長崎の旨い町中華：「黄林閣」の炒飯 Good Local Chinese Restaurants in Nagasaki: “Orinkaku” which serves tasty fried rice

　炒飯が大好きです。好きすぎて自分でもよく作りますが、もちろん美味しいお店の味には近づけません。シンプルだからこそ、美味しく仕上げるのが難しいように思います。自分にとって、炒飯を食べたくなるお店は、ちゃんぽんのスープが美味しいお店です。黄林閣というこのお店もその一つです。

　I’m crazy about fried rice. I love it so much that I often cook it myself but, of course, I can’t cook it as well as good restaurants can. Fried rice is so simple that it is difficult to make it tasty. In my opinion, the restaurants which serve good fried rice are the ones that can also serve good champon with tasty soup. The restaurant called Orinkaku is surely one of them.

　この炒飯の特長を言えと言われたら困ります。具材も味付けもシンプルです。クセの無さが、美味しさにつながっている典型的な例かもしれません。パラパラ系でもしっとり系でもない、フワッとした仕上がりです。鶏ガラ出汁（たぶん）の香りが食欲を掻き立てます。塩加減が絶妙です。美味いです。あっさりしてるのにしっかりと旨味があって、つい掻き込んでしまいます。最後の一口まで飽きさせません。

　I feel it difficult to find the words to explain the good points of their fried rice. The ingredients and the seasoning seem quite simple. That could be a typical case in which an indistinctiveness leads to tastiness. The texture is neither dry nor moist, but light. The flavor of chicken stock (just my rough guess) stimulates my appetite. The amount of salt is just right. It’s so tasty. It is seasoned lightly but so tasty that I shovel it into my mouth in spite of myself. I’m never tired of it to the last morsel.

　黄林閣は、県営野球場ビッグNスタジアムと県立総合体育館（アリーナかぶとがに）の間にあるお店です。観光客が来るような場所ではありませんが、炒飯が好きな方にはぜひ試してみてほしいお店です。

  Orinkaku is located on the street between Nagasaki Big N Stadium and Nagasaki Prefectural General Gymnasium (Arena Kabutogani). It is not a restaurant that tourists visit but I want people who love fried rice to give it a try.

　まず、漫画としての新しさを感じました。写実的な絵柄、大胆なコマ割りなどそれまでになかった要素がいっぱいでした。でも、その革新性は、漫画としての手法にとどまらず、この物語の世界観そのものに表れているように思います。

　In the first place, there was something new to me about this work as manga. There were some elements, which I’d never known, like the realistic illustrating, the bold way in panel layout, and so on. However, the innovativeness of this work is not confined to the method of illustration. You can also see it in the world created in this story.

　AKIRAの連載が始まったのは1982年, 映画「ブレードランナー」が公開された年です。どちらの作品にも共通するのは、遠い未来ではなく、近未来を描いていることです。1982年といえば、まだパソコンなど存在しない時代です。カセットテープを記憶媒体として使用したマイコンというものはありました。単純なシューティングゲームをするのにも、起動に数十分を要するような代物だったように思います。ファミコン発売はこの翌年になります。でも、何かが始まりそうな予感に満ちた時期でした。そんな時代に、このAKIRAが描き出す近未来の世界は、当時の少年らにとって、絶妙なリアリティがありました。

　The serial publication of AKIRA started in 1982, the year when the movie called ‘Blade Runner’ was released. What they have in common with each other is that both works depicts the worlds in the near future, not in the distant future. In 1982, there wasn’t personal computer. I remember some people used what is called “microcomputer” which has a cassette tape deck as a storage medium.  However, it was so inconvenient that it took almost thirty minutes to start to play a simple shooting game. Family Computer went on sale in the next year. Everyone had a feeling that a new era was about to begin at that time. That's because I somehow felt a reality about this story which described the near future. 

　未知のテクノロジーを感じる乗り物や軍事技術とは裏腹に、登場人物たちの日常を見る限り、特にテクノロジーの恩恵があるようには見えません。現実の2020年の生活の方が、スマートフォンや、インターネットといった情報テクノロジーによってとてつもない便利さを享受しています。AKIRA以前は、未来を描いた話というと、ともすれば夢のようなテクノロジーで便利に暮らす人々の姿が描かれがちだったように思います。そうではないからこそ、AKIRAは新鮮で、リアリティを感じられたのかもしれません。

　Although what you can see here are vehicles and military technology that you haven’t known, the daily lives of the characters seem not the ones that of making use of technologies. I have a feeling that the lives of us, who actually live in 2020 now, are tremendously convenient due to the information technology such as smartphone, internet and so on. I also have an impression that, before AKIRA, the conventional stories, which is set in the future, tended to depict people enjoying dreamlike technologies. AKIRA was different from those old stories, so it made us feel something new and reality at that time.   

