　買ってからもう25年になります。ずいぶん長い間、本棚に眠らせていましたが、最近になって、また手に取る機会が増えました。1994年に出版されたこの本は、ソウル・ミュージックのガイドブックとして、この上なく有用な1冊です。

　It’s been 25 years since I bought this book. I’ve left it gathering dust on the shelf for a long time, but I often take it in my hand recently. This book released in 1994 is so useful as a guidebook for soul music. 

U.S.ブラック・ディスク・ガイド

 　900枚を超えるソウル・ミュージックのアルバムを取り上げているこの本は、基本的に年代別の、さらにはジャンルにも配慮した、とても分かりやすい構成になっています。

　This book which takes up over 900 disks of soul music is so useful because it has a structure basically arranged in chronological order, but also considering genres, so it is quite easy to understand.

　「THE PIONEERS-ソウルのパイオニアたち」と題した第1章で初めに取り上げられているのは、サム・クックの「Twistin’ The Night Away」です。ポップスと呼びたいほど、キャッチーでこの上なく聴きやすいサム・クックの楽曲ですが、解説を読むと、ソウル・ミュージックとして改めて捉えなおすことができます。この本のいいところは、単なるアルバム紹介ではなく、そのアーティストがソウル・ミュージックの歴史上に果たした役割まで解説していることです。

　The first chapter titled ‘The Soul Music Pioneers’ takes up ‘Twistin’ The Night Away’ by Sam Cooke for the first disk. His numbers are so catchy and easy for me that you may somehow want to call them pop music, but once you read this book, you can enjoy them as soul music for sure. One of the good points of this book is that it is not just an album guide but also explain the role of the musician in the soul music history.

　今になってまた手に取るようになった理由は、ずばりサブスクです。1995年にこの本を買った頃は、拾い読みして、聴きたいものを買ったり、レンタルしたりしていました。当時は、地方にいる限り入手しづらい音源も多くて十分に活用できませんでした。しかし、今は聴こうと思えば大抵の音源はサブスクですぐに聴けるいい時代です。もう容赦なく検索しまくって、気に入ったものをプレイリストにぽいぽい入れています。サブスクにもない音源もあって、それはそれで楽しみだったりします。

　The reason why I take up it in my hand recently is, in short, music streaming services. When I bought this book, in 1995, I just skipped through it and tried to buy or rent some CDs that I was interested in. In fact, there were CDs that were difficult to get because I lived in the countryside so couldn’t make full use of the book at that time. However, we live in a great era where we can listen to almost any songs if we want due to music streaming services. I search for a lot of songs without hesitation to put my favorite ones into playlists. There are some songs that are not available in on the services, but I’m somehow not disappointed by it.  

　現在、この本は中古でしか入手できないようです。アマゾンでは3800円程度で購入できる模様。もともとの定価は2800円だったので1000円ほど高くなっています。それだけの価値はあると思います。

　As of now, you can only buy this book second-hand. I checked Amazon and I found it being sold for about 3800 yen. The original price was 2800 yen at that time, so the current price is higher than that by 1000 yen. I believe it is worth buying.

　お茶の間のセットでの小芝居から始まったこの配信は、まさにエンターテインメントとは何かを改めて思い知らされるものでした。

　This streaming, which started with playacting in a living room setting, made me realize what entertainment should be like.

　言うまでもありませんが、音楽で楽しませるという点で、これほど完成しているグループも稀有と言っていいでしょう。演奏の巧みさ、歌詞の良さ、編曲の上手さ、そして歌声の素晴らしさと、どれをとっても極上の満足感を与えてくれます。しかもコンサートでは、素晴らしいゲストミュージシャンを招いて、ますます完成度を高めてきます。

　It goes without saying that they are one of the best rock bands in terms of entertaining with playing music. They always perfectly satisfy an audience with, for example, skillful performances, good lyrics, exquisite arrangements, and their wonderful singing voices. On top of that, they invite some great musicians to make the degree of perfection in performance even higher.   

