・ミュージックとして改めて捉えなおすことができます。この本のいいところは、単なるアルバム紹介ではなく、そのアーティストがソウル・ミュージックの歴史上に果たした役割まで解説していることです。
The first chapter titled ‘The Soul Music Pioneers’ takes up ‘Twistin’ The Night Away’ by Sam Cooke for the first disk. His numbers are so catchy and easy for me that you may somehow want to call them pop music, but once you read this book, you can enjoy them as soul music for sure. One of the good points of this book is that it is not just an album guide but also explain the role of the musician in the soul music history.

今になってまた手に取るようになった理由は、ずばりサブスクです。1995年にこの本を買った頃は、拾い読みして、聴きたいものを買ったり、レンタルしたりしていました。当時は、地方にいる限り入手しづらい音源も多くて十分に活用できませんでした。しかし、今は聴こうと思えば大抵の音源はサブスクですぐに聴けるいい時代です。もう容赦なく検索しまくって、気に入ったものをプレイリストにぽいぽい入れています。サブスクにもない音源もあって、それはそれで楽しみだったりします。
The reason why I take up it in my hand recently is, in short, music streaming services. When I bought this book, in 1995, I just skipped through it and tried to buy or rent some CDs that I was interested in. In fact, there were CDs that were difficult to get because I lived in the countryside so couldn’t make full use of the book at that time. However, we live in a great era where we can listen to almost any songs if we want due to music streaming services. I search for a lot of songs without hesitation to put my favorite ones into playlists. There are some songs that are not available in on the services, but I’m somehow not disappointed by it.
現在、この本は中古でしか入手できないようです。アマゾンでは3800円程度で購入できる模様。もともとの定価は2800円だったので1000円ほど高くなっています。それだけの価値はあると思います。
As of now, you can only buy this book second-hand. I checked Amazon and I found it being sold for about 3800 yen. The original price was 2800 yen at that time, so the current price is higher than that by 1000 yen. I believe it is worth buying.