　30数年ぶりに読んだAKIRAに感じたのは懐かしさではありません。純粋に物語としての面白さでした。1984年に、友達の家で読んだときと同じ感動を味わえて喜んでいます。

　It was not nostalgia that I felt when I reread AKIRA for the first time in over 30 years. What I felt was the joy of reading an interesting story. I’m happy now because I could have the same emotion as I had when I read this manga at my friend’s place in 1984.

　前回述べた設定だけで、この物語の面白さはもう約束されたも同然です。しかし、さらに登場人物の性格付けが面白さに拍車をかけてきます。主な登場人物について列挙します。

　This story looks already promising with just the settings I mentioned last time. On top of that, the characterization makes this story interesting even more. The main characters are as follows. 

　金田……この物語の主人公。社会適合性に欠ける問題児を集めた「職業訓練校」の生徒。盗品の改造バイクを駆り、仲間とつるんで暴走行為を繰り返す。薬物を常用し、春木屋という居酒屋をたまり場とする不良少年のリーダーである。権威を嫌い、大人には反抗的だが、仲間を大切にし、生来の屈託のなさと明るさで人望は厚い。特殊な能力はないが、抜群の運動神経と度胸、そして野性的な勘の鋭さで、数々の窮地を切り抜けていく。

  Kaneda……Kaneda is the main protagonist of this story. He is a student of ‘Vocational Training Center’ where only delinquents go to. He rides illegally customized motorbike which he has stolen and careers around repeatedly with his usual crowd. He uses drugs regularly and is the leader of a group of delinquents who hang out a pub called Harukiya. He hates authority so he always takes a rebellious attitude towards adults. He values friendship and is carefree and cheerful by nature so he is very popular with his friends. He doesn’t have any supernatural power but he tides over difficulties with his great athletic ability, guts, and keen intuition.     

　鉄雄……金田の幼馴染であり、暴走チームの仲間でもある。幼い頃は気弱でいじめられがちであり、助けてくれる金田を慕いつつも、劣等感から屈折した感情を抱いている。交通事故をきっかけに、特殊な能力に覚醒し、やがて制御が不能なまでの力を発揮してしまう。

　Tetsuo……Tetsuo is a Kaneda’s childhood friend and also a member of Kaneda’s motorcycle gang. He was so timid in his boyhood that he tended to be bullied. Kaneda used to help him so Tetsuo like him but also has inferiority complex and warped feelings against Kaneda. The traffic accident awakened his supernatural ability and he soon shows his uncontrollable power.

　ケイ……反政府組織の一員。仲間との連絡のために訪れた居酒屋「春木屋」で、ナンパしてきた金田を撥ねつける。その後、探していたタカシ（26号）を発見するも、軍と衝突し、後追いしてきた金田を連れて逃走する。特殊能力者たちの触媒としての能力を有することがのちに発覚し、怪物と化した鉄雄を制御する作戦の中で重要な役割を果たすことになる。

  Kei……Kei is one of antigovernment rebels. She visits a tavern called Harukiya to meet another rebel, and she rejects Kaneda who tried to pick her up. After that, she finds Takashi (No.26), who she has been looking for, but collided with the army and ends up running away with Kaneda who has followed her. She finds herself possessing supernatural ability to channel the powers of other psychics afterwards, then she plays an important role in the strategy to control Tetsuo who becomes a monster.

　このほかにも、軍の秘密研究施設の責任者である敷島大佐、特殊能力者の一人で宗教団体の主宰者であるミヤコ、鉄雄の侍女でのちに彼の心の支えとなるカオリなど、数々のキャラクターが物語に色を添えています。これら登場人物一人一人にまつわるプロットが絡み合い、下手すれば破綻しかねないほど煩雑なストーリーが、最終的に腑に落ちる形で収束するのが見事です。

　In addition to these characters, there a lot of attractive supporting characters such as the colonel Shikishima who is the head of the secret research facility, Miyako who is a psychic and the leader of a religion group, Kaori who is a waiting made for Tetsuo but later becomes his emotional support, and so on. These characters have there own episodes and the plots are woven so complicatedly that the story could lead to failure. However, it has the convincing ending so I was really impressed.