　自分が一番すごいと思うのはやっぱり歌詞です。韻の踏み方や、言葉の選び方に心奪われるのはもちろんですが、きわどい歌詞を書かせたら桑田佳祐さんの右に出る人はいません。「LOVE AFFAIR～秘密のデート」はもうタイトルから不倫を宣言しています。そんなきわどい曲でも、奥さんの原由子さんが笑顔でコーラスを入れている姿に、本当の大人の女性の色気を感じてワクワクするのは自分だけでしょうか。

 　What I’m impressed about them most is the lyrics. Needless to say, the way of matching rhyming words or the well-chosen words are so fascinating, plus there is no one to rival Kuwata Keisuke, when it comes to writing a kind of risque lyrics. The title of the song called ‘LOVE AFFAIR ～ Himitsu no Date’ already shows it’s about an illicit love without shame. I wonder whether I’m the only person who feels excited to find Hara Yuko, the wife of Kuwata Keisuke and also the keyboardist of the band, really sexy when she is singing in chorus even in a risque song like that.

　もう、それで十分と言いたいところですが、このバンドは、オーディエンスを喜ばすためなら、一切手を抜きません。今回は会場に観客は入っていませんでしたが、いちいち歓声が上がる演出がなされ、ライブ感を出してきます。終盤のエロティカ・セブンからはランジェリー姿のダンサーまで登場します。そして最後は、やっぱりお茶の間での小芝居で楽しませてくれます。エンディングの映像は、全国6か所での打ち上げ花火でした。

　With all the things I mentioned above, they’ve already done enough to entertain the audience, but actually they try to please them even more. This time there wasn’t any audience in the venue, but you can hear the cheers so you may feel as if there is an audience there. The song called ‘Erotica Seven’, which is sung in the latter half of the concert featured some dancers in their lingerie. And at the end, sure enough, they playact in the living room setting again. They even show you videos of fireworks held in 6 different places in Japan after the concert. 

 　アリーナいっぱいにダンサーを配した「マンピーのG★SPOT」で年が明けたとき、まだバブル時代にいるような錯覚を覚えました。サザンのコンサートにだけは、あの狂騒感がたしかに残っています。これで4500円というのは破格の安さです。しかもアーカイブは、あと3日、1月7日21：30まで残されています。

　I had a feeling as if I was still in the bubble era when I greeted the New Year watching them playing the song called ‘Manpi no G★spot’ featuring a lot of dancers on the floor. The frenzied atmosphere at that time still remains only in their concert for sure. I have a feeling that 4500 yen, the ticket fee, is absurdly low for this content. Plus, you can watch it until 21:30, January 7^th.

　こんな新年の迎え方も縁起がいいように思います。大晦日の夜10：00から始まったサザンオールスターズの年越しライブは、2時間半にわたるものでした。幸せなことに、2021年の幕開けは、25曲もの曲を披露したこのライブを視聴しながら迎えることになりました。セトリについてはあえて書きません。ただ、いくつかの曲について触れながら、サザンオールスターズの魅力について、改めて感じたことを綴りたいと思います。

　It may be auspicious to start the New Year that way. The New Year’s Eve concert by Southern All Stars started at 10:00 p.m. and they performed for about two and a half hours. Fortunately I greeted the new year while watching their live streaming in which they performed 25 numbers. I won’t write about the set list. But allow me to mention some songs to write about the attractiveness of Southern All Stars.   

　サザンのファンという人は多いと思います。自分自身は、未だかつて、サザンのファンだったことはありません。なぜならメンバーの名前さえうろ覚えだからです。ただサザンの歌は大好きで、ほとんどの曲は聴いています。このバンドのすごさは、相当数のファンに加え、その周辺に自分のようなファン予備軍が無数にいることだと思います。

　I suppose there are a large number of fans of this band. I can’t say I’ve ever been a big fan of them. I don’t even remember exactly the name of the members. However, I really love their songs and I know almost all of them. What impresses me most about them is the fact that they attract so many people like me in addition to a considerable number of their big fans.

