歴史小説の楽しみ：司馬遼太郎著「竜馬がゆく」（第3巻） The Delights of Historical Novels: ‘Ryoma ga Yuku’ by Shiba Ryotaro (the third volume)

　土佐藩を脱藩して路銀もないまま江戸にもどる竜馬の姿はまだまだ頼りないのですが、この間、清川八郎と道中をともにします。のちに新選組の立ち上げにもかかわり、幕末の騒乱の引き金にもなる人物と、坂本竜馬との間にこのような交わりが本当にあったかはわかりません。こうしたエビソードを巧みに織り込むのが司馬遼太郎さんの作家としての上手さでしょうか。

　He left Tosa domain to go to Edo without money for the trip and he looked whishy-washy, but he was accompanied by Kiyokawa Hachiro in the middle of the trip. Kiyokawa is the guy who has something to do with the establishment of Shinsengumi afterward to cause the turmoil at the end of the Edo era, and I’m not sure about whether Sakamoto Ryoma associated with such a person. Shiba Ryotaro is good at weaving these kinds of episodes into the plot and this shows his great skills as an author.

「浪人となった竜馬は、幕府の要職にある勝海舟と運命的な出会いをする。勝との触れ合いによって、かれはどの勤王の志士ともちがう独自の道を歩き始めた。生麦事件など攘夷熱の高まる中で、竜馬は逆に日本は開国して、海外と交易しなければならない、とひそかに考える。そのためにこそ幕府を倒さなければならないのだ、とも。」

“It was an fateful encounter between Ryoma, who has become a ronin, and Katsu Kaishu, a senior official of Tokugawa shogunate. He started his unique career which is totally different from that of other royalists through associating with Katsu. There are a lot of events in which patriots try to expel foreigners like Namamugi Jiken but Ryoma secretly harbors an idea that Japan has to be opened to the world to trade with other nations. He also thinks that the Shogunate must be overthrown to realize the idea.”

　竜馬の目を開かせたのはやはり勝海舟なのでしょう。幕府に居ながらにして、日本の置かれている状況と幕府の立ち位置を俯瞰できる人物です。物語では、竜馬は、千葉道場の千葉重太郎とともに勝を斬るために勝の家を訪れます。ところが斬るどころか、勝のいう航海貿易論に魅せられた竜馬はその場で勝の弟子になってしまいます。竜馬のことを気に入った勝は、竜馬を築地の軍艦操練所へと連れて行き、竜馬は未公認の聴講生のようになるのでした。

　Katsu Kaishu must have been the very person who opened Ryoma’s eyes to what was happening in the world. Even though he was an senior official of the shogunate, he could take a bird’s-eye view of what was happening and the position of the shogunate at the time. In the story, Ryoma visits Katsu’s place with Chiba Jyutaro to slay Katsu. Far from slaying Katsu, he becomes a pupil of him on the spot after hearing the idea of opening Japan to trade with foreign countries. Katsu likes Ryoma so he takes him to the battleship training center in Tsukiji and Ryoma becomes an irregular student there.

　第3巻の終わりの方では、のちに妻となるおりょうとの出会いが描かれます。大まかな史実を追う楽しさに加え、こうした明らかな創作部分が、この物語をますます面白くしています。

　At the end of the third volume, there is a scene where Ryoma meets Oryo, who will become his wife later. In addition to a delight of tracing the outline of the history, those fictional parts make this story more enjoyable.

　諸流試合で優勝するほどに剣術の道を究める竜馬ですが、まだ時勢の外に居て自分の行き方を定めずにいます。

　Ryoma had improved as a swordsman to the extent that he won a tournament which featured swordsmen from various schools, even so he was out-of-date and didn’t know what to do.

　第２巻の裏表紙に書かれているあらすじは、次の通りです。

　The summary written on the back cover is as follows.

　「黒船の出現以来、猛然と沸き上がっていた勤王・攘夷の勢力と、巻き返しを図る幕府との抗争は次第に激化してきた。先進の薩摩、長州に遅れまいと、固陋な土佐藩でクーデターを起こし、藩ぐるみ勤王化して天下へ押し出そうとする武市半平太のやり方に、限界を感じた坂本竜馬は、さらに大きな飛躍を求めて、ついに脱藩を決意した。」

　“The conflict between the upsurging campaign to restore the emperor expelling the foreigners and the shogunate aiming at a recovery has been intensifying gradually. Takechi Hanpeita, a retainer of Tosa domain, tries to get his conservative domain involved in the campaign by a coup to catch up with those advanced domains such as Satsuma and Choshu. However, Ryoma is skeptical of Takechi’s way so he finally determines to leave his clan to go out into the world.”