　物語の舞台は2019年、翌年の2020年にオリンピックの開催を控えたネオ東京です。今、2020年を生きている自分たちにとって、これほどワクワクできる設定はあるでしょうか。

　The story is set in 2019 in Neo Tokyo, where the Olympic Games are going to take place in 2020. This is the most exciting settings for us who are living in 2020 right now.

　時代背景やその他の設定を列挙してみます。

  Let me enumerate the background of this story and other settings.

　・旧東京は1982年12月6日に新型爆弾で壊滅

　　The old Tokyo was devastated by the new type of bomb on the 6^th in December in 1982.

　・新型爆弾は核爆弾ではなく、詳細はいまだに不明

　    The new type of bomb was not a nuclear bomb and the details on it are still unknown.

　・同日に第三次世界大戦が勃発、各国はその後の復興途上にある

 　    World War Ⅲ occurred on the same day, and the devastated countries are still in the process of reconstruction.

　・ネオ東京は東京湾内の埋め立て地に建設されている

    　 Neo Tokyo city has been built on reclaimed land in Tokyo bay.

　・民主主義体制は維持されているが、反政府勢力が多数存在している

  　  The democratic system is still maintained there, but there are a lot of rebels.

　・自衛隊ではなく、軍隊が存在している

　　The army was established instead of the Self-Defense Forces.

　・既存の警察とは別に、軍の下部組織として特務警察が創設されている

　  Apart from the conventional polis force, the military police are established

　・オリンピック会場建設予定地であるクレーターの地下に軍の秘密基地がある

   　 There is a secret base under the crater which is the proposed Olympic Stadium site.

　・基地内には極秘の研究施設があり、そこでは、実験のために複数の人間が収容されている。

　    There is a top secret research facility in the base and some people are accommodated in it for some experiments.

　軍が行っている研究というのは超能力の開発とその制御です。収容されている被験者たちは、体格は子どもながら、その容姿はみな老人のようです。真夜中のハイウェイで鉄雄のバイクの前に現れたのは、そのうちの一人であるタカシ（26号）でした。大けがをした鉄雄が収容されたのは、この研究施設です。鉄雄にも、特殊能力者特有の脳波があることが発見され、施設の中で鉄雄は41号と呼ばれることになります。

  The research which is carried out by the army is to develop and control supernatural power. Each examinee accommodated there has a child-like physique but looks like an old person. The boy-like figure who appeared in front of Tetsuo’s motorbike was one of them called Takashi (26). Tetsuo, who got severely injured, is taken to this research facility. The researchers find that Tetsuo also has a particular brain wave which only those who have supernatural power show and they begin to call Tetsuo 41 in the facility.

　アキラも被験者の一人（28号）ですが、その存在は完全に伏せられていて、地下の冷凍施設で眠らされています。やがて、41号（鉄雄）の暴走がアキラを目覚めさせることになり、その恐ろしい力が解き放たれてしまうのでした。

　AKIRA is also one of the examinees but his existence has been hidden perfectly. They have made him sleep in a huge freezer under the ground for a long time. 41 (Tetsuo) becomes out of control and ends up awakening AKIRA, so his terrible power is set free now.

　1984年の秋、友達の家で第一巻を手に取った瞬間が忘れられません。漫画の単行本として見たことのないその大きさと、小口にまで着色された凝った装丁に心を奪われました。そして、ページを開いて出会ったのは、見掛け倒しではない、本当に魅力的な世界でした。

　I can’t forget the moment when I took the first volume in my hand at my friend’s place in the autumn of 1984. I’d never seen such a big comic before and was impressed by the elaborate binding when I see the edges of the pages are colored. Then I opened it and found the story really fascinating even more than the beautiful binding. 

AKIRA(1) (KCデラックス)

 　第一ページに次の言葉が記されて始まるこの物語は、出だしから映画仕立てです。

　「1982年12月6日午後2時17分関東地区に新型爆弾が使用された……」

　次の見開き2ページで、新型爆弾の炸裂を背景に「アキラ」というタイトルが大きく書かれます。続く2ページで第3次大戦の勃発とその後の復興が示され、次の見開き2ページで、東京湾に浮かぶネオ東京が舞台であることが、以下の英文とともに紹介されます。

　‘NEO TOKYO CITY IN 38 YEARS AFTER WORLD WAR Ⅲ (A.D. 2019)’

　Reading the words on the first page makes me feel as if I were watching a movie, and what is written there is as follows.

