これスマートウォッチ？：見た目アナログ時計のスマートウォッチ「Withings Steel HR」 Is This Really a Smartwatch? : “Withings Steel HR” A Smartwatch Which Looks Like an Analog

　興味ないふりして、秘かに憧れていたのがスマートウォッチです。学生の頃にはサイバーな見た目の安っぽい腕時計をはめて喜んでいたくちなので、本当はアップル・ウォッチが出た瞬間からザワザワしていました。でも、iPhone使いではない自分がアップル・ウォッチを使うのは無理だと思っていたところ、最近は他社からもいろいろなスマートウォッチが出ているのを知りました。

　I’ve pretended not to be interested in smart watches but actually I have been. I used to wear a cyber looking cheap watch when I was a student so I was intrigued by Apple Watch as soon as it went on sale. However, my smartphone was not an iPhone so I gave up buying an Apple Watch but I knew recently that many kinds of smartwatches were coming onto the market from various companies.

 　ネットで調べて、すぐに気になるものがありました。見た目はただのアナログ時計なのに、スマートウォッチとして紹介されていたその時計は、Withings/NokiaのSteel HRです。

   I looked up smartwatches online to find the one I was curious about. The watch just looked like an analog but the explanation said it was a smartwatch called Steel HR from Withings/Nokia.

　Nokiaといえば、以前は携帯電話の端末で世界最大のシェアを誇ったフィンランドの会社です。北欧の時計らしく、デザインがまず気に入りました。機能についてみてみると、メールや電話、ツイッターの着信通知など、スマートウォッチとしての最低限の機能に加え、心拍数や歩数、睡眠データと言ったヘルス・サポートの機能もついているようです。

　Speaking of Nokia, it is a Finnish company which had the biggest share of the cellphone market before. I liked the watch’s design that is so stylish like the other watches from north Europe. Then I found it had the least number of functions as a smartwatch like notification functions for incoming calls, e-mails, tweets, etc. In addition to that, it has other kinds of functions to support your health such as checking the heart rate, footsteps, quality of sleep and so on.

　もっていたアナログ時計が故障していたこともあって、アマゾンで衝動買いしました。届いてみると、デザインも大きさも思った通りで気に入りました。ベルトは少し安っぽいゴム製ですが、プールでの使用を想定したものだと思います。特にスポーツをしているわけではないので、ヘルス・サポートについては十分です。睡眠データは意外に参考になるので気に入っています。メールや着信はバイブで通知しますが、鈍感なのでほとんど気付いたことがありません。　

　I bought it almost on impulse, but actually I needed it because my former analog watch was broken. When it was delivered, I was glad to find that its design and sizes are as good as I thought. The strap is made of rubber so it looks like a bit cheap but it is to allow you to wear it while swimming. I’m not an athlete so the functions for health are enough for me. The sleep data is even more useful than I thought. Incoming e-mails and phone calls are notified with vibration, but I’m insensitive about that so I seldom notice them.      

　スマートウォッチには興味あるけど、あんまりそれっぽいのは、という人には本当におすすめです。同じ北欧のスカーゲンにも、見た目アナログのスマートウォッチはたくさんあるようで、やはりデザインが秀逸なものがそろっています。

　I’d like to recommend this smartwatch to someone who is interested in smartwatches but doesn’t want them to look like typical ones. Skagen, which is also from northern Europe, also has some analog looking smartwatches, and their designs are excellent, too.

遊び心あふれるアルバム：マーデン・ヒル「Sixty Minute Man」 An Album Full of Playful Sounds: “Sixty Minute Man” by Marden Hill

　アシッド・ジャズというとなんだかカッコよすぎて、現実の自分とのギャップに勝手に恥ずかしくなります。そんな自分でもお勧めしたくなるアルバムが、イギリスのバンド、マーデン・ヒルの「Sixty Minute Man」です。とっても洒脱だけれど、なんとなく可笑しみがあって、遊び心あふれるアルバムです。

　Acid jazz is too cool for me to talk about because I feel a gap between the atmosphere of the music and the real image of myself. Even so, there is another album I’d like to recommend you and it is an album called “Sixty Minute Man” by Marden Hill, a British acid jazz band. This album is somewhat stylish and, at the same time, humorously full of playful sounds.