　一人ぼんやりしている坂本龍馬の周囲では、親友である武市半平太や、のちに陸援隊を起こす中岡慎太郎らが風雲の中へと身を乗り出していきます。竜馬にしても、自身が望んだことではないながら、尊王攘夷に関わる密書を携えた公卿（くげ）侍を護衛することになったり、ふと思い立って蘭学を学ぼうと高知城下の蘭学者のもとを訪れたりして自分なりに見識を広げようとします。

　Ryoma is still careless but some people around him such as Takechi Hanpeita, a close friend of him, Nakaoka Shintaro, who will establish a revolutionary army called Rikuentai, get involved in the critical situation. On the other hand, Ryoma unintentionally ends up guarding a aristocratic swordsman, who carries a secret message related to the campaign, then he visits a scholar in Kochi castle town to learn Western science because he wants to form his own opinion.

　しかし、この第2巻での面白みはやはり、一人の若者として、青春を生きる竜馬の姿でしょう。そこには数人の女性も関わっています。1人は、桶町千葉道場の娘さな子、そして、土佐藩の上士の娘お田鶴様、さらには、竜馬が旅の途中で立ち寄った居酒屋を切り盛りするお初といった女性たちが登場しますが、いずれも魅力的で、物語に華やかな彩を添えています。このあたり、司馬遼太郎さんは意外なほどに、男女の機微を描くのが巧みで惹き込まれます。この本の魅力の一つといっていいと思います。

　In my opinion, what is the most interesting part of the second volume is how the days of Ryoma’s youth going and a couple of girls appear there. One girl is Sanako, a daughter of the headmaster of Chiba kendo school in Okemachi, another is Otazu, a daughter from a high-ranking retainer of Tosa domain, and the other is Ohatsu, the hostess of a tavern where Ryoma stops at during his trip, and each one of them is so attractive that they add colorfulness to the story. Shiba Ryotaro is unexpectedly good at describing subtleties of lovers so you may be enthralled by that. I think such things are one of the best parts of this book.

歴史小説の楽しみ：司馬遼太郎著「竜馬がゆく」（第一巻） The Delights of Historical Novels: ‘Ryoma ga Yuku’ by Shiba Ryotaro (the first volume)

　文庫本の裏表紙に書いてある、あの内容紹介というのは、短いながらもそれを書く人はきっと渾身の努力で書いているのに違いありません。あれで掻き立てられる読みたい気持ちは、それ自体が喜びといっていいものです。

　The summery on the back cover of a paperback is quite short but I have a feeling that it requires great efforts to make the summary attractive enough. I can say that it is delightful to be intrigued by that summary.  

　「竜馬がゆく」第1巻の裏表紙に書かれているあらすじは、以下の様になっています。

　The summary on the back of the first volume of ‘Ryoma ga Yukiu’ is as follows.

　『「薩長連合、大政奉還、あれァ、ぜんぶ竜馬一人がやったことさ」と、勝海舟はいった。坂本龍馬は幕末維新史上の奇蹟といわれる。かれは土佐の郷士の次男坊にすぎず、しかも浪人の身でありながらこの大動乱期に卓抜した仕事をなしえた。竜馬の劇的な生涯を中心に、同じ時代をひたむきに生きた若者たちを描く長編小説全八冊。』

　“’Both the Satsuma -Choshu Alliance and the return of political power to the Emperor by the Tokugawa shogunate were fixed by Ryoma alone’, Katsu Kaishu said. It is often said that Sakamoto Ryoma is a historical miracle at the end of the Edo era. He was born as the second child in a family of a country samurai in the Tosa domain, plus he was just a ronin but he achieved tremendous tasks. This is a book in eight volumes and it depicts mainly the dramatic life of Ryoma and the other young guys who were dedicated to their purpose in the same era as him. “