  ‘At 2 p.m. on the 6^th of December in 1982, a new type of bomb was used in the Kanto region’

　In the following facing pages, the title of this book “AKIRA” is written in close-up. In the next facing pages, the beginning of World War Ⅲ and the revival from the devastation of the war are shown, then in the following pages, what is written there in English is as follows.

　‘NEO TOKYO CITY IN 38 YEARS AFTER WORLD WAR Ⅲ (A.D. 2019)’

　物語の始まりは夜のハイウェイです。バイクに乗った若者の一団が、旧市街へと、遺棄された高速道路を疾走する姿が描かれます。リーダーの金田を先頭に、彼らがたどり着いた先は、巨大なクレーターが残る爆心地でした。すぐに引き返そうとする彼らでしたが、先頭に飛び出した鉄雄のヘッドライトの光の中に、一人の少年らしき姿が現れます。それを避けようとして鉄雄は転倒し、大けがを負ってしまうのですが……。

　The story starts with a scene on a highway at night. What is described there is a group of young guys on their motorcycles careering along the deserted highway to the old part of the city. Being led by Kaneda, they got to the epicenter of the bomb blast, and what they see there is an enormous crater. It is when they start to go back that a boy-like figure appears in the glare of the headlight of Tetsuo’s motorbike which is leading the group at that time. Tetsuo falls trying to avoid running over him and ends up suffering severe injuries.

　その後、金田が思いがけない事態に見舞われていくさまが、テンポよく描かれていきます。金田は、行きつけの居酒屋で、謎めいた少女ケイと出会います。そして、それをきっかけに軍に追われるはめになるのでした。この間の描写は、まさに手に汗握るものがあります。

　After that, the plot in which Kaneda gets involved in unpredictable situations develops rapidly. Kaneda meets a mysterious girl called Kei at his regular pub. This encounter leads him to be chased by the army. The description of all these things are really thrilling.

　三十数年ぶりに、どうしても読みたくなって、全巻買ってしまいました。時を経ても、装丁の秀逸なデザインに、古さは感じません。あっという間に読んでしまいました。この物語の魅力について、しばらく考えてみたいと思います。

　I just wanted to read this series of comics for the first time in over 30 years, so I bought all the volumes at one time. The splendid design of the binding never fades even after all these years. I read it at a stretch. I’d like to consider the attractiveness of this story for a while.   

家飲みにぴったり？：アップル・バーボン（ベレンツェン） Something that is just right for drinking at home: Apple bourbon (Berentzen)

　バーボンが好きです。すぐに酔っ払うくせに、香りを楽しみたくて、ストレートで飲みたがります。この数か月、外で飲めないのもあって、手ごろな値段のいろんなバーボンを買って楽しんでいました。

　I like bourbon whiskey. Although I soon get drunk, I tend to drink it neat wanting to enjoy the flavor. I couldn’t go out for drinking for the last few months so I’ve bought several kinds of bourbons, which are not so expensive, and enjoyed them.

　先日、近くのスーパーのバーボンの棚で、ジムビーム・アップルを見かけて試してみました。いつも通りストレートで飲んでみると、甘すぎて少し気分が悪くなりました。もったいないのでハイボールにすると、めちゃくちゃ美味しくて喜びました。リキュール入りのバーボンもなかなか面白いと思って、他にないかと検索したところ、ぜひ試してみたいものを見つけました。

　I saw Jim Beam Apple among bourbons on the shelf at a nearby supermarket the other day and decided to give it a try. I drank it neat at first as usual and ended up feeling bad because it was too sweet. I didn’t want to throw it away so tried it again mixing it with soda and felt so good because it was really tasty. I became interested in bourbon with liqueurs so I searched for them on the internet and found one that made me feel like giving it a try.

　ドイツのベレンツェンというリキュールメーカーが生産しているアップル・バーボンです。まずは、ストレートで試してみました。甘いけれども、すっきりした味わいです。そのままで十分楽しめます。アルコール度数も低めで28％となっています。ハイボールにするのがもったいないほどの美味しさです。

　What I found was Apple Bourbon produced by Berentzen in Germany. I tried it neat. It is sweet for sure but not too much and quite refreshing. You can enjoy it as it is. It is not so strong and has 28 % alcohol by volume. It is so tasty that I prefer to have it neat rather than with soda.

　バーボンとリキュールの組み合わせ、他にも試してみたいと思っています。

　Now I want to drink various types of bourbon with liqueurs.