 　前回取り上げたコーデュロイの「HIGH HAVOC」と同じくインスト主体で、似た印象のアルバムですが、よりクールでおしゃれに響きます。印象が似ているのは、トラットリアという同じレーベルからリリースされたことにもよると思います。トラットリアは、９０年代、フリッパーズ・ギター解散後に、小山田圭吾さんが主宰したレーベルですが、アシッド・ジャズにとどまらず、ネオアコからスウェディッシュ・ポップまで当時のとんがった音楽を幅広く扱っていたようです。

　The songs contained in it are mainly instrumentals like the ones in “High Havoc” by Corduroy, the album I mentioned last time. So that’s the reason why the two albums give me a similar impression, but I feel that the album by Marden Hill sounds even cooler and more stylish than Corduroy’s. I guess there is another reason why they give the similar impression and that’s because they were released from the same record label called Trattoria. Trattoria was presided over by Oyamada Keigo in the 90s, after the break-up of Flipper’s Guitar, and this label covered a wide range of leading-edge music at that time, not only acid jazz but also post-punk, Swedish pop music and so on.   

　このアルバムで一番好きな曲は、９曲目の「Spanish Slalom」です。歌の部分はすべていわゆるスキャットになっていて、「ダバダバダバ」というコーラスがとっても印象に残ります。

　The track I love most in this album is the 9th called “Spanish Slalom”. They mostly scat in this song and the chorus part saying “dah-bah-dah-bah-dah” is quite impressive.

 　この曲を聴くと、フリッパーズ・ギターの２ndアルバムに入っている「Southbound Excursion」をどうしても連想してしまいます。タイトルはネオアコのペイル・ファウンテンの曲と同じですが、曲自体はそれとは全く違うスキャットの曲です。マーデン・ヒルは、１９８８年に１stアルバム、「Cadaquez」を出していて、こちらにもスキャットの「Curtain」という曲が入っています。もしかして、パーフリの2人が面白がってそれっぽい曲を作ったのでは、と勝手に推測して喜んでいます。

　This song somehow reminds me of the song called “Southbound Excursion” which is contained in Flipper’s Guitar’s 2^nd album. I think they quoted the title from the song by the Pale Fountains, a British post-punk band, but the impressions of each song are totally different because Flipper’s Guitar’s version is a scat. Marden Hill released the 1^st album called “Cadaquez” in 1988 and it contains the song called “Curtain” in which they also scat. I guess delightfully Oyamada and Ozawa playfully made their song that gives the similar impression as the song by Marden Hill.

インストナンバーの魅力：コーデュロイ 「ハイ・ハヴォック」 Some Instrumental songs I love: Corduroy “HIGH HAVOC”

　９０年代にアシッド・ジャズにハマった人は多かったと思います。ジャミロクワイ、インコグニート、マザー・アースなど、めちゃくちゃカッコいい音があふれていました。ここ数年、日本のバンドでも、cero、ナルバリッチ、Suchmosなど、アシッド・ジャズ寄りの音が増えていたように思います。

　There should have been many people who was into acid jazz in the 90s. I remember so many cool bands like Jamiroquai, Incognito, Mother Earth and so on. Now I find some Japanese bands playing acid jazz recently, for example, cero, Nulbarich, Suchmos, etc.

　クールな音にあふれた９０年代のアシッド・ジャズの中にありながら、なんとなく間の抜けた、半笑いになるようなジャケットのCDがありました。イギリスのバンド、コーデュロイの「HIGH HAVOC」です。

　There was a CD that made me giggle because its jacket was looked a bit ridiculous among the cool sounds of acid jazz in the 90s. That CD was “HIGH HAVOC”.by Corduroy, a British band.

 　へまをして捕まる直前のスパイのような４人に妙に心を惹かれ、CDを手に取ったのを覚えています。ワクワクしながらかけてみると、ハモンド・オルガンを効果的につかったその音は、本当にスパイ映画のサントラのような響きでした。ところどころで可笑しみのあるコーラスが入りますが、収録されている１４曲の多くがインストナンバーです。もともとインストにあまり興味はなかったのですが、このアルバムは、本当に気持ちよくて、なぜか飽きずに長く聴いていられました。

　I was somehow intrigued by four guys on the jacket, who looked like spies being captured due to a blander, and I bought the CD. I listened to it with some expectation to find it somewhat like sound tracks of spy movies using the Hammond organ effectively. In some part, you can hear backup choruses which somehow sounds humorous, but many of those 14 tracks are instrumentals. Actually, I was not interested in instrumentals so much, but this album was so good that I somehow didn’t get enough of them for a while.