　第１巻では、坂本竜馬の江戸での剣術修行中の出来事が描かれていきます。そこで浮き彫りになるのは、竜馬の人となりと、その形成に関わる人々の姿です。のちに幕末の風雲の中で凄まじい働きをすることになる竜馬ですが、第1巻での彼は、どちらかと言えばぼんやりしていて、世の中のことはおろか、まだ自分が何者かもわかっていない様子です。ただ剣術については、竜馬は天才的で、諸流試合で優勝するほどの腕前になっていきます。この小説の面白さは、一面、一人の若者の成長物語としての面白さであり、この第1巻では、それを存分に楽しむことができます。司馬遼太郎さんの語り口には妙な可笑しみがあって、時々声を上げて笑ってしまう場面すらあります。

　In the first volume, what is mainly described is the events that happened while Ryoma practiced swordsmanship in Edo. You can clearly understand what he was like and how people affected him. Although he would incredibly work hard later in a critical situation at the end of the Edo era, he was still somehow careless and didn’t know anything about not only what happened in the world but also his own purpose in the first volume. Even so, he was so talented as a swordsman that he won a tournament which featured swordsmen from various schools. One of the interesting points of this story is to see how a young guy grows up and you can enjoy it to your heart’s content in the first volume. Shiba Ryotaro’s style is quite humorous so I sometimes laugh out loud.

　この間の出来事として、黒船の来航があり、世の中が尊王攘夷へと動いていく様子が明快に書かれます。そこでは、竜馬が黒船を観に行き、山中で長州藩の桂小五郎と出会う、大変興味深いエピソードが描かれるのですが、それが史実なのかどうかはわかりません。まだ一介の剣士に過ぎない竜馬のことをややもどかしく思いながら、物語は第2巻へと進みます。

　In the meantime, American battle ships visited these shores and the campaign to restore the emperor and expel the foreigners began. Shiba wrote about an interesting episode of the first encounter between Ryoma and Katsura Kogoro from Choshu in a mountain as Ryoma was going to see the battle ships, but I’m not sure whether this episode is true or not. Keeping readers a bit frustrated by Ryoma who is still just a swordsman, the story goes into the second volume.

　主人公の魅力というのは、物語の面白さを決定づける大きな要素に違いありません。ときには、読み終わるのが切なくなるくらい、主人公に感情移入してしまうことがあります。ましてや、それが歴史上に実在した人物であり、しかも非業の死を遂げると知りながら読むとしたら、思い入れは一層深くなるものです。

　The fascination of the protagonist must be main factor to make the story interesting. I sometimes empathize with the hero of a story to the extent that I feel a wistful pang when I finish the book. I all the more feel that way if the main character is a real historical figure and I also know he died by violence.

 　司馬遼太郎さんの「竜馬がゆく」（全8巻）を初めて読んだのは、もう大人になってからでした。歴史小説にそんなに興味はなく、それまでに読んだことがあったのは吉川英治さんの「宮本武蔵」だけでした。そもそも歴史上、坂本竜馬という人が何をした人物か、全く知りませんでした。高校の社会は日本史でしたが、ただ事実の羅列でしかない教科書にはたしか、「薩長同盟を実現した」程度の記述しかなかったように思います。そこからは、どんな人物像も浮かんでくるはずがありません。

　It was not until I grew up that I first read the book called ‘Ryoma ga Yuku’, which has eight volumes, written by Shiba Ryotaro. I was not so interested in historical novels at that time and the only one I had read till then was ‘Miyamoto Musashi’ by Yoshikawa Eiji. In the first place, I didn’t know about what role Sakamoto Ryoma played in the history. I took a class in history in high school and I had an impression that all the description of him I saw in the textbook, which was a mere list of facts, was probably, ’He achieved the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance’. It is impossible to imagine what he was like from it.

　この物語は、次のように始まります。

　The beginning of this story is as follows.

　『「小嬢（こいと）さまよ」

　と、源おんちゃんが、この日のあさ、坂本家の三女の乙女の部屋の前にはいつくばり、芝居もどきの神妙さで申しあげたものであった。

　「なんです」

　と、乙女がうつむいて答えた。手もとが針仕事でいそがしい。あすという日は、この屋敷の末っ子の竜馬が、江戸へ剣術修行に旅立つ。』

　“’my lady!’, uncle Gen theatrically said with some respect, while getting down on his hands and knees in front of the room of Otome, Sakamoto’s third daughter. ‘What happened’, Otome replied without looking up. She was busy sewing. Ryoma, the youngest child of her family, is going to leave for Edo to practice his swordsmanship tomorrow.”

