正直、期待していませんでした。1986年公開のトップガンはもちろん見たことがあります。あんなに人気の映画でしたが、不思議とどんなお話か覚えていなくて、今回映画館に行く前夜にアマゾンプライムで観なおしてみました。はっきり言ってつまらない作品でした。トム・クルーズは好きですが、トム・クルーズの魅力だけで成り立っている映画も多いだけに、今回もそうに違いないと、がっかりする気満々だったという次第です。そんな気持ちで観たこの映画は、予想外に楽しめる作品でした。ワクワクしたし、スリルはあるし、クスクス笑って、最後は不覚にも涙が出ました。
To be honest, I didn’t have any expectations for this movie. I watched the first episode in 1986 for sure. It was so popular at that time but I didn’t remember what the story was like somehow, so I watched it again on Amazon Prime on the night before I went to see this movie. Frankly speaking, it was boring. I like Tom Cruise but there were a lot of films which just leaned on his attractiveness so I assumed this movie could go like that and I was ready to be disappointed. Nevertheless, it was unexpectedly enjoyable. I was excited, thrilled, giggled, and in the end, cried.

前作がつまらなく感じる原因の一つは、物語の舞台が基地にとどまっていたことです。そこで行われる訓練は、ときに命がけと言っていいほど過酷なものであるにせよ、物語としては、若者にありがちな挫折と成長を描いたものに過ぎなくなります。今作では、クライマックスで実際の戦闘場面が描かれます。そこに至る過程での訓練には明確な目的があり、人間関係においてとてつもない緊張感が生まれるのは当然と言っていいでしょう。つまり、第2作には前作以上のリアリティが感じられるということです。また、今作が成功している要因の一つに、第一作での設定がうまく引き継がれ、未解決だったことに巧みに決着が付けられるということがあります。マーヴェリックの友人で、訓練中に亡くなったグースの息子、ルースターが今作には登場します。グースの死に責任を感じているマーヴェリックとルースターの関係が、物語にまたよい緊張感を与えているのです。
One of the reasons that made the first episode dull was the settings of the story were limited within the base. Although the training they had there was so hard that it was sometimes life-threatening, the story just described their setbacks and developments. In the new movie, the climax is the scene of an air battle. So it is natural that the training has clear aims to achieve and extreme tensions can be seen in relationships between pilots. In other words, you can feel some more reality in this second episode than the first one. Plus, there is another reason that made this second episode a success and it is that the settings in the first episode were successfully carried over to it and some unsolved things in the first were convincingly solved. For example, Rooster, who is the son of Goose, a friend of Maverick who died in training before, appears in this episode. Maverick still feels responsibility for his death so the relationship between Rooster and him gives the story a favorable tension.
36年後に作られた続編が、前作より面白いという現象は稀なのではないでしょうか。似た例を挙げるとすれば、やはりトム・クルーズが出演していたハスラー2が思い浮かびます。しかし、このハスラーにしても第一作から25年後だったことを思うと、36年という数字には驚きを感じます。しかも、主役のトム・クルーズは、分別臭い年寄りを演じているわけではけしてありません。そこにあるのは、むしろ血気盛んな若者以上に冒険心に富み、危険を顧みずに行動する男の姿です。
I have a feeling that it is rare that a sequel after 36 years could be more enjoyable than the first episode. A similar case I can come up with is ‘Hustler 2’, which featured Tom Cruise too. However, that movie was released after 25 years of the first episode, so I cannot help feeling that 36 years is amazing. On top of that, it is not that Tom Cruise played a sensible old guy. What he played there was a man, who has a more adventurous spirit than those hot-blooded young pilots and wdorks on the mission while ignoring the danger.
こうなると、来年夏公開予定のハリソン・フォード演じるインディ・ジョーンズにも期待が高まってしまいます。
Now that I was more than satisfied with this sequel, I cannot help expecting the sequel of Indiana Jones starring Harrison Ford, which is going to be released next summer, so much.