　1曲目は「2人だけのパーティ」でした。この曲を聴いたのは、いつ以来なのか覚えてもいません。タイトルも忘れていたくらいです。なのに口ずさめます。懐かしさが込み上げます。きっと十代の頃にこの曲が収録されているアルバム「タイニイ・バブルス」（1980年リリース）を聴いていたのでしょう。ライブの進行に連れ、このバンドの楽曲が自分の人生にどれだけリンクしているか、改めて思い知らされました。サザンの曲を聴いて、いろんな場面とその時の想いが蘇ってくる人は多いに違いありません。それは、甘酸っぱい感情だったり、ほろ苦い思い出だったりすると思います。男女を問わず、今の成人の多くの方々の人生に、彼らの楽曲がどれだけクロスオーバーしているかをふと考え、少し気が遠くなるのを覚えました。

　The first number was ‘Futaridake no Party’. I don’t remember when I last heard this song. I didn’t even remember the title of it. Even so, somehow I could sing it. I even felt nostalgia. I must have been listening to the album called ‘Tiny Bubbles’ which contains this song when I was a teenager, I don’t remember well though. As the concert went on, I realized again how their songs have something to do with my life. I’m certain that their songs remind so many people of various scenes and the feelings they had at those moments. Some of them may be sweet, and some others may be bitter. I was a bit overwhelmed by the idea that their songs have affected so many lives of grown-ups regardless of gender.

正月休みの楽しみ：TVアニメ「呪術廻戦」 One Thing I’m Looking Forward to During the New Year Holidays: A TV animation called ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’

　鬼滅にはノリ損ねました。映画公開の前にアマゾンプライムビデオでアニメを観始めてはみました。たしかに面白くて、10話ほどは観たのですが、そのあたりでなんとなく観るのをやめてしまいました。もともとアニメや漫画は大好きで、小学4年生から高校卒業までは少年ジャンプを1号も欠かさず買っていたクチです。その頃の感性を失ってしまったのかと、自分にがっかりしていました。

　I was not so interested in the poplar animation called ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba’. I tried to watch the series on Amazon Prime Video before the release of its movie version. I found them really enjoyable soon enough so I watched almost 10 episodes or so, but I somehow didn’t continue after that. I originally like animations or cartoons so much that I had never missed only a issue of Shonen Jump, a weekly manga magazine, from when I was in the fourth grade until when I graduate high school. I was disappointed that I lost my sensitivity.

TVアニメ『呪術廻戦』PV第1弾  

　でも、今度はノレています。今、ポスト鬼滅として人気のアニメ「呪術廻戦」、めちゃくちゃ面白いです。毎週金曜日にテレビで放送されていますが、翌日の土曜日にはアマゾンプライムビデオでも視聴できるようになっています。以下は公式サイトからのあらすじの引用です。

　However, there’s one animation that makes me enthralled now. The animation called ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’, which is becoming popular as post-Kimetsu, is really enjoyable. It is not only broadcast every Friday but also uploaded to Amazon Prime Video every Saturday. The following is a citation from the official HP of it.    

　「並みはずれた身体能力を持つ高校生・虎杖悠仁。祖父が死んだ夜に呪術高専一年の伏黒 恵と出会う。彼は、虎杖の持つ“呪物”を回収しに来たというが、ちょうどその“呪物”は虎杖の先輩らによって封印が解かれていた。“呪物”が引き寄せた、呪いの化け物に襲われる先輩たち。そこに虎杖と伏黒が駆けつける……。」

　"Itadori Yuji, a high school student, has an unnatural physical ability. He meets Hushiguro Megumi, a freshman in a technical college called Jujutsu Technical College, on the evening of the day when Yuji’s grandfather has passed away. Megumi says that he came to collect the ‘cursed charm talisman’, which Itadori owns, and it was at that point that the Itadori’s seniors have just unsealed the talisman. The seniors end up being attacked by a cursed monster which is summoned by the talisman. Then Itadori and Hushiguro arrive there......."

　祖父が悠仁に残した遺言は、「お前は強いから、人を助けろ」、そして「人に囲まれて死ぬんだ」というものでした。「呪物」をきっかけに呪術師としての力に開眼した悠仁は、都立呪術高専に入学し、祖父の言葉通り、自分が関わる人々を呪いから救うために呪霊と戦うことになります。このあたりの設定の面白さに加え、小気味よい展開の速さにぐいぐいと惹き込まれていきます。

　What Itadori’s grandfather said just before dying were, “You are strong so you have to save people”, and “Die surrounded by people”. The talisman made Itadori develop his ability as a sorcerer and he decided to enter the Tokyo Metropolitan Jyujyutsu Technical College to fight against curst monsters trying to save people around him as his grandfather had told him. In addition to those settings intriguing, the delightfully fast development of the story makes me enthralled.