　何気ない日常から書き起こすあたりに、司馬遼太郎さんのストーリーテリングの上手さが際立ちます。1ページ読んだときには、もう夢中になっていました。読み進むにつれ、人生観が変わるほどの影響を受けました。これまでにもう何度読み返したかしれません。しばらく、この「竜馬がゆく」の魅力について考えてみたいと思います。

　Shiba Ryotaro starts this story with a scene in ordinary life, and that’s why I feel Shiba Ryotaro was a great storyteller. I was already exhilarated enough after reading only one page. Reading this book even changed my outlook on life. I don’t remember how many times I read through this book. I’m going to think about the charm of this book for a while.

「マジっすか」：草彅剛さん 日本アカデミー賞最優秀主演男優賞受賞 What He Said in Spite of himself was‘Really?’: Kusanagi Tsuyoshi won Japan Academy Film Prize for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

　快挙です。「日本映画人による日本映画人のための日本映画の祭典」である日本アカデミー賞において、最優秀主演男優賞を草彅剛さんが受賞しました。そして、映画「ミッドナイトスワン」自体も最優秀作品賞に選ばれました。

　It’s a splendid feat. Kusanagi Tsuyoshi was awarded the Prize for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in the Japan Academy Film Prize ceremony, which is often called “A film festival in Japan for people in Japan film industry by people in Japan film industry”. Plus, the movie starring Kusanagi called ‘Midnight Swan’ also won the Prize for Picture of the Year.

　映画が成功したかどうかの尺度にはいろいろあると思います。一番に思い浮かぶのはやはり興行収入でしょう。Wikiでみる限り、「ミッドナイトスワン」の興行収入は、7.1億円です。優秀作品賞に選ばれた他の映画についてわかる範囲でいうと、「浅田家！」12.1億円、「罪の声」12.2億円、そして「糸」は22.7億円となっています。全国の上映館数を見ると、「ミッドナイトスワン」は151館です。他の映画はいずれも300館を超えており、「ミッドナイトスワン」の倍以上の映画館で公開されています。このことから、この受賞がいかに快挙であるか実感できます。

　There are various kinds of standards for estimating how successful a movie is. The first thing that comes in mind is the box office revenue for sure. According to Wikipedia, ‘Midnight Swan’ earned about 710 million yen. As for other nominees for Picture of the Year, as far as I can tell, the box office income of each movie is as follows, 1.21 billion yen for ‘Asadake!’, 1.22 billion yen for ‘Tsumi no Koe’, and 2.27 billion yen for ‘Ito’.  Turning now to the number of movie theaters which played the movies all over the country, ‘Midnight Swan’ was played at 151 theaters, whereas others are played at over 300 theaters, over two times bigger than ‘Midnight Swan’. These facts make me realize how great these awards are.

　最優秀主演男優賞受賞後のコメントで、草彅剛さんの第一声は、「マジっすか」でした。上の数字を考えると、この言葉は決してふざけたものではないことが分かります。大手ではない配給会社、宣伝の機会の圧倒的な少なさを考えると、スタート地点ですでに不利であったことは明確です。何より嬉しいのは、この日本アカデミー賞は映画関係者により選ばれる賞だということです。しがらみも忖度も無い中でのこの受賞は、一人の俳優として、真の才能が認められた証だと思います。

　The first word he said after learning he won the prize was, ‘really?’. It doesn’t sound strange when I come to think of the numbers I mentioned above. This movie was originally disadvantaged at the starting line because the distribution company is small and they have fewer opportunities to advertise this movie. What I feel glad most is the fact that every prize in this Japan Academy Awards is voted by people in the film industry. This prize is free of any kinds of shackles or unnecessary concern for someone’s interest and that’s why I think he was proved to be a great actor by this award.