　６０年代のバンドのアルバムにも、意外にインストの良い曲があるように思います。先日ふれたスペンサー・デイヴィス・グループにはWaltz for Lumumbaという曲があるし、スモールフェイセズにはWide Eyed Girl On The Wallというとっても素敵な曲があります。なんとなく深夜のラジオ番組を連想してしまう音ですよね。

　There were, in my opinion, many good instrumentals among the albums of bands in the 60s, too. The Spencer Davis Group, the band I mentioned the other day, had a good instrumental song called “Waltz for Lumumba”, and the Small Faces also had a good one called “Wide Eyed Girl on The Wall”. They somehow remind me of a midnight radio program.

電子音なのに懐かしい：ハモンドオルガンの魅力 It Somehow Sounds Nostalgic Despite Being an Electronic Sound: How Attractive the Sound of the Hammond Organ Is

　前回、ブルー・アイド・ソウルを代表するバンド、スペンサー・デイヴィス・グループについてふれました。この時代のバンドの音になぜか惹かれてしまうのですが、そこには、ある共通のものがあることに気付きました。彼らの多くの楽曲でハモンドオルガンが使用されていることです。

　Last time, I mentioned The Spencer Davis Group which represents the genre called Blue Eyed Soul. I’m quite curious about the sounds of bands who are in the same generation as The Spencer Davis Group. I noticed that there is a thing in common among them. That is the fact that many of them used the Hammond organ.

　子どもの頃、親戚の結婚式などに参加すると、式場の専属なのか、必ずハモンドオルガン奏者がいたように思います。その独特の陽気な響きが、バンドに取り込まれると急にクールに響くのはなぜでしょう。

　In my childhood, I used to find a Hammond organ player in a wedding hall when I attended my relatives’ wedding party, even though I was not sure whether they belonged to the hall or not. I’m wondering why its unique, rather gay sound could be unexpectedly so cool when it is played in a band.

　手元にある６０年代のバンドの音をいくつか改めて聞き直してみると、スモールフェイセズもマンフレッド・マンもハモンド・オルガンを使いまくっています。９０年代のアシッド・ジャズにおいても、ハモンド・オルガンは活躍していたように思います。自分が特にハマっていたコーデュロイの「ハイ・ハヴォック」でも大切な要素になっていました。

　Now that I listened to the bands of the 60s again, I can find the Hammond organ used by many bands like Small Faces, Manfred Mann and so on. In the 90s, the Hammond organ was often used particularly in the genre called acid jazz. I especially loved Corduroy, a band in that genre, and they used the Hammond organ very effectively in an album called "High Havoc".

　Wikiでみると、ハモンド・オルガンはローレンス・ハモンドという人により１９３４に発明されたとのこと。発明当時の機構は７０年代まで使用されたものの、現在では電子回路を利用して、同様の音が出されているそうです。

　Looking up in Wikipedia, the Hammond organ was invented by a man called Laurens Hammod in 1934. The original system had been used until the70s, but currently, its sound is produced by making use of electronic circuits.

　最近は、アシッド・ジャズ的な音をよく耳にするように思います。あらためてハモンド・オルガンの音を意識して聴いてみると、ナルバリッチの曲などにまだまだ健在であることがわかりました。昔と今をつないでいる不思議な音のように思います。

　I have a feeling that there are many bands that plays acid jazz recenlty. I found some bands like Nulbarich still often uses the Hammond organ even now. It seems like the sound of the Hammond organ is something that connects the present and the past.

不思議と飽きない曲：スペンサー・デイヴィス・グループ「Gimme Some Lovin’」 Songs I Can’t Get Enough of: “Gimme Some Lovin’” by The Spencer Davis Group

　ベースとドラムで刻む、シンプルな出だしでもう心がざわつきます。そしてハモンド・オルガンのクールなフレーズに胸が高鳴ったところで、スティーヴ・ウィンウッドの真っ黒い声に連れていかれます。

　The simple beat, played by the bass guitar and the drums at the beginning of this song, stirs my heart soon enough. Then the cool phrase played by the Hammond organ makes me excited and, after that, I’m perfectly carried away by the soulful voice of Steve Winwood.

 　自分が持っているスペンサー・デイヴィス・グループのCDは、ベスト盤だけですが、そのジャケットに惹かれます。メンバーの4人が乗っかっている小さいジープのようなものは、ミニモークと呼ばれるもので、ミニをベースとしたオフロード車です。このCDを買った当時、中古のミニクーパーを愛車としていた自分にとって興味津々の車でした。

　As to The Spencer Davis Group, I only have an album CD of their best songs and I somehow love the jacket of it. What you can see there is the four members of the band who are on a vehicle that looks like a small jeep and this is the vehicle called Mini Moke which is an offroad vehicle based on Mini. I was pretty interested in the car because I possessed a Mini Cooper, a used one, at that time.