　漫画で学んだ、大切な価値観て、けっこうあります。特に、男らしさとは何かを少年漫画で学んだ男子は多いと思います。鬼滅の刃もそうですが、この呪術廻戦も大切な価値観に下支えされた作品のようです。

　I have a feeling that I learned important senses of values through reading manga. I suppose a lot of men particularly learn what a man should behave through reading manga designed for boys. This manga ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ seems to be based on the important senses of values as ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba’ is.

　この正月休みにハマり決定です。まだ観られていない方はぜひ。

　I’ll be into it during the New Year’s holidays. I recommend you to give it a try if you haven’t.

　まだ余韻が醒めません。テレビで観てこんなですから、会場だったらどんだけだったでしょう。

 　I still feel excited after the live streaming. Considering I was impressed so much by just watching TV, I can’t imagine how much I would have been impressed if I were there.

　まずは、セットを含めたステージングに圧倒されました。ステージ上の構築物はひな壇と呼ぶのがためらわれるような規模のものでした。それだけでステージ上の動きはよりダイナミックになります。

　First of all I was overwhelmed by the staging including the stage set. What was built on the stage was so huge that I hesitate to call it a tiered platform. That was effective enough for making their performance dynamic even more.

　今回は、3人のゲストが登場しました。まずはEBINOMICSのソウルフルな歌声の主、オリヴィアさん、そして、吉澤嘉代子さん、たむらぱんさんです。自分が大好きな吉澤嘉代子さんが出ただけでもう大喜びでしたが、「曇天」、「ねえ中学生」、「面皰」の3曲でコラボしたのには驚きました。たむらぱんさんはこの公演の3日間全てに出演されたとのこと。今回は「大人はわかってくれない」、「ポップコーントーン」、そして新曲「イエローライト」でともに歌っておられました。

　They had 3 guests this time. the first one was Olivia, a singer whose soulful scat can be heard in Ebichu’s song called EBINOMICS, then Yoshizawa Kayoko, and the last one was Tamurapan. I was enthralled by the mere fact that Yoshizawa, one of my favorite artists, appeared, and on top of that, they collaborated in three songs, ‘Donten’, ‘Ne Chugakusei’, and ‘Nikibi’ so I was surprised. As for Tamurapan, showed up on all three performances. She joined in three songs, ‘Otona wa Wakattekurenai’, ‘Pop Corn Tone’, and the latest one called ‘Yellow Lights’ this time.

   　エビ中ガールズバンドのパフォーマンスも見事でした。ノイジーなギターから始まったebitureでもう、生バンドのよさを魅せ付けていました。

　The exquisite performance by Ebichu Girls Band was also impressive. The opening tune called ‘ebiture’ was started with the noisy guitar sound and I was already fascinated by the power of the performance live at this point.

　そして、本人たちの歌とダンスときたら、圧巻という以外ありません。2時間半近い公演時間で、MCは少なめに、24曲もの楽曲を披露していました。このパワーはどこからくるのでしょう。春ツアーの告知もありました。「ベスト・アット・ザ・モーメント・シリーズ・６ヴォイシズ」と題したツアーになる模様。「6人の歌声」です。5人でのパフォーマンスでこの感動ですから、安本さんがいたらと思うと想像を絶します。

　When it comes to the performance by Ebichu themselves this time, I can call it overwhelming. They performed for about two and a half hours singing 24 songs with a few MCs. I wondered how enormous their stamina was. They also made an announcement of their spring concert tour. They said that the name of the tour is ‘Best at the moment series “6 Voices”’. Let me repeat this, ‘6 voices’. I was impressed enough by the performance with the 5 members, and I can hardly imagine how much I’ll be moved with the performance by the 6, including Yasumoto.

今夕生放送！：「エビ中 バンドのみんなと大学芸会2020エビ中とニューガムラッド」（フジテレビTWO）に備えて2019のBlu-rayで気持ち準備中 Streaming Live in This Evening!: ‘Ebichu Band no Minna to Daigakugeikai 2020 Ebichu to New Comrade’(FujiTVTWO), I’m getting myself ready for it watching the blu-ray of 2019 version

　夕方4時からの生放送です。生バンドをバックにしたエビ中の大学芸会。18日、26日、27日と予定されていた3日間の公演最終日です。

　They will stream it on 4 p.m. That is a concert by Ebichu featuring a big band. And this is the last performance of the three days, held on 18^th, 26^th, and today, 27^th.  

