アメリカ国内で同時に、しかし互いに離れた３か所で発生した謎のウイルスによる感染症について、最初の糸口をつかむのは、ソフィア・ラッセルという名の女性医師です。国立の感染症研究所に勤務する彼女は、このウイルスのDNAシーケンスデータに奇妙な既視感を覚えます。記憶をたどるうちに、大学時代に研究室の仲間たちとペルーで行ったフィールドトリップの際のある出来事を思い出します。そして、その時に出会った一人の人物の連絡先を探し出し、電話をかけますが、それをきっかけに彼女は殺されてしまうのでした。
It is a female doctor called Sophia who gets the first clue to the mystery of the infectious disease, which was caused by an unknown virus in the different 3 places in America, She is working at the national research institute for infectious diseases and strangely has an déjà vu while seeing the DNA sequence data of the virus. Going back in memory, she remembers what happened when she visited Peru for a field trip with her colleagues at the lab in the university. Then she finds the telephone number of a person who she met during the trip and makes a phone call, but that conduct causes her death.

The main character of this story is Sophia’s husband, Jon Smith. He is an army doctor and also a staff of the same institute as her but is in England for some business when she dies. He is ambushed by thugs on his way home but narrowly escaped and ends up learning his beloved wife’s death when he gets to the institute. Being crushed with grief, he harbors suspicions about the ambush and the situation of her death, so he starts an investigation for some clues that she might have caught.
やがて、この感染症が人為的なものであり、史上稀にみる巨大な犯罪であることが明らかになります。しかも、背後にいる人物は財力があるばかりでなく、国家権力ともつながっているのでした。ただ独り立ち上がったジョンはやがて、ハッカーである親友マーティ、信頼できる百戦錬磨の傭兵ピーター、さらにはソフィアの妹でCIAのエージェントであるランディの協力を得て、見えない敵に立ち向かっていきます。このチームの連携と活躍が実に痛快で、さながらアクションムービーを見ているような気持になりました。
It is not long before the fact that this infectious disease has been caused by someone who is committing an unprecedented huge crime is uncovered. The one who pulls strings behind the crime has not only financial power but also strong connections with some influential politicians. Jon, who stands up determinedly against the criminal alone at first, soon gets cooperation from some people such as one of his close friends called Marty who is a hacker, a trustworthy guy called Peter who is a seasoned mercenary soldier, and Sophia’s sister called Randy who is an CIA agent, and they face the invisible enemies. Their teamwork and feats are so exhilarating that I felt as if I were watching an action movie.
この小説は、実際にアメリカでは2006年にドラマ化されたようです。また、このお話を第１巻として、ジョン・スミスとその仲間たちの活躍を描くカバート・ワンシリーズは１２巻まで刊行された模様。ただ、第２巻「カサンドラ・コンパクト」の出版後にロバート・ラドラムは無くなったとのこと。日本語訳はこの第２巻まで出版されているようです。
This novel was actually dramatized for television in America in 2006. Plus, starting with this novel as the first volume, a series called Covert One was published and it continued to the twelfth. However, Robert Ludlum passed away just after the second volume called ‘Cassandra Compact’ was published. The Japanese version of this series was also published but only the first and the second volumes seem to be available.
