80年代のティーンズには，ドゥーワップやオールディーズを好きになる機会がふんだんにありました。シャネルズ（のちのラッツ＆スター）でドゥーワップを知り，お兄ちゃんやお姉ちゃんが持っていたクールスのレコードでオールディーズを聞きかじり，水曜ロードショーなどで観た青春映画「グローイング・アップ」や「グリース」のサントラの中古レコードやカセットを買ったりしていました。
People who were in their teens in the 1980s had many chances to come to like doo-wop or oldies. They became familiar with doo-wop through listening to Chanels who later became Rats and Star, or they learn a smattering of oldies through hearing the records of Cools owned by their elder brothers or sisters, and sometimes they bought secondhand records or cassette tapes of some soundtracks of movies about young people like “Growing Up”, “Grease” and so on.
Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons Alone
あきあきするほど聴いたオールディーズですが，いまだに大好きな曲がいくつかあります。その一つが，ザ・ヴィーナスの「アローン」です。元ネタは60年代に活躍したフォー・シーズンズというグループだと思います。原曲は男声コーラスにもかかわらずとても可愛い曲ですが，ザ・ヴィーナスのボーカル，コニーさんの歌声により，可愛さがヒートアップしています。ちなみに，前回ふれた山下達郎さんも，1980年リリースのアルバム「オン・ザ・ストリート・コーナー」においてこの曲をカバーしています。こちらはアカペラになっており，そのクリアーなサウンドに圧倒されます。
I almost fed up with oldies, but there are some songs I still love to listen to even now. “ALONE” covered by a band called The Venus is the one of that kind. The original song was sung by a group called Four Seasons who were active in the 1960s. Even though the group was a male choir, the original song somehow sounds cute, but the cover version sounds more adorable due to the cute voice of Conny who was the vocalist of the band. By the way, Yamashita Tatsuro who I mentioned last time also covered this song in an album titled “On the street corner” which was released in 1980. This is a cappella version which you must be overwhelmed by its amazingly clear sound.
