久しぶりに洋楽にハマりました。ジョージ・エズラ、イギリス本国ではとっても人気があるそうです。イギリス人の友人ベンにおすすめされて、初めて聴いた曲は「ショットガン」でした。
I got into a foreign music after a long time. The singer is George Ezra, who is very popular in the UK. My friend Ben, an English guy, recommended me to listen to his music and the song I gave a try first was ‘Shotgun’.

1回聴いただけで好きになりました。こんなにキャッチーな洋楽は、自分にとって久しぶりでした。ショットガンとは車の助手席を意味しているとのこと。不思議な気がしますが、昔、日常で銃が必要だった時代に、助手席に銃を置いていたからでしょうか。イギリスでは10歳ぐらいの子どもでも知っている表現だそうです。冒頭の「Homegrown alligator, see you later」というのは、言葉遊びとしての「See you later, alligator」から来ているようです。日本人がよく言う「アイムソーリー、ヒゲソーリー」と同じようなノリですね。
Only a listen made me love it. It’s for the first time for me in years to listen to such a catchy foreign song. Shotgun means the passenger seat. It sounds a bit strange, but I can guess that people used to put a shotgun in the passenger seat when shotguns are necessary in daily life in the past. I heard that even a boy about ten years old knows this expression. The words at the beginning, ‘Homegrown alligator, see you later’ is from the play on words, ‘See you later, alligator’. It has the same taste as the play on words that Japanese people often says, ‘I’m sorry, hige so-ri’.
他の曲も聴きたくなって、この曲が収録されている彼の2ndアルバム「Staying at Tamara’s」（2018）をダウンロードしました。気持ちいいです。全部いいです。ジョージ・エズラの特徴である、年齢や容姿に似合わぬ大物感と野太い声に、気持ちよく浸れます。
I came to feel like listening to his other songs, so I downloaded his 2nd album ‘Staying at Tamara’s’ (2018), which includes ‘Shotgun’. It makes me feel good. All the tracks are so good. I get absorbed comfortably in his loud, hoarse voice, and his airs of big name despite his young age or appearance, which are characterisic of him.
日本のアーティストで似たようなタイプを考えたときに、真っ先に浮かんだのはあいみょんでした。性別は違うけれども、シンプルだけどキャッチーな楽曲、アルバムのクオリティの高さ、まだ若いのに漂う大物感など、比較できる要素が多くあります。生まれた年は、ジョージ・エズラが1993年、あいみょんが1995年と、世代的な近さもあります。
If I had to choose the same kind of artist in Japan, the first one came to mind was Aimyon. They are different in sex, but I can see many things in common between them, for example, the songs which are simple but so catchy, the albums of high quality, the atmosphere of a big name even though they are still young. As to the year of birth, George Ezra was born in 1993, and Aimyon was born in 1995, so I can say they are almost in the same generation.
ジョージ・エズラは、影響を受けたアーティストとしてボブ・ディランを挙げています。幅広い世代に受け入れられる理由がわかる気がします。ちなみにあいみょんが影響を受けたアーティストとして、フリッパーズ・ギターが挙げられているのが自分にとっては意外で、嬉しくなりました。
George mentioned Bob Dylan as an artist who affected him. I guess this is the very reason why he is accepted by unlimited generations. In this connection I may add that Aimyon mentioned Flippers Guitar as the artist she was affected by and I was surprised and also glad to hear that.