007シリーズ原作の魅力：第一作「カジノ・ロワイヤル」（初版1953年） The attractiveness of the original series of 007 books: the first volume, ‘Casino Royale’（published in 1953）

007/カジノ・ロワイヤル (創元推理文庫)

　時代遅れです。スノビズムにセクシズム、残念なことにレイシズムにまであふれています。批判すべき点が多くあるのは分かっています。それでも間違いなく、本当に面白い読み物です。レイモンド・チャンドラーも絶賛した作品です。

　Sure enough, it is out of date. It is also full of snobbism, sexism, and unfortunately even racism. I know there are many points which deserve criticism. Even so, this book is really enjoyable for sure. it was highly praised even by Raymond Chandler.

　本作におけるジェームズ・ボンドの任務は、ソ連の手先でフランスの共産党系機関の幹部であるル・シッフルを失脚させることです。ル・シッフルは、自身が経営する売春宿の赤字に苦しみ、その補填のために機関の資金を使い込んだのでした。しかも、その穴をとばくで埋めようとしていることをつかんだイギリスの情報部は、それを敵陣営に打撃を与えるチャンスととらえます。ボンドは、賭博に勝つことで、ル・シッフルの残りの資金を全て奪うために、フランスに送り込まれたのでした。情報部は、ボンドの助手としてもう一人派遣します。ヴェスパー・リンドという名の女性工作員です。初めは、ヴェスパーのことを足手まといとしか感じないボンドでしたが……。

　In this story, James Bond is assigned to bring about the downfall of Le Chiffre, a tool of the Soviet Union and also the leader of an apparatus of the French Communist Party. Le Chiffre has suffered the serious deficit in his own brothel and ends up embezzling the union funds. Besides he is trying to make up it by gambling and the British secret service gets this information taking it as an opportunity to deal a blow at the enemy. Bond is sent France to take Le Chiffre’s money by defeating him in gamble. The secret service also sent another agent as an assistant for Bond. The agent is a woman named Vesper Lynd. At first, Bond just sees her as a burden but…….    

　掛け金が3200万フラン（現在の日本円で６億円）にも達する、ボンドとル・シッフルの勝負は、手に汗握るものがあります。ゲームはバカラです。９を最強の数字とするこのカードゲームは、シンプルなだけに、勝負展開が早くてスリルを感じます。フレミングのストーリーテリングの巧さが、ここで見事に発揮されます。ボンドが勝つに決まっていますが、そうすんなりとはいかせません。勝負の行方がどうなるか、ちゃんとドキドキさせられます。勝負に決着がついたと思ったら、今度はヴェスパーが誘拐されて、真夜中のカーチェイスへと展開していきます。

  The game between Bond and Le Chiffre is so thrilling and the stakes reach 32 million francs (about 600 million yen in the present value). The game is baccarat. The strongest number is nine in this game, which is so simple and decided so soon that I feel thrilled. Ian Fleming’s skillful storytelling is outstanding there. Bond’s winning is obvious but there are twists and turns before that. I almost felt that the outcome of the game was excitingly unpredictable. After their game, Vesper ends up being kidnapped and it leads to a car chase in the middle of the night.

　フレミングの描写の特徴は、登場人物の様子について、服の着こなしから食べ物の好み、何気ない仕草に至るまで読者が脳内で視覚的に再現できるような描き方をしてくれることです。例えば、この作品でボンドが乗っている車についての描写を拾い集めると、1933年に新品同然で買ったというベントレーでコンバーチブルのクーペ、色はグレー、フォグランプがあり、25馬力、2インチの排気管をもち、エムハースト・ヴィリヤースのスーパーチャージャー付きということまでわかります。

　The characteristics of Fleming’s style is to depict the details of the character’s appearance or traits like how to dress, likes and dislikes in food, and casual behaviors, so that the readers can imagine them in their mind clearly. For example, there are many descriptions about Bond’s car and what I get about the car from them is that it is a second hand Bentley Bond bought it as good as new in 1933, painted in grey, a convertible coupe featuring fog lamp, 25 hp engine, an exhaust pipe two inches in diameter, and the Amherst Villiers supercharger.

　67年も前の作品ですから、国際情勢も生活様式も、人々の価値観さえ今とはかけ離れています。それでも、時代を超えて楽しめる、普遍的な面白さがここにはあります。

　It was written 67 years ago, so everything has changed in many way like the international situation, people’s life style, and even the sense of values. Even so, you would find it something of a all-time favorite with eternally fascinating aspects.
