アシッド・ジャズというとなんだかカッコよすぎて、現実の自分とのギャップに勝手に恥ずかしくなります。そんな自分でもお勧めしたくなるアルバムが、イギリスのバンド、マーデン・ヒルの「Sixty Minute Man」です。とっても洒脱だけれど、なんとなく可笑しみがあって、遊び心あふれるアルバムです。
Acid jazz is too cool for me to talk about because I feel a gap between the atmosphere of the music and the real image of myself. Even so, there is another album I’d like to recommend you and it is an album called “Sixty Minute Man” by Marden Hill, a British acid jazz band. This album is somewhat stylish and, at the same time, humorously full of playful sounds.
前回取り上げたコーデュロイの「HIGH HAVOC」と同じくインスト主体で、似た印象のアルバムですが、よりクールでおしゃれに響きます。印象が似ているのは、トラットリアという同じレーベルからリリースされたことにもよると思います。トラットリアは、９０年代、フリッパーズ・ギター解散後に、小山田圭吾さんが主宰したレーベルですが、アシッド・ジャズにとどまらず、ネオアコからスウェディッシュ・ポップまで当時のとんがった音楽を幅広く扱っていたようです。
The songs contained in it are mainly instrumentals like the ones in “High Havoc” by Corduroy, the album I mentioned last time. So that’s the reason why the two albums give me a similar impression, but I feel that the album by Marden Hill sounds even cooler and more stylish than Corduroy’s. I guess there is another reason why they give the similar impression and that’s because they were released from the same record label called Trattoria. Trattoria was presided over by Oyamada Keigo in the 90s, after the break-up of Flipper’s Guitar, and this label covered a wide range of leading-edge music at that time, not only acid jazz but also post-punk, Swedish pop music and so on.
このアルバムで一番好きな曲は、９曲目の「Spanish Slalom」です。歌の部分はすべていわゆるスキャットになっていて、「ダバダバダバ」というコーラスがとっても印象に残ります。
The track I love most in this album is the 9th called “Spanish Slalom”. They mostly scat in this song and the chorus part saying “dah-bah-dah-bah-dah” is quite impressive.
この曲を聴くと、フリッパーズ・ギターの２ndアルバムに入っている「Southbound Excursion」をどうしても連想してしまいます。タイトルはネオアコのペイル・ファウンテンの曲と同じですが、曲自体はそれとは全く違うスキャットの曲です。マーデン・ヒルは、１９８８年に１stアルバム、「Cadaquez」を出していて、こちらにもスキャットの「Curtain」という曲が入っています。もしかして、パーフリの2人が面白がってそれっぽい曲を作ったのでは、と勝手に推測して喜んでいます。
This song somehow reminds me of the song called “Southbound Excursion” which is contained in Flipper’s Guitar’s 2nd album. I think they quoted the title from the song by the Pale Fountains, a British post-punk band, but the impressions of each song are totally different because Flipper’s Guitar’s version is a scat. Marden Hill released the 1st album called “Cadaquez” in 1988 and it contains the song called “Curtain” in which they also scat. I guess delightfully Oyamada and Ozawa playfully made their song that gives the similar impression as the song by Marden Hill.