70年代ソウルの良曲：ザ・トランプス「Hold Back The Night」 A Good Soul Music in the '70s: ‘Hold Back the Night’ by Trammps

　「U.S. Black Disk Guide」を片手に日々、サブスクでソウル・ミュージックを掘り返しています。現在、第6章「THE‘70s VOCAL GROUPS」の半ばあたりです。この章はモータウンをはじめとするデトロイト発のソウルから始まり、いわゆるフィリー・ダンサーと呼ばれるフィラデルフィア発の洗練されたソウルへと向かいます。このフィリー・ソウルであらためていいな、と思った曲があります。ザ・トランプスの「Hold Back The Night」です。

　I search music streaming services for good soul numbers referring to the book called ‘U.S. Black Disk Guide’. Now I’m at the middle of the 6^th chapter, ‘THE‘70s VOCAL GROUPS’. This chapter starts with Motown Label and the others from Detroit then it takes up Philly soul, which sounds quite sophisticated. There is a Philly soul number which made me feel good again. The title of the song is ‘Hold Back the Night’ by the Trammps.

　ストリングスやホーンの使い方にフィリー・ソウルの響きがありますが、やり過ぎない感じが好ましいです。スリー・ディグリーズあたりの音を期待した人にはちょっと肩透かしな曲かもしれません。

　I believe you can see the essence of Philly soul from the sounds of the strings and the horns in this song even though they are pleasantly subdued. I guess someone who expected it to be like The Three Degrees’ songs would be a little bit disappointed.  　

　この曲は1975年のアルバム「The Legendary Zing Album」に収録されています。1曲目の「Penguin at the Big Apple / Zing Went the Strings of My Heart」は80年代にテレビのクイズ番組でテーマ曲に使われたこともあるので知っている人も多いと思います。70年代後半に吹き荒れるディスコサウンドに比べて、このあたりの音がかえって新鮮で心地よく響きます。。

　This song is from their 1975 album called ‘The Legendary Zing Album’. I think that the first track called ‘Penguin at the Big Apple / Zing Went the Strings of My Heart’ must be famous because it was the theme song of a TV quiz show in the ‘80s. Compared to Disco music, which became all the rage in the late ‘70s, I have a feeling that Philly soul numbers sound like more fresher and more soothing for many people.

読んだらやっぱりすごかった：漫画「鬼滅の刃」 Once I started reading, I realized how good it was: The series of comic books called ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer)’

　コミックス全23巻一気に読みました。こんなに面白いもの、よく今まで読まずにいれたものです。以前、「呪術廻戦」の感想の際に、「『鬼滅の刃』にはノリ損ねた」とか書いていました。情けないです。恥ずかしいです。今さらですが、本当に面白い漫画です。

　I read through 23 volumes of this comic book in one day. I wonder how I could have dispensed with such an interesting story before. I once wrote, “I was not so interested in the poplar animation called ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba” in an article about ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ before. It’s a shame. I’m embarrassed now. After all this time I realized this comic book was really enjoyable.

　うかつにあらすじなど書けません。ネタバレは絶対に禁止の作品です。意外性のある展開に、最後の最後までグイグイ惹き込まれます。面白さはむしろ後半にかけてより加速します。物語の焦点が、鬼殺隊の「柱」と呼ばれる剣士たちに移ってからが、俄然ワクワクしました。設定だけを聞いて子どもっぽいと思っている方、また、自分のように中途半端にアニメを観て判断していた方には、まず漫画を読むことを、心の底からお勧めします。

　I shouldn’t write the summary of the story carelessly. It spoils the fun of this comic book to let you know how it goes. You’ll be fascinated by the unpredictable plots till the end of the story. I was exhilarated especially when the swordsmen called ‘Hashiras’, who are leading members of Demon Slayers, appeared and the focus of the story shifted toward them. I sincerely recommend some people, who consider this comic is childish, or the others, who halfway watched the animation like me, to read this comic book first.

　やっぱり世間が騒ぐものには、それだけの価値があるとあらためて思い知らされます。「君の名は」の時もそうでした。世の中のブームがとっくに収まった頃に観て、一人で涙ぐみ、あふれる感動をやかましく言い立てては、ひんしゅくを買っていました。

　これからもきっと繰り返すことでしょう。

　This time I realized again that something popular with people is surely good. I felt that way when I watched the animation film called ‘Kimi no Na wa’. I watched it after the boom came to an end and moved to tears alone, then I told anyone around me how good it was and ended up being frowned at by them.

　I’m sure I’ll be the same as ever.
