主人公の高校教師、中村秀雄という人物は、教師としての理想も、生徒からの人望も、親友も、恋人もない、要するにこれと言った魅力も、面白みもない人物です。もっと言えば、言動の端々に小賢しさ、融通の利かなさが感じられて、視聴者は、むしろ苛立たしささえ覚えます。凄いと思うのは、今、ここで述べた人物像を、草彅剛さんが、第一話の前半で見事に演じ切っていることです。
The main character called Hideo Nakamura, a high school teacher, is a someone with no ideals as a teacher, no popularity with his students, no close friends, and no girlfriend. In short, he is a guy not so attractive nor interesting. Plus, you can see somewhat cheeky and obstinate character in his speech and behavior so you would be irritated. There’s one thing that makes me impressed very much, and it is the great performance by Tsuyoshi Kusanagi who fully conveys the Nakamura’s character to us viewers already in the first half of the first episode.
このドラマの面白さが主人公の変容にかかっているとすれば、その人物の元々の卑小さをしっかりと描くことは、物語の土台として、最も大切であることに違いありません。だとすれば、第一話で中村秀雄の人物像を見事に表現している草彅さんの演技力こそが、このドラマを面白くしている最大の要素だといえます。そして草彅さんはそれを見事にやり切っているのです。
If the charm of this drama owes to the main character’s emotional development, describing his original petty spirit must be the most important thing as the foundation of the story. If so Kusanagi’s performance in skillfully playing Hideo Nakamura’s character is the main factor which makes the drama so interesting. I’m sure Kusanagi did it very well.
その人となりは、万引きをした生徒との次のようなやり取りによく表れています。
The following conversation between him and a student who did shoplifting shows what he is like very well.
生徒：「将来って何ですか。」
Student: ‘What do you think a bright future should be like’
中村：「それは、いい大学に入って、いい会社に入ることです」
Nakamura: ’To enter a proper university, then to enter a big company’
生徒：「それがいい将来ですか。」
Student: ‘Is it a bright future?’
中村：「そりゃあ、そうですよ。」
Nakamura: ‘Yes, of course’
ここで同僚の教師、久保勝（谷原章介）が入ってきます。
Masaru Kubo, one of the colleagues of Nakamura cuts in.
久保：「いい大学入って、いい会社に入っといて損は無いんだから」
Kubo: ‘There’s no harm in trying to enter a proper university, and then a big company’
同じことを言っているのに、生徒の反応が違うのは、やはり人柄でしょうか。
The reason why the student’s reaction was so different, even though they told him almost the same thing, may be due to the difference between their characters.
クラスの女子生徒、杉田めぐみ（綾瀬はるか）に対する進路指導では、
He gives a girl student an academic and career counseling, and she asks,
「なんで教師になったの？」
‘Why did you become a teacher?’
と訊かれ、その返答は、
And his reply was,
「まあ、いろいろですよ。」
‘Well, for various reasons’
でした。
秘かに憧れている同僚の秋本みどり（矢田亜希子）に対しても中途半端にアプローチして、一人で勝手に振られたつもりになっているのでした。
He has s crush on a female colleague named Midori Akimoto, so he tries to approach her but can’t do it properly, and ends up giving her up without a fight.
「じゃあ、砂肝、砂肝食べに行きませんか？」
‘Then, why, why don’t we go out for sunagimo’
「日曜日はなんかデートみたいですかね。やめましょうやめましょう。」
‘Going out together on Sunday sounds like having a date, doesn’t it? no, no, we shouldn’t’
その後、家に届いた健康診断の結果で再検査の判定を受けた中村は、病院に行き、医師の金田勉三から、スキルス胃がんであることを告げられます。
After that he receives the result of the medical check and it says that he needs another physical, so he went to the hospital and ended up being told that he has scirrhous gastric cancer.
検査結果について、大切な話があります。
自分の余命が1年と知った中村は、不安定な心理に陥り、無断欠勤をし、捨て鉢な言動を繰り返します。やがて夜道で不良に襲われた中村は、彼らに食って掛かり、
「なんで僕なんだよ、なんでお前らみたいな奴じゃなくて、僕なんだよ！」
と感情を爆発させるのでした。
He has become mentally unstable, so he begins to be absent from work without notice and desperate since he was informed that he has only a year to live. Presently, he is attacked by hoodlums on a dark street one night and he shouts at them,
‘Why me, of all people. Why not someone like you, it has to be me!’
He explodes with rage.
なんで僕なんだよ！
第2話から、中村は変わります。そして、1年という短い余命を一生懸命に生きようとする彼を支える人物がいます。矢田亜希子さん演じる秋本みどりです。次回は、彼女の魅力について振り返ってみたいと思います。
Nakamura begins to change starting from the second episode. There is a someone who supports him, who is trying to live his short life only a year left enjoying himself as much as possible. The person is Midori Akimoto played by Akiko Yada. I’d like to consider her charm next time.
