　以前、中古のミニクーパーを愛車にしていたとき、好んで聴いていたのがドゥ・ワップでした。1950年代から60年代にかけて隆盛を極めたこのジャンルには無数のアーティストによる数々の名曲があります。そして、いくつかの曲には、いまだにかかるとワクワクするような魅力を感じています。

　I used to listen to doo wop when I owned a second-hand Mini Cooper, my cherished car at that time. The popularity of this genre was at its peak from the 1950s to the early 1960s, and there were so many bands and good songs in it. Even now, I’m exhilarated whenever I hear some of them.

THE CLOVERS - ''LOVE POTION NO.9'' (1959)

　1959年にザ・クローヴァーズによってリリースされたこの「ラヴ・ポーション・No.9」のクールな響きは、いまだに新鮮さを感じさせるから不思議です。歌詞の続きでは、少しばかりの媚薬を飲んだ男が、なんにでもキスをし始め、ついには警官にキスしてしまい、媚薬の瓶を割られる展開になっています。この曲は1964年にサーチャーズという白人グループにカバーされています。

Love potion number 9, The Searchers

　This song, “Love potion No.9,” by The Clovers, sounds so cool and somehow still new to me. In the following part of this lyrics, he takes a sip of the love potion and starts to blow kisses to everyone. He finally blows kisses to a cop and the cop breaks the bottle. This song was covered by the Searchers in 1964.

　クローバーズには、「ブルー・ベルベット」という名曲もあります。オールディーズ好きには耳慣れた曲ではないでしょうか。

　余談ですが、ラヴ・ポーション・No.9はクールスの「サマー・レディー」という曲の歌詞にも出てきます。当時はなぜか、香水の名前だと勝手に思い込んでいました。

THE CLOVERS - "BLUE VELVET'' (1954)

　There is another song I like, which is sung by the Clovers, and the song is “Blue Velvet”. I guess it is a popular one among oldies fans.

　Let me say in passing that I remember “love potion No.9” appears in the lyrics of the song called “Summer Lady” by Cools, a Japanese band. I somehow misunderstood at that time that it was the name of a perfume.
