A drama that never fades: ‘Boku no Ikiru Michi’ starring Tsuyoshi Kusanagi⑧ The outstanding direction

I suppose one of the major elements that made this drama successful is the excellent direction.

First, I’d like to mention the skillful camera blocking. In the first episode, there is a scene where Hideo asks Midori out to dinner,  and Hideo’s expressions on his face are frequently brought into close-up in that scene so that viewers are able to easily understand the details of his feeling which is wavering between expectation and uneasiness. Plus, the camerawork at another scene where Hideo wanders around looking defected after being informed that he has only a year to live is skillfully conveys that he is not able to accept the fact and settles down.

Second, they used BGM properly and sometimes didn’t use it on purpose. I loved the BGM used in this drama and it really went well with every scene so much that I can remember a lot of scenes if I hear just a part of it even now. However, there is one thing I was impressed most, and it was that they didn’t use BGM at some really important scenes. In the last episode, Hideo finally comes to his end sitting in a seat of the concert hall after the choral competition. There’s no music here. I think any music could be in the way at this scene. I know there are a lot of dramas which try to convey how important a scene is to viewers by using pathetic BGM. Whenever I watch such kinds of dramas, I somehow become irritated wondering whether they underestimate the understanding of us. I guess this drama successfully anticipate the feeling of viewers, and that is the best part of this drama.

In the third place, there are plenty of scenes of meals. This is in common with other dramas I like. I tend to be attracted by dramas which have a lot of scenes where characters eat something heartily. I guess that’s because having meals is essential to living. In this drama, the main character has scirrhous cancer and that’s the reason why every casual scenes of meals could be something precious even more after finishing watching this drama. Hideo’s last word was ‘sunagimo (a kind of yakitori)’.

Actually, there is one more direction that characterizes this drama, but I’d like to mention it next time.