　収録されている14曲の中で、前は「Gimme Some Lovin’」だけが突出していたような印象がありました。でも、久しぶりに聴いてみると、全曲ともにキャッチーで、いわゆるブルー・アイド・ソウルを代表する名盤だと改めて感じました。

　　I have had an impression that “Gimme Some Lovin’” is outstanding among the fourteen songs contained in this album, Now that I listened to this CD again after a long time, however, I feel all the other songs are so catchy that I feel this CD deserves to represent the category so called Blue Eyed Soul.

　それにしても、スティーヴ・ウィンウッドの声は本当にソウルフルです。余談ですが、日本のシンガーでソウルフルな声といえば椎名林檎のお兄さんの椎名純平さんが浮かびます。「唄ひ手冥利〜其ノ壱〜」に収録されている兄妹でのデュエット、「玉葱のハッピーソング」は衝撃的でした。元ネタのマーヴィン・ゲイよりも明らかに黒くて笑顔になりました。

　By the way, the voice of Steve Winwood sounds really soulful. When I think of someone with soulful voice among Japanese singers, let me say in passing, Shiina Junpei, who is the brother of Shiina Ringo, comes in mind first. A duet “The Onion Song” sung by Junpei and Ringo is contained in a Ringo’s albuym named “Utaite Myori ~Sono Ichi~” and this song was amazing. His voice was even more soulful than Marvin Gaye the original singer of the song, and this fact somehow made me smile.

主役に魅せられる映画：「レッド・スパロー」（2018） The Main Character Is So Attractive: “Red Sparrow”(2018)

　ジェニファー・ローレンスの魅力ときたらどうでしょう。ストーリーなど二の次で夢中にさせる力があるように思います。

　How attractive, as an actor, Jennifer Lawrence is. Her attractiveness somehow makes me even feel that the story doesn’t matter.

　アマゾンプライムでアメリカの映画「レッド・スパロー」を観ました。ジェニファー・ローレンスを主役とするこの映画は、現代のロシアの諜報機関とアメリカのCIAとの攻防を描いたスパイ映画です。

　I saw an American movie “Red Sparrow” on Amazon Prime Video. This movie starring Jennifer Lawrence is about the battle between Russian intelligence service and C.I.A.

　ロシアのバレリーナ、ドミニカ・エゴロワ（ジェニファー・ローレンス）は、公演中の事故で足に大けがを負い、引退を余儀なくされてしまいます。病気の母をかかえ、将来に希望を失った彼女の元に訪ねてきたのは、彼女の叔父であるイワンでした。彼女に仕事を斡旋するイワンでしたが、その内容はあるマフィアのボスを誘惑するというものだったのです。ドミニカはその仕事を引き受けるのですが、彼女が誘惑した男は結局殺されてしまうのでした。実のところ、イワンの正体は諜報機関の幹部でした。彼は、ドミニカにスパイの資質を見出し、暗殺事件に巻き込むことで、彼女を逃れられない状況に追い込んだのです。母親の医療を保証することを条件に、ドミニカは諜報機関に送り込まれ、厳しい訓練を課されることになるのですが……。

　A Russian ballerina, Dominika Egorova,(Jennifer Lawrence) suffers severe injuries to her leg during the performance to end up retiring from the stage. Her uncle, Ivan, comes to see her when she has lost all her hope while taking care of her sick mother. He gives Dominika a job but what the job involves is to seduce a Mafia boss. She takes it and carries it out but the Mafia boss is somehow assassinated just after meeting her. Actually, Ivan is a senior official in the intelligence service. He finds her fit for espionage so he makes her get involved in the assassination in order to put her in the situation where she had no other option. Dominika eventually is sent to the intelligence service to take severe training with the condition that her mother should be taken care of…….    

　ストーリーはやや煩雑でしたが、十分に楽しめました。それも、ジェニファー・ローレンスの魅力に負うところが大きかったように思います。

　「ハンガーゲーム」を始めて観たときの衝撃は忘れません。当時、彼女は二十歳を超えていたようですが、まだ少女の面影を残しており、それでいてハッとするほどの美しさと強さにあふれていました。「レッド・スパロー」では大人の女性としての魅力が十二分に発揮されています。女優としての彼女が好きな人にはおすすめの映画です。

　The plot was rather complicated but I enjoyed a lot. That’s mainly because Jennifer Lawrence was so attractive.

