Good cocktails in my favorite bar “Hot Tiffin”

If you want to warm your chilled body you can use this cocktail, too.

In France Ya, you find a small white board on which the cocktails of the season are written. Now in winter, those cocktails are something hot like hot whisky, hot rum and so on. The cocktail I ordered the other day was the one at the bottom of the list and it was the first time for me to have it.That was “hot tiffin”, based on tea liqueur.

This cocktail is made of the tea liqueur called “Tiffin” which is from Germany and milk, plus sprinkled with nutmeg powder and flavored with cinnamon stick. It tastes like milk tea mixed with some spirit, and it can really warm your body. “They usually have this iced” said the bartender.

f:id:turkeyrice:20190221224635g:plain

The bartender always wrap the cinnamon stick left in the glass so you can take it home. At this time of year, my room is fragrant with cinnamon as it is a mysterious kind of novelty shop.

Songs I can’t get enough of “Speak like a child” by The Style Council

I’m carried away just when I hear the introduction. I still feel exhilarated when I happen to hear the song “Speak like a child” by The Style Council which is a group led by Paul Weller in the U.K. I’m sure there are many songs that sounds catchy and cool, but this song is something that makes me feel it is by far the best.

The Style Council - Speak Like A Child

Nowadays it is meaningless to group musicians by genre, and it seems like Paul Weller was the first musician who created this current. What Paul Weller really wanted to do was to create sounds which he really wanted to create not caring about genre, and he even broke up The Jam, his former band, which was still at the height of their fame in order to realize his ideals.  The Style Council’s songs might have been some kinds of treachery for the ardent fans of The Jam. Their songs sound like AOR, jazz, and sometimes neo acoustic. Actually, I loved the songs of The Jam, but I feel that the songs of The Style Council sound still new even now.

The Style Council - You're The Best Thing

The Style Council - My Ever Changing Moods

The Style Council - Headstart For Happiness

Paul Weller, who doesn’t waver in changing his style, made a song called “Mother Ethiopia” which sounds like ethnic recently. He was one of the leaders of the mod revival so he was extremely cool. I remember a photograph of him appears on the front cover of the magazine called Rockin’on around the early 90’s and he let his blond nose hair stick out of his nostril, but I somehow felt it was rather cool.

Something unique in Nagasaki rice balls of “KANIYA"

What do you think of having rice balls after drinking? I guess it sounds a bit weird for you to do so, but it’s rather common in Nagasaki. However, the place we have them is limited. The restaurant is called “Kaniya” which specializes in rice balls.

f:id:turkeyrice:20190217175502g:plain

There is an amusement area called Doza in Nagasaki. Doza is surrounded by such districts as Shianbashi, Maruyama, and Shinchi (Chinatown) , and you can enjoy not only drinking but eating many special foods  from Nagasaki at many restaurants or taverns. “Kaniya” which started in 1965 has been there in Doza for over 50 years. You have twenty choices or more of rice balls there. The most popular one is the rice ball with salty mackerel. You can enjoy rather rare ingredients such as kyarabuki which is a simmered and soy-sauced Japanese butterbur, hatogarashi which is simmered and soy-sauced leaves of pepper and so on. You are probably wondering whether there is a difference between Kaniya’s rice balls and others’, but actually there is because Kaniya’s rice balls somehow have special tastes that other restaurants don't have. The difference perhaps comes from the way of boiling rice or the degree of pressing and shaping the rice balls or the way of wrapping the nori (a kind of seaweed), I guess.

Their rice balls somehow go well with red miso soup. You can also enjoy some other meals like oden, skewered meat, grilled cod roe and so on, so you can have them with rice balls properly as dinner. You can order a takeout there, too, so I hope you to visit Kaniya when you come to Nagasaki.

Works that never fade “Shonen Marketer Goro” by Shiriagari Kotobuki

This is the last volume of the salaryman trilogy. The main character is an elementary school boy called Goro who is a genius in marketing, and he earned his MBA degree from M.I.T at the young age of 10.

f:id:turkeyrice:20190214220741g:plain

Many clients visit Goro’s office every day to consult him about their product development. Goro always takes them aback because he comes up with epoch-making ideas as soon as he listens to them. The items he offers them are, for example, a golf club which has all kinds of head and even a can opener on a shaft, an electric shaver called “Denki Higenori” which is a dreamy one for salarymen who grudge the time, and a racing type rice-planting machine which might be able to solve Japanese agricultural problems. These products are something utterly absurd beyond the bounds of common sense so I can’t stop giggling while reading this comic.

