アウディS1を購入して1か月が経ちました。購入前に感じたワクワク感は全く衰えず、それどころかますますこの車に対する興味が高まっています。今回は、以前に乗っていたスイフトスポーツと比較しながら、その動力性能についてレビューしてみます。
One month has passed since I bought my Audi S1. I still feel the same exhilaration I felt before I got it, and I’m even more interested in it now. I will review its performance here comparing with my old Swift Sport.
S1は、スイフトスポーツよりもわずかに大きいボディに２Lのターボエンジン、いわゆるTFSI（Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection）を積んでいます。これは、車格が上のS3と同じもので、本来280psの馬力/380N・ｍのトルクが出せるものを231ps/370N・ｍにデチューンしたものです。ゴルフGTIに搭載されているエンジンもこれと同格で、よくYouTube等で比較されています。コーディングで本来のパワーを引き出すことは可能のようですが、日常使いではそのままでも持て余すほどのパフォーマンスを発揮します。
The S1 has a 2L, turbocharged engine called TFSI (Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection) in its small body, which is just a little bit larger than that of the Swift Sport. The engine is the same as the one in the S3, the upper grade above the S1, and it originally has 280ps/ 380N・ｍ but is detuned to 231ps/ 370N・m. The Golf GTI also has the same engine, and you can watch many videos on YouTube, in which people compare them. S1’s engine can reach its full potential through coding but the performance is enough for daily use just the way it is.

スイスポでは、3速でベタ踏みしていた場所でも、S1ではスピードが出過ぎてそこまで踏み込めません。早めに4速に入れてもベタ踏みできる時間はわずかです。勾配のゆるい上り坂では、5速でも力強く加速します。しかし、加速はリニアで猛々しさまでは感じません。気がつくとかなりのスピードが出てしまっているという感じです。人によってはスイスポの1.6L自然吸気エンジンの方がちょうどよく楽しめるというかもしれません。それほど加速はスムーズで、かつ有り余るパワーを持っています。シフトチェンジはスイスポと同じくらいに軽く、より小気味よくハマります。
I cannot safely press the accelerator to the floor in third gear in the S1at a place where I used to do that in the Swift Sport. I can do that just for a little while, even in the fourth gear. On a gentle uphill road, you can accelerate it easily even in the fifth gear. However, its way of acceleration is really smooth so I can’t say it’s fierce. I find myself driving it at high speed without knowing it. Some people may prefer Swift Sport’s 1.6L NA engine to that of the S1 because it is just right to enjoy daily driving. You can accelerate the S1 so smoothly without unnecessarily using too much power. The feeling of shifting gears is as easy as Swift Sport and you can do it more securely, plus more enjoyably than Swift Sport.
この力強さを安心して楽しめるような足回りが、S1にはちゃんと設定されています。ベース車のA1がFFなのに対して、S1は４WDを搭載しているからです。４WDのよさはまず、車の動き出しで感じることができます。確実に地面をつかんで前に転がり出します。あとはやはりコーナリングです。下りで、ブレーキを踏まずにコーナーを回っても抜群の安定感があります。雨の日、濡れた路面でも不安を感じません。18インチのタイヤ設定も安定感に貢献していると思います。この足回りを操作するステアリングフィールも秀逸です。握りよい太さに、手に吸い付くような質感が素晴らしいです。Dシェイプは初め戸惑いましたが、慣れてくるにつれ取り回しのしやすさを感じます。スイスポとほぼ同じ全長は、意外なまでに小回りのよさに生きています。
The S1 also has a drive system that enables you to enjoy safely driving this powerful car. That’s because the S1 has a four-wheel-drive system whereas the A1, the base grade of the S1, has a front-wheel-drive system. You can feel the benefit of 4WD just when you start the car. It securely grabs the ground to move forward. Then you will realize it again on bends. You will feel the great stability of the car when you round a bend without slackening. You won’t feel uneasy even on wet roads on a rainy day. The 18 inch tires, in my opinion, also make a contribution to the stability. The feeling of the steering wheel is so good, too. The thickness of it is just right for me, and its texture greatly helps my grasp. The D shaped steering wheel is easy to handle once you get used to it. The overall length of S1, which is as short as that of Swift Sport, unexpectedly enables you to make sharp turns.