　会場は、江東区の大型複合施設有明ガーデン内の東京ガーデンシアターとのこと。昨日のツイッターで、会場入りするエビ中ファミリーのつぶやきを見て、俄然気持ちが上がりました。逸る気持ちは、先日届いた2019年の大学芸会Blu-ray視聴でひとまず落ち着かせるしかありません。

　The venue is ‘Tokyo Garden Theater’, which is located in a shopping complex in Koto ward. I saw so many tweets last evening which are tweeted by fans of Ebichu who were going to enter the venue, and they made me get the fidgets. I couldn’t help watching the Blu-ray of the Daigakegeikai in 2019 to slow myself down.

　2019年の大学芸会については、6月にリリースされたCDを聴き込んでいました。勝手にわかってるつもりになっていたのが、映像を観て打ちのめされました。CDでは伝わらない、幕間のやりとりや小芝居に笑顔になります。1曲1曲にあふれるこのグループの魅力がダイレクトに伝わってきます。何よりすごいのはやっぱり生バンドの迫力です。CDとは違う音源ではと思う程です。

　As for the 2019 version, I’ve already listened to the CD version, which was released in June, intently. Although I had a feeling that I’ve learned enough about what the concert was like, I was actually overwhelmed by the video. Some conversations or playacting between the performances, which I couldn’t tell from the CD, made me smile. Each song conveys their attractiveness directly even more. What impressed me most was the great performance by the band. I couldn’t even believe that they are the same concert.

　落ち着くどころか、ますます気持ちが逸ってしまいました。今年のバンドは女性ばかりとのこと。夕方4時が待ち遠しいです。

　Far from slowing myself down. watching the video all the more made me fidgeted. I heard that all the members of the band are women this year. I can’t wait for 4 p.m. this evening.

笑って泣けるクリスマスムービー：「エルフ 〜サンタの国からやってきた〜」（2003）の感想② A Christmas Movie that makes me not only laugh but also cry: My impressions of the Christmas movie called ‘Elf’ (2003) ②

　前回の続きです。

　I’ll go on with my impressions of this movie.

Elf-Funniest Moments

　思いっきり笑えるこの映画ですが、ピュアな少年の心をもったバディが故のこの可笑しみは全て、哀しみの裏返しでもあります。父親の愛を求めてやってきた孤児を待ち受けていたのは、望んでいたような人のぬくもりではありません。それは、ただあくせくと働き、自分のことで精いっぱいで、他者の悲しみなど顧みもしない人間の世界です。この映画の真の面白さは、そんな世界にバディが来たことで起きる素晴らしい奇跡です。それは私たちがすっかり忘れてしまっている大切なものを、再び思い出すということに他なりません。

　Although this movie made me laugh heartily, all the hilarity, which is caused by Buddy’s innocence exactly like a boy, and the sorrow in his heart are the two opposite sides of the same coin. What was waiting for the orphan who came to seek the fatherly love was not the warm heart that he had been looking for. It was the world where people just work hectically and can not afford to consider other’s sorrow. The best part of this movie is the miracle which is caused by Buddy coming to this world. The miracle is nothing but that we remember something precious, which we usually forget and don’t care at all about.

　その点において、この映画の主題は、ディケンズのクリスマス・キャロルと同じです。ウォルターの変容は、スクルージの改心と重なります。観終わったときの感動は、クリスマス・キャロルの読後感そのものです。恥ずかしいくらい泣きました。

　On that point, the theme of this movie is the same as that of ‘A Christmas Carol’, a novella by Charles Dickens. The transfiguration of Walter is similar to that of Scrooge. The emotion aroused by this movie is exactly the same as the one by the novella. I ended up embarrassingly crying. 

　それにしても、バディを演じたウィル・フェレルのコメディアンとしての力量は、素晴らしいの一言に尽きます。もう、目つきだけで笑えます。げっぷ一つで大笑いです。

　By the way, the comedic skill of Will Ferrell, who played Buddy, is simply fantastic. The mere look in his eyes makes me laugh. I burst into laughter only by his belch.

　何度でも観たい、クリスマス映画です。

　This is one of the Christmas films that I can’t get enough of.
