イントロが鳴った瞬間に連れて行かれます。ポール・ウェラー率いるイギリスのユニット，スタイル・カウンシルのデビュー曲，「スピーク・ライク・ア・チャイルド」がかかると，今でもワクワクしてしまいます。キャッチーでオシャレな響きがする曲は多いにしても，この曲は群を抜いていると思わせる何かがあります。
I’m carried away just when I hear the introduction. I still feel exhilarated when I happen to hear the song “Speak like a child” by The Style Council which is a group led by Paul Weller in the U.K. I’m sure there are many songs that sounds catchy and cool, but this song is something that makes me feel it is by far the best.

ジャンル分けが無意味になった今の時代ですが，その流れを作ったのが，この頃のポール・ウェラーだったように思います。イギリスでまだ人気の絶頂だったザ・ジャムを解散させてまでポール・ウェラーがやりたかったことは，まさにジャンルの枠にとらわれない音作りだったのではないでしょうか。ジャムの大ファンにとっては，スタイル・カウンシルの音はある意味裏切りのように聞こえたかもしれません。AORやジャズ，曲によってはネオアコと言いたくなるようなものもあります。ジャムの曲も大好きでしたが，やはりスタカンの音には今でも通用するような新しさを感じます。
Nowadays it is meaningless to group musicians by genre, and it seems like Paul Weller was the first musician who created this current. What Paul Weller really wanted to do was to create sounds which he really wanted to create not caring about genre, and he even broke up The Jam, his former band, which was still at the height of their fame in order to realize his ideals. The Style Council’s songs might have been some kinds of treachery for the ardent fans of The Jam. Their songs sound like AOR, jazz, and sometimes neo acoustic. Actually, I loved the songs of The Jam, but I feel that the songs of The Style Council sound still new even now.

変化していくことにおいてぶれないポール・ウェラーは，最近では「Mother Ethiopia」という曲でエスニックな音を響かせてもいます。モッド・リバイバルのリーダーでもあったポール・ウェラーのカッコよさは筋金入りでした。９０年ごろのロッキング・オンの表紙で金色の鼻毛を惜しげもなく飛び出させていましたが，むしろカッコいいと感心したものでした。
Paul Weller, who doesn’t waver in changing his style, made a song called “Mother Ethiopia” which sounds like ethnic recently. He was one of the leaders of the mod revival so he was extremely cool. I remember a photograph of him appears on the front cover of the magazine called Rockin’on around the early 90’s and he let his blond nose hair stick out of his nostril, but I somehow felt it was rather cool.