　 I remember how I was amazed when I watched “Hanger Game” for the first time. I guess she was over 20 then but she looked like a young girl plus, at the same time, she was breathtakingly beautiful and strong. In this movie, “Red Sparrow”, she shows her own mature charm more than enough. I recommend this movie to people who love her as an actor.

先入観とかけ離れた映画：「アフリカの女王」 A Movie Which Is a Far Cry from What I Thought It Would Be Like: “The African Queen”

　いわゆる名画の中には、いつか観てみたいと思いながら、観ないでいるものが多くあります。あらすじも知らない名画については、題名だけでワクワクしたり、逆に題名だけで敬遠してしまったりしがちです。正直、「アフリカの女王」というタイトルには全く惹かれるところがありませんでした。

　Among so called classics, there are many films which I’ve never watched in spite of wanting to. When I hear just the title of some classic movies that I don’t even know the summary, sometimes I’d be exhilarated or sometimes I’d put that on the back burner. Honestly, I wasn’t intrigued by the title of the movie, “The African Queen” ,at all.

　勝手に心に浮かんだのは、名も知らぬ部族を治める密林の女王、または、エジプトのクレオパトラあたりです。ぼんやりとアマゾンプライムの解説に目を通すと「おんぼろ蒸気船『アフリカの女王』…」という記述を目にし、え、船の名前？と身を乗り出しました。ちゃんと読んでみると、「第一次大戦下の独領東アフリカ…」、「行く手には激流や大瀑布、そしてドイツの戦艦が待ち受ける…」という設定を知り、急に見る気満々になりました。

　What came to mind first when I heard the title was a queen of the jungle who reigns over unknown tribes, or Cleopatra from Egypt or so on. I read absent mindedly the commentary about the movie on Amazon Prime Video and I was suddenly attracted by the part that said “…’African Queen’, a decrepit small steam launch”, so I thought “It’s not a person, It’s a boat”, then I reread it closely to know the settings like, “In German East Africa during World War I…”, “what waits for them are torrents, waterfalls, and a gunboat of Germany…”, so I was really interested in it.

　第一次大戦の勃発に騒然とする世界をよそに、アフリカはコンゴの村で布教に努める宣教師サミュエルとその妹ローズは、物資の不足に耐えつつ、静かな日常を送っています。村人の信頼を得て、立派に使命を果たしているサミュエルですが、ある日、ドイツ軍が押し寄せ、村を焼き払ってしまうのでした。失意のあまり彼は絶命し、妹のローズ（キャサリン・ヘップバーン）は一人残されてしまいます。そこに、村々に食糧や郵便を届ける川蒸気「アフリカの女王」の船長チャーリー（ハンフリー・ボガート）が訪れます。彼女を船にかくまい、一緒にかくれていようと言うチャーリーに対し、ローズは驚きの提案をします。この「アフリカの女王」で川を下り、イギリスの艦隊を待ち伏せしているドイツの砲艦を爆破しようというのでした。毅然としたローズの態度に渋々従うチャーリーでしたが……。

　A missionary Samuel and his sister Rose who have worked in Congo, Africa, spend their life peacefully enduring the shortage of goods. Samuel has carried out his mission so well that he has gained the trust of the village people. However, one day, German troops come to burn down the village. He dies of a broken spirit so Rose (Katharine Hepburn) is left alone. Then Charlie, the captain of “African Queen”, a small steam launch which delivers food and goods to villages, visited her. He takes her on his boat and asked her to keep hiding together with him, but she turns down his idea and makes an amazing proposal. Her proposal is that they should try to go down the river on “African Queen” so that they can blow up the German gunboat which lies in ambush for British forces. Her dauntless attitude makes Charlie agree reluctantly…….

　よいものは、時を経ても色あせることはないと、改めて思い知らされました。１９５１年公開のこの「アフリカの女王」は、映像の迫力において、今どきの冒険映画と比較にならないのは言うまでもありません。しかし、派手な演出がないぶん、かえってリアリティがあります。また、ハンフリー・ボガートとキャサリン・ヘップバーンの振る舞いや所作に、現代の俳優にはない魅力さえ感じました。先入観を持たずに、名画を楽しんでいきたいです。

　I realized again that something really good never fades. This movie was released in 1951, so old and less spectacular than the modern adventure films. But its simple, subdued direction makes us feel reality even more. I somehow felt attractiveness which I never feel nowadays, from the behavior of actors, Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. I’d like to enjoy classic movies without any prejudice.
