物語の展開自体が、一つの奇跡のように思えます。俳優さん一人一人のよさが最大限に引き出されているのが、このドラマの魅力であることは、これまで述べてきたとおりですが、やはり一番大切なのは、ストーリーとその底流にある価値観です。そこにおいて、これほど成功しているお話も珍しいと思います。
The plots of this drama are somewhat miraculous for me. As I have mentioned so far, one of the good points of this drama is the fact that the attractiveness of each actor is drawn out so well, but what matters most is the story and the sense of value underlying the story. This drama is rather a rare case because it tremendously succeeded in that point
人生を終わらせるまでの11日間を心静かに過ごそうと思っていた喜多善男ですが、周囲の人間がそれを許しません。喜多善男は、自分が知らない事情のために、毎日誰かに殺されそうになるのでした。
Kita Yoshio was going to spend the 11 days peacefully before he put an end to his life, but the around him don’t allow him to do so. He is almost killed by somebody every day because of the reasons he doesn’t know.
長谷川リカ（栗山千明）が、善男の生命保険金を狙って殺し屋（温水洋一）を送り込んで失敗したことはすでに書きました。このとき止めに入ったのは、リカの恋人である矢代平太（松田龍平）でした。しかし、リカを救いたい余り、翌晩、夜道で善男にとどめを刺そうしたのは、その矢代平太だったのです。ナイフを振りかぶった彼に、「そうだ！」と無邪気な笑顔で振り向いた善男の手には、きな粉餅の袋が握られていました。子供の頃からの好物で、父親との思い出でもあるきな粉餅を差し出された平太は、偶然とは言えない何かを感じてしまうのでした。
I’ve already mentioned that Hasegawa Rika Kuriyama Chiaki) sent an hired killer trying to collect the Yoshio’s life insurance, and the person who interrupted it was her boyfriend Yashiro Heita. However, the next night, the very person who tried to kill Yoshio was Yashiro Heita. At the very moment he swung the knife over his head, Yoshio suddenly turned around saying, “Oh boy!” with an innocent smile and the thing in his hand was some kinako mochi (rice cake powdered with sweetened soybean flour) in a bag. Kinako mochi is Heita’s favorite and something reminds him of his father, so Heita felt something more than coincidence from it.
次の晩に善男を襲おうとしたのは、リカ自身でした。保険加入のお礼にと、コンサートのチケットを善男に渡したリカでしたが、その帰りの夜道を狙ってのことでした。しかし、ここでは突然現れた平太が、リカに罪を犯させまいと止めに入ったのでした。
The next day, another one who tried to kill Yoshio was Rika herself. She presented Yoshio a tickets for a concert as a mark of her appreciation for his taking out an life insurance, but her real intention was to stub him on his way home after the concert. However, Heita suddenly appeared to stop it because he didn’t want her to commit the murder.
お前らがヘタ打つと、こっちも迷惑すんだよ。
次の日には、保険金の話をリカから聞き出した闇金業者「あんしん円満リース」の連中が、白昼堂々と善男を車に押し込み、人気のない丘の上で善男を殺そうとします。このときには、善男の動きをマークしていた保険調査員、杉本マサルが刑事を装って善男を救ったのでした。
Then, the next day, the people from “Anshin Enman lease”, a loan shark company, ambushed Yoshio and pushed him into their car and took him up on a hill to murder him, the reason why they did so was that Rika asked it to them. This time, the one who saved Yoshio was Sugimoto Masaru, an insurance researcher, because he had traced Yoshio.

こうして、残りの日が２日となったところで、善男はついに、三波貴男（今井雅之）と対面します。それは、目を背け続けてきた真実と向き合う瞬間でもありました。善男との再会をにこやかに懐かしがる素振りの三波に対し、善男に同行した平太が「何事もなかったかのようにニコニコしやがって」と噛みつくと、三波は「この人はなぁ、とっくに知ってるんだよ！」と凄んでみせるのでした。みずほ（小西真奈美）と善男の結婚が保険金を狙った偽装結婚であった事実を包み隠さず語る三波を前にして、善男のもう一つの人格、ネガティヴ善男が現れます。優秀な心理学者だった三波はそれに気付き、「喜多さん、ネガティヴと向き合うんだ」と励まします。その結果、ネガティヴな部分も呑み込んで自身のものとした善男は、心配そうに近寄る平太を突き飛ばした挙句、「俺が生命保険に入らなくても、あんなにやさしくしてくれたのか！！」ともはや取り付く島もないのでした。
It was three days before he was going to kill himself that Yoshio finally met Minami Takao (Imai Masayuki) again. It was actually the moment to face the fact that he had been trying to avoid for a long time. Heita yelled, “Why, you dare smile as if there was nothing wrong”, to Minami because he was irritated with the attitude of Minami who amiably treated Yoshio like a close friend, and what Minami threateningly replied was this, “This man already knew the fact!”. Yoshio’s another personality called negative Yoshio appeared while Minami talked frankly about the fact that the faked marriage between Yoshio and Mizuho which was plotted in order to collect his life insurance. Minami, who was a outstanding psychologist, soon noticed it and encourage Yoshio saying, “Kita san, face the negative character”. Consequently, Yoshio combined the negative character with himself and he pushed Heita away, who got closer to Yoshio showing his anxiety, and then said, “You would have been so kind if I didn’t take out that insurance”.
何事もなかったかのようにニコニコしやがって！
お前は、この人のこと、何もわかっちゃいねえんだよ。
ほら！ ネガティヴと向き合うんだ！
お人好しの仮面の下で、抑えに抑えてきた感情が爆発する瞬間は、視聴者がいつの間にか無意識に待ち続けたもののように思えます。そして、そうなるように仕向ける展開のうまさを思うと本当にワクワクしてしまいます。
The moment when Yoshio explodes his feelings that he has contained under his mask of good-natured guy for a long time was something the audience have waited for. I’m really exhilarated when I come to think of the plot that leads us like this.
ああそうだよ。全部知ってたさ。
俺が生命保険に入らなくても、あんなにやさしくしてくれたのか？
喜多さん・・・。 すまなかった。
こうして喜多善男は行方をくらますのですが、その一方で、みずほは夫の死亡事故について、あらぬ疑いをかけられ、ついには警察に逮捕されてしまいます。この顛末について次回は紹介します。
After that, Kita yoshio went into hiding. In the meantime, Mizuho was suspected of privity to her husband’s death caused by a water accident and finally arrested by the police. I’m going to talk about this next time.