f:id:turkeyrice:20190214220827g:plain

f:id:turkeyrice:20190214220839g:plain

In the second half of this volume, you can see various types of short pieces which has a wide range of contents from the story about salarymen to historical ones. They are superb as gag comics so I can’t stop laughing. The one especially I like is a piece called “Shanai Bungo” which is a story about a guy who put together a proposal, which should be concise, in 30 volumes of books to read out loud in a meeting. Another piece I like very much is called “Oie Danzetsu Waratte Yurushite”, depicting a gag battle of attack and defence between a Shogun, who tries to extinguish a lord’s family line, and the lord. Shiriagari’s styles are varied and some of them look like other cartoonist's style such as Kontaro who publidhed “Ichi Ni no Ahho”, Yokoyama Mitsuteru who published “Tetsujin 28 Go”, and Saito Takao who created “Golgo 13”. I’m overwhelmed by his perfectly playful and free style. This comic was published in 1996, but I sometimes enjoy it, even now.

Book reviews “IQ” by Joe Ide

Here comes a new detective hero. I read a mystery titled “IQ” which was written by Joe Ide, who is a Japanese American author. IQ is a nickname of the protagonist named Isaiah Quintabe.

IQ, an African American, who lives in Los Angeles is in his twenties. He is a private detective without any qualification. He cares little about reward so most of the cases brought to him are rather trivial ones, but some of them are quite serious like blackmail, kidnapping and so on. One day, his former roommate Dodson approaches IQ with a job. It has something to do with a rap mogul, and a huge reward is promised.

Two plots are woven in this story, the one is about what is happening in 2013 and the other is about what happened in 2005, and these two are depicted alternately. It is revealed through things in 2005 that the reason why IQ became a detective or the relationship IQ had with Dodson and all these things eventually lead to a case which happens in 2013. This is surely a mystery, but I’m sure you would be disappointed if you expect this book to be a classic whodunit story. It is not that you can see an unexpected trick or motive in this book, it rather lays emphasis on IQ’s inner conflict and emotional growth

I read the original version this time because I thought I could improve my reading skills by doing that. This book was published in 2016 and I found many new words which were not given in my electronic dictionary so it was challenging for me to read this book and, at the same time, I realized the usefulness of smartphones. The Japanese version of this book was published in Hayakawa Mystery Bunko in June last year. IQ was serialized and the third volume was just published in America at the end of last year.

好きだったCMソング 「Dreamland」by Bennie K for Coca-Cola : My favorite CM songs

There are many musicians who became my favorite through TV commercials. So is Little Glee Monster who I mentioned last time, but the one who comes into my mind first is Bennie K, they also sang a commercial song for Coca-Cola before. The commercial song called “Dreamland” which was aired in 2005 was specially written for the commercial so it didn’t have even the title at first. They released it on CD due to an inundation of inquiries.

BENNIE K DREAMLAND

This song made me interested in Benny K and I ended up getting into them for a while. The songs I particularly I loved were “Sunrise”, “Okay” and “Oasis”. YUKI and CICO, the members, met each other by chance during their homestays in Los Angeles. They debuted in 2001, since then they had released 14 singles in total by the time they ended their activities as Bennie K in 2009.

[PV] BENNIE K - Oasis [HQ]

I met her in a club down in North Soho, where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola C-O-L-A cola”という歌詞をみる限り,きっと勘違いです。

As for the Coca-Cola songs, there are other ones which remind me of good old days such as “Naminori Johnny” and “Shiroi Koibito Tachi” both by Kuwata Keisuke, “Natsuiro no Nancy” by Hayami Yu, and “THIS IS A SONG FOR COCA-COLA” by Yazawa Eikichi. In this connection I may add that you can hear “Cola” in the lyrics of a song called “Lola” sung by Kinks who is one of my favorite British rock bands, so I guessed it might have been a Coca-Cola song before, but now that I just checked the lyrics again and saw it said “I met her in a club down in North Soho, where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola C-O-L-A cola”, I’m sure it wasn’t.

There must be some musicians who you are interested in but having no chance to listen to properly. In my case, it was Little Glee Monster.

I happened to see them appear on a TV program called Music Fair a while ago. My eyes were riveted on the TV screen due to their song which sounds like the one from Motown label in the 60’s and their skills as singers. The song which they sang then was “Koi wo Aserazu”. I was unable to contain myself checking their songs on YouTube and I finally downloaded their new album from Amazon.

The album titled “FLAVA” is dazzlingly full of freshness. I thought it is perhaps because of the image of the first song titled “Sekai wa Anata ni Waraikakete Iru” which is the CM song for Coca-Cola. Actually, you may feel the sparkling sunshine and a freshly blowing breeze through the whole album. I feel like going out to enjoy the sunshine outside, even though I am definitely indoor type.

I think this album is a bargain because it contains all of 17 songs including a Motown medley and some live music.
